  • Amazing work. Thanks for sharing this.

  • la película original tenía subtítulos en español donde puedo encontrar esa versión ??

  • I have watched this documentary 3 times. It is one of the most amazing journeys that humans have done. These Norwegian guys are legends. Good on them for making such an amazing timeless journey..

  • @bezybez

Most amazing journey? what about getting to the moon, or dony you believe that happened.

  • @jeremy1000100 You are right, not the most, but certainly one of the most journeys. And I do believe in moon landing:)

  • @bezybez the most amazing journey humans have done? What about getting to the moon, or dont you believe that happened

  • I read the book a few years ago and would highly recommend it. I didn't relise this footage existed. What an Amazing adventure. I am inspired!

  • I really don't see the point of this, whatever manner the islands were populated, these ancient people were still from the same race as mongoloids.

  • Is that BK's daughter in the "mormon" spot? I mean, who else would be both a mormon and a longboard champ?

  • thank you, umm, whew, o.. noregin are we? crean we are,, u wanna bat?

  • 49:20 beating he's chest! Now that is priceless :)

  • If you’d eat plankton soup today, a third of it would be plastic.

  • Hats off ......

  • I claim this island for Norway!

  • Thor was a legend

  • Totally epic! Would love to check out the Kon Tiki Museum in Oslo to see the real deal : )

  • How inspirational is this, I read the book `The Kon Tiki Expedition' when I was 9 back in 1968 and later read `The Ra expeditions' and both had quite an effect on me. However this is the first time I have seen this movie, thanks muchly for uploading it.

  • In my childhood in the early 60ies, the Kontiki Journey was the most amazing adventure for us kids. My father had this green book, Kontiki, and I was reading as much I could. The photos were great. In the 60ies we have seen this movie on the Austrian TV. Now we know, Thor Heyerdahl had partly right. The young king of the Inka empire started with his raft to Polynesia in the 15th century - and they came back some months later. The first men, who populated Polynesia came from SE Asia 5000 ya.

  • dude, billy1212ist, go Troll off somewhere else. Or maybe take a break from the computer all together. Go for a walk or do something productive. You just might feel better about yourself, and not be so bitter about the rest of the world.

If can't do that then i'd perhaps recommend you go out and fuck yourself? maybe?

  • @MrSidMan I feel great about me,it's you I don't like little gaylord punk.And I will go fuck myself,your mother ain't so good,...well just look at you.

  • DOES ANYONE know where to find the Ra Expedition movie?

  • If that whale shark happened to attack the raft, all those men could be a dead meat. I am not justifying anything, but we are judging them at today's point of view. Remember, it was shortly after the war and all they had was one primitive radio and ship traffic was quite random them and no helicopters.

  • @Quex01 You can swim with whale sharks; they are completely docile until someone does something stupid like harpooning them. A disrespectful, unkind act and a dangerous risk. All the same I have the utmost respect for what these men achieved and I would have loved to partake. Unfortunately, I was born one year and one day after they hit the reef.

  • @Quex01 ---Get Real.."If the whale shark attacked, they would be dead meat." IS a justification, numb nutz. The "WE" who are judging them,is YOU and the other jerks.Personally,I would have taken a weapon to ward off potential danger.A hungry wounded whale shark etc.Sticks of dynamite, whatever necessary in those waters.

  • Did the ancient Polynesians come from Asia or from South America? Probably both! Polynesians aren't monolithic. The fact that "Tiki" existed in both South American and Polynesian cultures adds some weight to Heyerdahl's hypothesis. But there are shared characteristics with Polynesian and Asian cultures as well. Which adds weight to Nainoa's hypothesis. In any case, whatever the truth, it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the story.

  • Thankyou so much for posting this, one of the best documentaries i've seen.

  • It does seem rather artsy and totally irrelevant at the start of the video to be advertising for an American homegrown religion since it has nothing at all to do with the Kontiki adventure. Great documentary! Oh, by the way, I'm a "New Ager" and also interested in Buddhism and Hinduism, just in case the video makers are interested in other religions too.

  • Thank you so much for posting this!

