Also: 'pinned tabs' might be worth implementing. However one problem that i've always had with FFox Pinned tabs was that it was basically a normal tab. If I had a facebook tab and navigated to a sub-page on facebook or even off of the site, there was no way to quickly get back to the original URL. Doubleclicking on the tab should take you back to the original pinned URL -- or there should be another way to quickly do so.
You might consider trying to put the address bar+toolbar at the bottom just to try it out. Another thing to try would be to put the 'website name' on the right side of the URL, so as not to move around the URL too much when switching between tabs. Also I think it would be kind of cool to have the search bar nested in the tab bar, right beside the clock perhaps.
Looks kind of cool, if you plan to make an OS for internet kiosks, underpowered computers, or just something that will boot super duper fast.
However, tabs at the bottom of the screen? seriously? So if I wanted to click on a different tab and change the website I would have to send my mouse *all* the way to the bottom of the screen, click the window and then bring it *all* the way to the top and type the new URL? Well, I hope it works better in practice than in theory.
good idea for netbook's but for desktop pc's.... i'm not so sure :D also i thing this shell need's more :P what about to integrate webian shell with joli os :) simple apps with simple os :D
@iAreMudkipz Cool, yeah. iTunes integration is unlikely unless someone implements it as a web app/widget - but playback of local media is under consideration
@iAreMudkipz Thanks :) An omnibar type feature is planned. iTunes controls aren't really within the scope of the project. Maybe it could be a future addon but it only really applies if you're running Shell on top of OS X or Windows doesn't it?

"Zoomable tiled window manager", piques my interest, especially with MS announcing how they intend to dumb down the desktop with Win8.
Tabs/tasklist shouldn't be at the bottom, however: it's visually inconsistent and is the only thing that stops you from being able to keep your mouse in the top 2/3rds of the screen, saving a lot of time spent tracking.
Also, I play Minecraft a lot and that would be just fine, but I also use several Voice chat services (TS3, Mumble, etc) and how the hell would I be able to talk to my friends if all I have is a browser?
@LocutusIsBorg no, this is not like Chrome OS. This is a shell (meaning it covers your desktop). Your regular OS is still there, it's just hidden hidden behind this web browser shell. This means all that other stuff that normally runs and takes up your processes is pushed to the background, giving you a lightly better performance (at least this is my understanding). I haven't tried this yet, so i'm not sure how easy it is to transition between webian and your OS.
I dont like the top and bottom bar, there should be no bottom bar, the top bar should be bigger and auto hide till you scroll up higher than the page, the apps should have a more app like shelf like tablets and phones.
The stuff you "would like to see" are already present in most of these webcentric operating systems (JoliCloud, SplashOS etc) and should already be an integral part of webian shell.
Also as most people who will give this a go are familiar with the concept, I'm not sure you really need the first 45 seconds of this video. Get to the point and differentiate yourself from your competition.
I like the split screen browsing and zoomable tiles though. Keep working on it.
i dont like this trend AT ALL. yeah i browse alot, but no web-office comes even close to msOff. offline storage?! yeah, as a backup, pre-encrypted by myself.and dont even start with games, that is at best 10 years away to come close to the quality of real games (bf,shogun.) id rather disconnect from the googlenet then giving all my info to corporations i cant trust. they should first develop a safe model for private user information, before expanding the cloud.
this is ridiculous. its called a thin-client. he says that the rest of the stuff is 'clutter' and then proceeds to say that he needs widgets etc to support the underlying system. this is no different from a simple bare bones linux distro with firefox set as the shell, with it maximized full screen.
This already exists. its called the maximize button. or chrome os. which is a silly idea also.
Do.Not.Want. I love you Mozilla, but I don't spend most of my time working in a browser. I view the web with a browser. If I want web apps on my desktop you already gave me Prism, which works great. Just stop there.
@KagetsukiZero Thanks for the feedback, if you feel you can't live without your desktop apps then you're probably not in the target audience for Webian Shell. Webian isn't a Mozilla project btw
@webianproject I didn't realize this was not a Mozilla project, nor did I really understand the context of the application. Due to my misunderstanding my comment was inappropriate, and I'd like to apologize for that. Now that I've come back understanding the context of these web shells I'd really like to see more.
@KagetsukiZero This is for people who does want it. That case you do not want it doesn't let you say them to stop doing it. Actually it is competitor for Chromebook, difference is that it still needs OS and that usual notebook is much better than some Chromebook.
@AjvarD I hadn't looked into Chromebook until I saw your comment. I now understand the paradigm a lot better, and feel my comment was not only inappropriate but also contradicts my new standing on the subject. Thank you for setting me straight. I hope to see more of Webian now, both as a competitor to Chromebook and as an independent project.
@MrClrg Thanks for asking! I'd like to address this question in a future blog post as the answer is quite complicated but it has to do with when and how Webian Shell was conceived and the desire to build an ecosystem of web apps not tied to any single vendor.
@webianproject Call me a picky, but neither Google, Chrome nor Chrome OS force me to use Google's products exclusively; I can use services like Yahoo, Bing and Novell Vibe over their software/devices perfectly. Also, Google is probably the most pro-open-source technology/code company since Sun Microsystems. Give them credit.
@MrClrg That's true, but you do have to have a Google Account in order to use a Chrome OS device and Google runs the only app store. Mozilla's Open Web Apps project has a vision of an ecosystem for installable web apps where anyone can run an app store, or vendors can simply host their own installable app. I'm not anti-Google (I worked there once and I use all their apps), but I do think it would be healthy to have multiple browser-based OSs like we have multiple browsers.
@MrClrg This is a bit different from Chrome OS. Firstly, this can do XUL+JS apps, which gives far more functionality than HTML+JS apps that you'd get with Chrome. You could have Firefox and Thunderbird both as separate applications running within this.
Looks good. I think a great feature would be a bookmark toolbar like Firefox. If it had that and if it booted fast enough I think it would be great. Is this going to be an installable OS or a livecd or just a program? Another great feature (selling point for me really) would be a full featured email client as opposed to the browser. Not sure how much more resources that would take. Doesn't seem like it would have to be too much though.
i like this idea. are you basically trying to make a browser feel like a desktop? i think thats a killer idea. you should make it themable. are you putting the tabs on the bottom of the screen to make it like a taskbar? what about workspaces? like in firefox panorama, or in linux.
@gingerkid963 I wouldn't say make the browser feel like a desktop, but ultimately replace the desktop with a browser which has some of the features of a desktop environment.
@NinjaJedi Thanks for the suggestion, if you suggest it as a feature on the GetSatisfaction page we can see what other people think of it and discuss how it could work. I've added a feature to the project tracker so it isn't forgotten.
Idea: Could you make a OS... like Chrome OS. It is much easier...
