PS, regarding the loudness wars. Since I am a, uh hmm, older listener I have to say the problem with the loudness thing is ear fatigue. I can't listen to more than 4 or 5 songs on many new records before I have to turn it off. I'm not the only one who has noticed this and some say it has contributed to the decline of record sales.
I couldn't help but wonder with all the compression being used if you aren't taking away the Mastering Engineers duty and essentially giving them less to work with. I use parallel compression when needed not as a rule of thumb. Just curious. Great show as always.
Three and a half mintues escape from the horrors of this world!!!, serious how many people write and produce a song with that in mind??? I would like to hear those songs....:-)
funny Dave, I'm a chauffeur(when I'm not behind a mac) and I drive brats around, and they all love the loud hip hop station. As an aspiring producer, sometimes the songs on these stations actually catch my ear and I find myself jamming out like a high school kid. This song caught me just like it did you, I couldn't believe how slick the mix was. Wiz was the same way.
All the talk about Frank Ocean and Odd Future reminds me of just how lucky we are to have you guys doing this show, because you're in the thick of it and you know exactly what's up. Old dudes rehashing the same old Alan Parsons/Dark Side stories are a dime a dozen, but this is the real stuff for 2011. Thanks mucho Dave/Herb and co.
The loudness wars still have a negative effect on the sound quality of many records. I could go on and on listing records that would sound more open and impactful if they weren't pushed so hard, Gardner or not. I don't think it's an issue of it being universally accepted as sounding good, but universally accepted as a necessary practice to compete. Even top engineers make sacrifices for loudness; sculpting into its corner, making decisions based on how to get it louder, but not always better.
Great show Dave! I have learned so much from watching this series. I am also a recording school student, and stoked at how much of the info is very supplemental to what I study and learn more of every day. I feel very lucky to have such a wealth of info at my finger tips while I am honing my craft in preparation of my career. Thanks again guys, and keep it up!
Another great show... very cogent and really (left brained) informative. New to this world, I love the specifics on this show. Dave, you have no idea how universal your 'philosophizing' was when you said people complain in their areas of ignorance. This is fifty-fold in my world (I am a Pastor). I have watched every episode and pointed other 'real' musician/producer/engineer friends from my former band days. Loving the series. Best part is the personal interaction - fun times. ITL rocked!
I have noticed you interview a lot of engineers in the pop industry, I would really love it if you could interview someone from the metal/hardcore industry, such as Jason Suecof! I would love to hear some techniques that the top engineers in this field use!
Dude, Dave... "I always like to use a ratio of π (mathematical pi) whenever I use decimals... "... lol.... This statement is why you are the MAN.... lol.....
Does anyone know the name of the Zaho track he is working on in the ITL?

Just because you get used to something, that doesn't mean it's an improvement.

Dave, can you explain how you do the parallel compression in Pro Tools?
Thanks so much!