  • Does anyone know of any other videos concerning the expedition? How about NOVA or any other productions? I would love to find another as I have the 1951 video.. ..thanks for posting this clip..

  • @watcherman65 Theres a norwegian movie beeing shot right now, and its called..well..Kon-Tiki :). It comes out next year

  • Read the book first; then found and watched this video - thoroughly enjoyed both.

  • @gimmeshelter1969

would you prefer reading the booking first or does the arrangement not matter?

  • @laloca787894 Heyerdahl was just one of a kind - a great explorer with a penchant for great writing (IMAO). I recommend the book first because it's one of the greatest adventure stories I ever had the pleasure to read, a true gem of a book. Not a boring sentence or phrase throughout.

  • Great film of voyage and discovery. We only learn by testing hypotheses. But what a brave test! Bravo!

  • emm i think i know why Easter Island has no trees now - it must of been used to rebuild the canoes - if they took the south route.. these guys took the west from peru route..wow..im so amazed. its all coming clearer now..

  • well im from samoa.. and this is so special... im gonna record this now.. and show my family.. wow.. im so amazed. and the video footage.. GOD is great.. evening in our travels as polynesians. he provided us with food and drink.. we are so blessed.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Thor Heyerdahl is such a fascinating person and his writings about possible (some might say 'probable') ancient migration and trade routes is excellent material for serious consideration. Winds and currents ruled sea travel until the use of engines on ships at sea made travel against winds and current possible and that was really VERY recently in the history of mankind.

  • Wow, simply wow! Great documentary of an unbelievable adventure!

Thanks for posting this pearl for us to enjoy for free!

  • T.Heyerdahl wrote in his book, the first Indios at the Westcoast reached Polynesia with their rafts some thousends of years ago. But the natives from South East Asia invented sailing on the open sea. They were the first, who sailed from Indonesia to N-Australia even 40.000 years ago. They used bamboo for their rafts. Many thousends of years later the Indios made their first trips from S-America to Polynesia and brought potatoes and cotton plants to some Polynesian islands.

  • @Ixtulu his book is full of shit you fucken cracker

  • The old peruvian sailors. greats discoverers. This expedition, only to prove. Greetings all every adventurers. Lima - Perú

  • If Indiana Jones was real...... Thor Heyerdahl would kick his ass!!

  • @ilovefrankandbeans

    How is it false?

  • @Vebable Thor Heyerdahl's claims turned out to be false, thus the man is a chump and stupid

  • @ilovefrankandbeans the claims have not been falsified.

This is still the most plausible explanation.

  • Dont listen to "ilovefrankandbeans"

This Is a fake account created purely for these comments

Someone has hired "ilovefrankenbeans" to discredit Thor Heyerdahl.

Lol. I thought they gave that up in the 70,s

  • @Vebable Thor Heyerdahl claimed that the Polynesian islanders sailed aimlessly in the ocean and found islands based off of pure luck. He was dead wrong. The Polynesian Voyaging Society proved that the ancient Polynesians found the islands based off of skill, and having their own intricate navigation system using their constellation knowledge as their compass. Look up the Hokulea and then you'll learn. Maybe the words i used were a bit harsh and i apologize, but your boy Heyerdahl is dead wrong

  • @ilovefrankandbeans

    Heyerdahl is not my boy.

    Consentrate now....

    Heyerdahl put forward many hypothesis'.

He also claimed he had been wrong about many of his early assumptions.

Maybe you need to update your info.

Being wrong and falsifying are two very different things.

  • @Vebable was Heyerdahl right?? THE ANSWER IS NO!! he was dead wrong and failed miserably so face it your boy heyerdahl is a idiotic chump bitch

  • @ilovefrankandbeans You have a very distorted view of reality. Please refrain from commenting on this video.

  • @ilovefrankandbeans

Why do you keep telling lies about Thor Heyerdahls theories.

You obviously haven't read anything for yourself.

Please read them first, and then you can comment in a way others might accept.

I hope to read your views in a serious way.

