I've watched guys play this in the arcade -and they never won ! Not even with a curious bug that gave them 100 (one hundred) game lives. at a certain point. As a vicarious arcade player , I soon got tired.

in the snes version, you have the 3 armor ups, knight, green, and gold armor. then you could get the shields if i am not mistaken.

oh, didn't realize they had an arcade version though i have seen the nes version and genesis versions of the game. plus i've beaten maximo:ghosts to glory, the 3-D version of the game which is good i think.

it's kinda like the super mario world version to super mario 64. like 2-d to 3-d leap. super ghosts and goblins to maximo. only deal is that it doesn't have arthur but it has many of the same concepts. i don't know if they still sell it b/c it was on the blue disc like marvel vs. capcom 2 for the ps2, and was a rarity, but it's worth checking out.
