I dont think they grew anything in the dirt. People around here will put their carrots etc in the sand to store them over the winter. Perhaps that is what the dirt is for.
@Emsworker68 ~ Thanks for the comment and I do believe you are right. The 'dirt' is more like black sand. It is very dry and feels sandy. Could have just turned darker due to sitting there for over 25 years unused.