  • @Vebable BECAUSE HE WAS PROVEN WRONG BY THE POLYNESIAN VOYAGING SOCIETY YOU DUMB ASS HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU!?!! GOD DAMMIT YOUR BOY WAS DEAD WRONG, HE WASNT EVEN CLOSE

  • @ilovefrankandbeans So what!!! He admitted it when/if he was wrong!!! If you really care so much why don't you get in touch with the Kon Tiki Museum and vent your unjustified frustration on them!!!! YOU FUCKING IDIOT.

  • @sHERBert2069 fuck you cracker, you and thor heyer-shit are both a disgrace to all crackers!!!!

  • @ilovefrankandbeans Please you are speaking far too loosely. You clearly don't know a lot about him. You said ''his book is full of shit''. Really, which book? Which part, specifically? I think you are arguing for the sake of it. Don't dishonour a dead man just because you're a dickhead.

  • @sHERBert2069 the book entitled Kon-Tiki:Across the Pacific Raft, you dont know this??? hello why the fuck are you even on this page you dumbass. that's what this whole argument is about and that's the whole reason why i'm on this page in the first place!!!!!!! get the fuck outta here you dumb cracker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ilovefrankandbeans You idiot you can't even get the title of the book right. I happen to have a hard copy of ''The Kon-Expedition By Raft Across The South Seas'', right in front of me. Will you ever just fuck off and kill yourself you fucking waste of space. You don't really care about Heyerdahl so stop fucking insulting him you fucking cunt.

  • @ilovefrankandbeans Well, I was reading this book in the mid 60ies and in the 70ies again. I think, I know what you mean, but take care, you are too young to understand the time in the past. Now we all know, his ideas were partly wrong, not all. Keep cool young gun!

  • @Ixtulu

Do we really know that or is it just consensus in the esteblished archeological community to misinterpret and discredit him....? The Kon-tiki museum does not tell us half of what Thor told us about the origins of polynesian civilisation. Some of it even has changed to not look like Nazi-propaganda.

  • @Vebable My goodness - yes, I agree with you! I just talked to this guy (frankandbeans) I was angry, because he used too much swearwords. Know it is known, the Polynesian people came from Taiwan some thousends of years ago. Around 2-3000 ya the first Indios used a balsa-raft and discoved the island around the Marquesas. Thor H.believed, all Polynesian came from S-America. I hope we have peace now.....by the way, my English is not very good. I didn`t said anything against you and Thor R....ok?..

  • @Ixtulu

    Thank you.

Hmm. I Remember Thor saying the south americans sailing west for the first time met some locals on the islands and that they exchanged knowledge of navigation- But he was much older then this.. p.s- Im no fan. Say what you want about Heyerdahl if it is serious.

  • @Vebable for some brainwashed hippie it is nazi propaganda, for the experts that have travelled, seen by their own eyes and dug deep into the subject it's historical evidence.

  • @adepsa Are you calling the established archeological community for "brainwashed hippies"?

Read my question to "Ixutul" again. You obviously misinterpreted it.

  • @adepsa But what If you brainwash a hippie? Don't you then create a Nazi?

  • Comment removed

  • @ilovefrankandbeans

    What have you read?

-Thor Heyerdahl credited the polynesians with advanced geometric measurements and he explained how they mapped the polynesia triangle.

If THE POLYNESIAN VOYAGING SOCIETY think thats wrong, they haven't read it themselves.

    -Stop calling names!

Your misunderstanding and opinion towards my character is irrelevant even if the name fits.

Calm down, read something serious, and then come back with a real explanation. No more caps lock and name-calling!

  • @ilovefrankandbeans - well prove him wrong.. instead of talking - make a video clip on youtube. and show us proof?? - this guy has not only shown me his proof, he has has docomented. and polynesians in the 70's have confirmed his travels - and sea docomentation shows the sea and wind rotation to be correct ?? - So stop yelling ALOUD. .and prove it - if you can't prove it.. then shut the fuck up = im samoan and i say this guy is telling the truth.. that explains easter island and trees miss'n

