They build a strong and driving foundation with drums and bass, layer a rhythm guitar over that, bring in horns for harmony, rhythm and punctuation, add a layer of organ/keyboards, and put the vocals as the melody. These guys are professional, practice a lot, and don't miss a beat or a note. Their execution is damn near flawless and the result kicks ass.

knew several of these guys and some from cold blood.. I can't believe i'm still alive to sit here and listen. Growing up in Brookfield Villiage in Oakland, I think I'll make this my ring tone(probably my last!)
