This song by PP&M combines first act & reprise in the second. First act has the troubodours performing with no context. The second has deeper meaning. Jack the jester and Elsie are the traveling pair. Jack is in love with Elsie and thinks eventually they will pair. Unfortunately for Jack, Elsie is taken (figuratively & literally) from Jack by Colonel Fairfax who is a bit of a jerk.
I don't fully understand Gilbert and his delineation of heroes and villains.
I am a Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiast, otherwise known as a Savoyard. In many ways, I'm a purist. Well, this purist was absolutely entranced by this version. I love it. I wish Peter, Paul, and Mary had made a Gilbert and Sullivan album. Maybe I'm not such a purist. Danny Kaye recorded G&S songs with cleverly altered lyrics, and Hot Mikado toyed with G&S's perhaps best-known operetta. I adored them too.

MostIngenious - PP&M did record it. It was on "Peter, Paul and Mommy", a great children's album that's also great for grown ups! I know this because I had the album as a child when it first came out and loved this song.
Actually, they did record it. I can't remember where, unfortunately, but I actually have it on cd somewhere. Alas, Gilbert and Sullivan usually don't do well on top 40 radio.
This song from PP & M was one of my first musical memories! I grew up listening to them too! Even maybe listened to them when I was still inside my mom!
oh ya, grew up listening to this, still rocking out to them in 2012

This is a great version. If they'd recorded it, it may well have been G&S's only Top 10 hit!
MostIngenious 1 year ago 2
@ MostIngenious ,
LOL. That is funny !
I can hear it now on Top 40 radio....."And Noooow, GILBERT AND SULLIVAN'S GREATEST HIT !!! ".
cschoon1213 1 year ago 4
@MostIngenious If they had recorded it, and it was their only hit, their record company would still release a 20-song CD called "G&S's Greatest Hits"

They did record it. :P It is on their 1969 album "Peter, Paul and Mommy". :)

This would be good to sing for the benefit of the Haitians, since their country is mentioned so many times in the lyrics.

My Mum and I used to sing this. I have loved PP&M since we were all young, and I never heard this...must be the dedication of the Opera House?
Gods, Mary, we're all missing you terribly. Go with the gods. You're loved and you made a difference in the world.