  • @vaea46 kon-tiki was just a hypothesis you dumb coconut eater, and it was disproven over 30 years ago. look up the Hokule'a, and then you'll know the truth. Master navigator Nainoa Thompson showed the world that the ancient polynesians used the stars as markers, including current patterns, directional winds and birds as a way of intentional navigation, not accidental drifting as Thor Heyerdahl suggested. You see the north star, or Hokupa'a, never moves and is used as a beacon. Grow some brains

  • @ilovefrankandbeans - hey you faggot coconut. i don't give a stuff .. if you watched the whole thing, at the end of the doco. he says.. the purpose of this. is to show that you can travel from South America to polynesian.. you dumb ass bitch.. people like you... just like to stir up shit... create your clip. so i can come on it and piss on your face.. dick faggot.

  • @ilovefrankandbeans ---Oh Graduate of Moron School,The Polynesians were Not born with the skill to navigate using the stars. This was something they "learned" themselves over"time".2000 years BEFORE they learned this, explorer number 1,2,3,4,5, tried drifting then learned about using the stars.THIS FILM is about the FIRST explorers,to "try" it this way. From different parts of the globe. They ALL did it.

  • @billy1212ist Good thing you're not a history teacher.. You'd piss off a lot of parents talking to students that way!

  • @MrSidMan --Yes Mr.Moron Man with a big mouth, people like you?In Utah, where six wives are OK,but watch tour mouth, phlem breath.Yeah,... good thing ! Your a Mormon????? judgements are not needed.Or did you notice the you were alone? Good thing your not sitting at this table too, vomit face.

  • @ilovefrankandbeans Hey man Heyerdahl just formed a hypothesis and put it to the test. He said himself that as soon as people stop questioning assumed fact the scientific world will never progress. He studied geography and zoology, and was really just an amateur anthropologist/archaeologist. But he thought human migration theory was fascinating and thank God for that. We need explorers like him to make academics reassess their ideas.Perhaps he was wrong, but thats ok with me.

  • big balls to do this

  • amazing adventure!

  • What a great story.I wanted it to go on forever.I The book is the best I ever read.Thank's for posting!

  • My favorite book of all time and my hero since read it in 1962.

  • "we found the 9 biggest trees in the forest, and we chopped them down".. Lol.. that and the pointless stabbing of a whale shark were reminders to me of a different era, when conservation wasnt quite what it is today.. but over all this is a great documentary about an amazing journey.. a huge accomplishment for anyone, whether it was thousands of years ago, fifty years ago or today..

  • @ghettoslider --Cutting the trees was what early man would have done to make the raft, are you stupid?Would you politely ask the trees to lie down?Do you do "Dumb" full time? The "BIG" fish/mammal chases away the smaller fish, they had to eat, yes?

  • Enjoyed this night the 6tth day of August 2010 by 3 friends and bottle or 2 of beer !

Muxh appreciated for the upload (i knowm they'r not easy not less time consuming)

From Dublin Ireland . Thank You

    Henry, James & Jimmy.

  • what happened to the parrot?!?!

  • @fatalblades It fell off in a storm somewhere in the middle.. Baaawk!

  • Read the book. Watching this inspired me read Heyerdahl's and it is just as thrilling and awesome as this movie.

  • Loved it

  • This is one of my favorite documentaries of all time. The only part that I didn't like was when one of the men harpooned the whale shark. He shouldn't have done that. I would have loved to be on the Kon Tiki.

  • @BTC141 yeah, body, that fish is peacefull. i gues, they were just boaring, so did childish things.

  • @thirdromeprivate Yeah, I guess so, but if I was on that boat I would have told those men not to harm the whale shark.

  • poor whaleshark its a totally harmless creature.. nice film though

  • Amazing, the men had balls back then. Resourcefulness! We're turning into chicks these days...

  • VERY CUTE !

  • I do believe us Polynesians are related to the Mayans and Aztecs. We have similar ancient stone carvings, similar culture and similar ancient stories that cant be contradicted.

  • @TrueGreatness73 you are entitled to your opinion but your wrong,I am also Polynesian and scientific facts show through DNA that we are part of a larger family the Austronesians spreading from the natives of Taiwan, phillipines and Indonesia through to melanesia ect.

