My instructor recently attacked me with a rubber knife. There was shock but I handled it. Then he got a real knife and attacked at a quarter speed, and all I wanted to do was get out of there, even when attacked in that unrealistic slow motion over extended way. Made me appreciate the danger knives present more than years of fast attacks with a rubber knife!

Look at the qualifications on his site. He claims to have 35 years of experience in 10 different martial arts. However he has no record of his teachers, or any sort of indicator of progress in ANY of these arts.
What worries me about this stuff, is it leaves a mark on someone if they think about violence too much. I can see it in them and other similar videos here.

Marc is right-don't get in that situation. But if they get you into it by following you, you have to know how to defeat them-and that means keeping the knife away from you.
I notice those close up quick-slashes are low powered and reliant on speed. If you caught their wrist when their stance is more upright, you could be at an advantage. But you must be aware of where that knife is and get hold of the wrist.
And don't forget, having a knife in their best hand leaves them vulnerable as they can't grab.

I first read Animal's book, Cheap Shots, Ambushes, and Other Lessons, almost 20 years ago, and it lead me out of a figurative blind alley and truly opened my eyes. He KNOWS his stuff, and sees things for what they are and more importantly never loses sight of what's really important, i.e., his heart and his humanity. Read his writings and you'll come away a more streetwise, technically competent, and better person in general.
I own this whole video on VHS. It is pretty good. Marc knows what he is talking about. He is to the point and shows no nonsense stuff. I don't agree with some of his stuff.

No, he isn't. Honest citizens won't use a weapon, except to defend themselves. If you take away the opportunity to legally obtain a weapon, honest citizens won't be able to defend themselves from criminals, who will get their hands on a weapon, because they'll just ignore those laws and get a weapon through illegal means.
Also, a weapon can work as an equalizer. Imagine a small, light female being attacked by a big, heavy male. Now imagine she's got a gun or knife and knows how to use it. When no citizen has a weapon, criminals won't hesitate to attack their intended victim. What worries me about this stuff, is it leaves a mark on someone if they think about violence too much. I can see it in them and other similar videos here.

Pulsar, you're right on the number about this stuff leaving a mark. Animal goes to great lengths to convey this, and disabuse the young and/or misguided of any notions to the contrary. I reccomend his book Cheap Shots, Ambushes, and Other Lessons. Says it way better than I can!

Have it. It taught me much in my twenties about thinking laterally. I learnt a bucket load of stuff about how to avoid confrontations, have more confidence in them, and other things not related to fighting at all.
You can choose not to go down the road to violence. I always thought you had to be violent to combat it, but you don't.

I notice those close up quick-slashes are low powered and reliant on speed. If you caught their wrist when their stance is more upright, you could be at an advantage. But you must be aware of where that knife is and get hold of the wrist.
And don't forget, having a knife in their best hand leaves them vulnerable as they can't grab.

Also lets be realistic. Most of you will never attain of the level of professional with hand the hand combat to be able to confidently defeat someone who has pulled a knife on you. Most of you won't even try to learn those skills, it'll just be a fantasy in your head your whole lives. But for those of us who live in the real world, the best way to beat someone with a knife is to know how to use a knife.

I first read Animal's book, Cheap Shots, Ambushes, and Other Lessons, almost 20 years ago, and it lead me out of a figurative blind alley and truly opened my eyes. He KNOWS his stuff, and sees things for what they are and more importantly never loses sight of what's really important, i.e., his heart and his humanity. Read his writings and you'll come away a more streetwise, technically competent, and better person in general.

Quick knockdown followed up by an kneebar or kimura and then backoff is always the best option. Still, i carry a knife because:
If the other catches you offguard, a knife allows for a quick response with little force and good chances of retaliation.
Coward or not, a knife is best in that situation.

No, he isn't. Honest citizens won't use a weapon, except to defend themselves. If you take away the opportunity to legally obtain a weapon, honest citizens won't be able to defend themselves from criminals, who will get their hands on a weapon, because they'll just ignore those laws and get a weapon through illegal means.

Also, a weapon can work as an equalizer. Imagine a small, light female being attacked by a big, heavy male. Now imagine she's got a gun or knife and knows how to use it. When no citizen has a weapon, criminals won't hesitate to attack their intended victim. If he can't be sure if he'll get a gun pointed at him or his guts spilled on the ground, he might just give it a second thought...
