agreed, the scum who win win win with SOPA like to make our modern world look like a corporate empire, plainly it is, corporations paying for the political class, who in turn run the world, big business is bad business, the elite needs an ass whooping from the people, in every nation, america could be the beacon for freedom
@robertwlester In spite of its many problems, it once was a beacon to the people of the world but those things that made it that way are being tossed aside by people claiming to be defending our 'freedoms'. The theory being that if you throw them away no one will be jealous of them.??????????
As one of my favourite C19th commentators, Percy Hewles, said:
"In Politics, ‘right’ and ‘left’ are illusory. There is only power and the extent to which adhering to the status quo or becoming a vanguard for change will afford one power!”
He also said: "The only difference between a travesty and a tradition is repetition." :p
The way I heard it (NPR interview), it was aimed at mainly foreign-based sites that are fraudulently selling copyrighted material. The big media companies are the main force pushing the law, but piracy hurts little guys, too. People do have a right to protect their intellectual property. Google & Reddit, etc. are being disingenuous about their roles abetting the fraud. They don't care about freedom of speech. They just don't want the expense or the bother of policing their own content.
@curlew0609 Who ever is the stated target at this time, it has far reaching consequences when enacted. Also, I see it as only a starting place for this sort of intervention.
@MacNutz2 "starting place" I see it as a strong incentive for the tech companies to stop whining, figure out what they can do about it, and DO it. They can't claim that the fraud is not at least partly their responsibility when they are knowlingly providing ways to commit it. Once that is done, the corporations providing the money to push the bills will stop. This is not an attack on free speech. It is about property rights and financial loss caused by the theft of copyrighted material.
@curlew0609 I believe the Chinese idea is the stopping point for this kind of intrusive legisation. This will go much further than the stated goals of protecting property. I do get your point but it will not stop there.
Well my reps are sponsoring the bill. They think it's the best thing since sliced bread. One loudest is retiring and don't care about votes or donations. But I wrote them twice anyway !
SOPA/PIPA are damn, blatant lies. It is censorship meant to stifle the slow but steady arrival of democracy. Not representative and indirect republicanism that pretends to be democracy today but true, direct democracy which is coming through sites like Avaaz, Wikipedia, Khan Academy, YouTube, Blogger... Real democracy is coming through the internet and the lying, parasitical "representatives" don't like it. At all. But we wont let them stop it.
@akylae101 I'm a Canadian now. But this will effect everyone and greatly encourage the politicos of other countries. Similar legislation was very recently defeated in Canada but it will return under a different guise.
EU has ACTA and by the look of it, it's same thing in a different package. New Zeland had a protest against their censorship law. The original version was killed but the re-worded one was rushed and is now in place also. It doesn't matter where we live, this thing is a global knee-jerk by the ruling caste which senses their grip is slipping. But we must soldier on.
@oldcomic1 indeed, they won't give up on this. A similar bill was defeated in Canada and there are members already working on another version of the same thing. Their corporate masters want this done and of course, the politicos themselves want it.
I was one of those who have been nagging you for the return of Thaddeus. I can't help it....I need my Thaddeus fix once in a while. :D I was hoping to hear Thaddeus views on the upcoming presidential election. Which candidate would he support if any and why? I would also like to know his thoughts of the recent surge of over the top religious nonsense that has been portrayed here in American sports.
@Gliese581f I appreciate the feed back from people. I thought of him as just a silly bit of time wastage. A friend who makes commercial video productions thinks Thaddeus whould have his own channel. Opinions vary.:) But he is fun to play with. A few folks like him, so he gets a reprieve.
@Gliese581f I'm not certain but I suspect he won't like Tebow or any of the god candidates. He's fussy about such things. Of course, I'm not sure but I don't think Thaddeus likes anyone, not even Thaddeus.
@gettingolder2 Sadly, Thaddeus seems constipated in every sense of the word but insists that the rest of us have loose bowels where our brains ought to be.
@goxster In deed my brother. So many of our traditions have fallen by the way side. I apologize for the nature of the message but one must speak in a language that those befuddled, by smoking the other 'blends', might understand the seriousness of the issue and not bring themselves to harm.
You are 300% right: politicians do not like to be held accountable for what they do.

@MacNutz2 Fortunately, it sounds like it's already dead in the water.
If the tech companies start working on the problem, themselves, the bill will never come to life, again.