  • @punakesha All scientific evidence can show is that there is some possible link between Polynesians and aboriginals of Taiwan, Philippines and Indonesia because we have a couple similar DNA traits. Thats all that scientific evidence proves. That still doesn't prove anything and that is not a fact. That DNA does not prove where we sailed, how long we got there, how many people we came with, or if we are even from there. We could of migrated there from the pacific. Theres a huge difference

  • @TrueGreatness73 Im not saying we sailed from their though it is likely, and if you actually study DNA beyond the basics its more than a couple of DNA traits its a sure thing we are all related AUSTRONESIANS look it up,all these people share not only the same DNA but all have related languages, customs and traditions,as for the mayan Aztec theory again modern science bares to differ.

  • @punakesha We share a common ancestry but that still doesnt make us related. Yes I am already aware of Austronesian. I am just saying just because we have common ancestry in DNA doesn't mean we came from there or it doesnt imply we are the same people. Ancient Polynesian stories (not the Eurpean story) tell of our people coming from a advanced sunken land. There has been a discovery of building structures under water in Japan(atlantis maybe?). Mostly sea separate that and Polynesia.

  • @TrueGreatness73 you cannot share a common ancestry common language and common traditions ect then claim not to be related it makes no sense and DNA implies exactly that,we are the same people, look at polynesian languages all so similar then investigate the language of indiginous peoples of S,E Asia their are not 1 or 2 words but many words the same and of the same meaning, which way we sailed who knows,

  • @punakesha Ok, we share a common ancestry with apes, does that mean we came from apes?? In America we speak english, does that mean we all came from England?? Us Polynesians are 52 times more likely to make it to the NFL then any other race, do you really think a typical "Austronesian" can do the same? Austronesian and language is a broad term. If your claiming that as evidence well then shit, Humans are all the same kind because they both breath and talk alike. I have done 6yrs of research.

  • @TrueGreatness73 Apes ? speaking english in america? your going off the subject mate and whats polynesians making it to the NFL got to do with anything? LOL 6 years of research on what exactly? maybe you should study modern DNA science so you know what im trying too point out to you

  • @punakesha my bad I did jump off subject a little, I was a little tipsy when I wrote that.. lol.. Anyways, I understand what your saying, Austronesian is a broad term though. Yes we are related to the South East Asians, Indonesian and phillipinos but what I am trying to say is that we are not the same yet we are related. If we were the same DNA would say that but we do share common ancestors. Did you know there was a recent study that debunked lapita ppl as our ancestors? Im not surprised tho.

  • @TrueGreatness73 after thousands of years of migrating sailing and settling of different Islands we all changed in many ways,Im Maori/Rarotongan and would be pissed if some scolar called me Indonesian or Phillipino because we are different never the less we are of the same ancient Indiginous family of people of the pacific and i respect that.

  • @punakesha Yes, I agree 100%.. Thats what I meant this whole time. You just cleared it up. Polynesians are Polynesians.

  • @TrueGreatness73 As for Atlantis many people have their theories i tend to follow the original from Plato himself who was the first to mention Atlantis to be a naval power in front of the pillars of hercules placed somewhere in the Mediterranean,I also follow this because its a Greek story not a european one who says its in japan lol.

  • Amazing !

  • A beautiful acheivement. I believe science has YET to catch up to the "primitive" past. As if, the past is much more full of wonder than that. We just haven't found all of it yet.

  • @NeterWorld to use the word "primitive" is really disrespectful. We resent that of you.

  • Thanks for the video.

  • just read this fantastic book one of the sad bits is the parrot swept over board very sad indeed!

as for knut haugland yes a true norwegian hero esp in ww2! sadly no one remains alive god bless them all!!! john clarke uk....

  • Quite an achievement to make such an amazing story SO DULL

  • Loved this film.

  • theres a continent used to be in the pacifics..itz called Mu..so yea itz sinks..and it think those are polynesians peoples lands..

  • @Cheehoo9 Yup. Im Tongan and I believe we came from a sunken continent in the Pacific. Old Polynesian stories that are passed down from generation to generation talk about us coming from a sunken land of gods. We are Gods people.

  • Im Samoan...which is Polynesianz...We Samoanz believe We came from our own..Which is Samoa..so yea..we dont believe we come from anywhere...we come from Polynesia.

  • This is an amazing video!

  • The theory: there was immigration from BOTH west and east, and the people(s) coming to Polynesia from Asia at one point irradicated the other people(s) from S-America. Although his theories have constantly been denied by experts, he did prove a lot of them to be at least possible if not plausible. His genious was in combining the arts, using individually inexplainable facts from archeology, folkklore, biology, geography etc. This was quite unheard of at the time.

  • The Polynesian languages have nothing to do with the Southamerican indians, more related to S E Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia etc.) But I guess the coastal indians of the Southamerica maybe visited the islands on their canoes.

  • Crew member and WWII hero Knut Haugland appears to have passed away on Christmas of 2009. He was the last surviving member of this expedition.

  • @Cosmoline

True... and the world is a little sadder for his passing. He was a true hero of the resistance as well as an adventurer. To his credit, he never seemed to brag or boast about his life. Thank you for remembering him.

  • very similar to the voyage that the bellifonte with captain zissou took .Yes the kife aquatic! inspiring si oh did you know that chinese fruit bats give blow jobs

  • sorry is this the original documentary film? i thought it was 77min/124mins long? instead it is 58min? thanks anyways

  • Well, the opening credits aren't from 1952, that's fer shore. This version was broadcast in Norway a few years ago; the new opening credits were created then, but I don't know when this edit was made or how much material is missing. Isn't it always that way with old films?

  • Anyway his theory about the polynesians migrated to South Pasific islan might have some truth in it.However the South Pacific islanders not solely from South America.IMost probably mix of South America and Malays who migrated from Malay archipelago thousands of years ago

  • I had read his book "Kon Tiki" again and again .Among my most favorite book.

  • Knut just died at 90 years.

  • he proved the theory. now genetic testing can show if they native peru indians are the same type of the islanders?

  • What a fantastic and intelligent documentary! I was never aware of this kind of expedition and only imagined that such things existed in the stories of Robinson Crusoe and the like. Really great stuff -- makes me wonder what other docs from before my time I've missed.

I will say that given my exposure to current films and literature I was immediately reminded of the Life of Pi (especially with reference to the teeming ocean life), as well as the Life Aquatic.

  • Knut Haugland just passed away, being the last living member of the Kon Tiki expedition. Not only was he a hero because of the Kon Tiki, he was also a member of the Norwegan resistance during WW 2 and was one of the guys who helped destroy the Nazi heavy water plant, as portrayed in the Kirk Douglas movie "The Hero's of Telemark".

  • A person that makes me proud to be a Norwegian!!!

  • The only one. And now they are all dead. So now what?

  • There are still folks in Norway that have great influence on me and others!

  • Great inspirational film from my childhood. Worth reading his book Aku Aku about Easter Island

  • asd

  • i learned of this years ago! these men are heroes!

  • that bit of coast near Quito looks like a human face looking west!

  • Columbus is well over hyped. He still is a great explorer. But he was not the first to do intercontinental sea voyages. The Vikings, the Incas and who knows who else had been doing it hundreds of years before him

  • I saw this documentary way back in 1952 or thereabouts in one of the movie houses in Pretoria, and I was also given the book. I was always hoping to see the full-length feature again, and thanks to YouTube, my wish has now come true. What a wonderful adventure that can be re-lived ove and over!!!

  • Thor Heyerdahl is my God!

  • @widdyhabb Thor Heyerdahl can suck a donkey dick that white chump deserves to get cooked alive

  • @widdyhabb read my response to Vebable below you and then you'll learn chump, your boy Heyerdahl is wrong

  • din-g-y. Emphasis on the 'g' lol

  • i love the book kon tiki!

  • Great Vid.

  • Thanks for posting this - sensational

  • great journey proving a great theory... read all his books and wish everyone on this planet could admire and treat the nature in the same way he did...

  • just read the book again - great to see this. what an awesome undertaking!

  • thanks, thanks, thanks !!! :)
