  • Bravo!! Big Applause! That was just wonderful! Great tutorial from the beggining until the last video. I really apreciate the time you took to explain and show us the great way to play this fine song from U2. Even with the slight mistakes (I didn´t hear them), its really great. No one can beat the Edge playing, ´cause he´s a unique artist, but your style is superb! Now I am off to learn how to play this song on my new guitar.

Thanks for sharing these videos! BIG APPLAUSE!

    Cheers

    MAX

  • Yep, even better! thanks, Z

  • absolutely spectacular job man, I can't say enough good things...

  • @zyadcarr

Thanks, but Part A1 has less mistakes!

  • You are amazing man! Your covers are the best! Have you considered being in a tribute band?

  • @luirive: Thx. Someday maybe. Time is the problem, along with headaches of organizing, rehearsing, moving equipment, etc.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials You're right, I've been in two bands already and U2 is such a big influence in me and I'd be honored to have you in a band. Keep it up man!

  • Ignore @ZachDRUMMOND... this is ALL ABOUT reproducing Edge's tone, sound, and technique, period, and you are the master. Those who want original sound look elsewhere! I've now learned to play this song perfectly thanks to this detailed tutorial, and for that I thank you a million times. A+++++!

  • It kills me that you spent this much effort to reproduce someone else's tone. You have a lot of talent. You should work on your own tone. Get original. It doesn't have to be exact. Music isn't a science.

I sound really snobby, but I don't mean to offend. Just thought someone should say it.

  • @ZachDRUMMOND:

You are entitled to your opinion, but why do I have to work on my own songs or tone? This is a hobby. I'm not an accomplished musician. Who are you to tell me to "get original"? There are so many cover bands out there. Others at home like to play popular songs. Why doesn't American Idol "get original" and force all contestants to sing original songs? Music is meant to be shared and enjoyed. Teachers all over the world teach others how to play Mozart. Why can't I teach U2?

  • @ZachDRUMMOND Hm, to be honest I think that U2 would feel blessed to have fans so dedicated that they would spend hours trying to replicate their tone and creating videos about how to effectively play their songs. You sound very ignorant. Cheers.

  • @ZachDRUMMOND L00ser!!

  • @ZachDRUMMOND Congrats on the stupid comments...This guy busts his ass making tutorials that people request daily and you hit him with that?

  • Respond to this video... How do you manage to just strum those 3 strings on the intro that fast without hitting 4, 5 or 6? I'm amazed how Edge does it as well.

  • Excellent.Whats the specs of the guitar please? Strings gauges etc?

    Thanks

  • Could someone check out my cover? Thank you Michael for the awesome tutorial!

  • Very good, Did you put some chorus before the delay, or did put modulation in the Delay?

Can give the chain (delay before or after the Amp, in a loop, chorus...)

  • @jeananto: Updated tutorial with specifics to come. But, no chorus. Edge uses only modulated delays. Edge has his delays go into the amp (main input, he doesn't have an effects loop). I put my delays after my Liverpool amp modeler for various reasons.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials thank you very much

  • @U2GuitarTutorials I can't find Herdim picks anywhere.

In Poland we don't have this picks.

    Where can I buy it?

Can I ask about world wide web address, where I will be able to order this one?

  • @Rafal102able

Search under Prussia Valley Dulcimers in the US. They sell them over the Internet. I buy from them.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials Thank you very much Michael

  • where does the backing track comes from ?

  • @williamgag: see my website at u2guitartutorials on the world wide web. You will find a link to Am's backtracks there.

  • Great tutorial, but you should have probably mentioned the fact that the guitars are tuned a half step down.

    :-)

  • @vampiroangelico:

I forget this a lot. Sorry! Yes, it's in Eb.

  • first time i see a video with no dislikes

    awsome cover

  • one word : Awesome !!!

  • Great! Will the Axe standard cover the digital delay or is the ultra needed? Looks like there may be more presets on the ultra. It he ultra worth the extra $ in your opinion? Thanks

  • @TruthinessSeeker: You dont need the Ultra. It has more CPU and memory which allows more effets on at the same time. There may be a few U2 presets with shimmer, amp, cab and reverb where you may run out of CPU on the regular version. But it wont happen that often and you can work around it. I have the Ultra just in case because I use it so much.

  • Hi, first, I love your videos and you are a great teacher. I have several pedals laying around and am seriously considering selling them all and getting a Axe-Fx-ultra. Will the ultra give me what I need for digital delay to cover most of the edge's work? I have a boss DD20 now that sounds great but it has few presets and I have outgrown it. how does the axe compare to your real ac30 and pedals? THANKS!!

  • @TruthinessSeeker: Exactly correct. DD20 is a great start but if you want more presets and a tone of other awesome effects then get the Axe. Yes, the Axe will you ALL delays for ALL U2 songs. You can even model old analog and tape delays. The delays are the best on the market in my opinion.

  • i'm absolutly speechless. ... fucking brilliant

  • @stivaustine:

Very kind of you, but I messed up the beginning. Some of my other covers are better. I'm my toughest critic.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials

    Hello mate

I've try to play on cover with you but it seems that we are not tuned the same? I'm tuned regular, what's about you?

  • @stivaustine:

Eb. Edge tunes down 1/2 step on many live songs.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials

     thank you for the tip

  • @stivaustine

    i've tried to play with you but it seems that we'rent tuned the same... i'm tune E A D G B e , what's about you

  • @ChrisErvik :

Fair point. Some of the old versions of the original are cleaner than the new versions. I will eventually do this song again with the Triad and Liverpool. I can do better. Thx for watching.

  • Thanks.

  • very , very good!!!!!!! you made me hapy....

  • Perfect!

  • WOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!!!! The Best toturial

  • @mikebh99

    TRUE

  • Cool accompaniment - Love you Strat ! I have 4, but always loved the black body / scratch plate especially with the maple neck! Keep Rocking !

  • very nice.

  • hey! you got a new neck on this?! the first street vids had a rosewood neck

  • @RT101894:

Yep. Rosewood neck was flame maple also. It went into backbow, so I had it replaced. It's a long story. But I do like all maple better. Can't explain it, just like the feel.

  • man! dude! thanks for sharing all this info! you are one of the few that does!! Awsome!!! work!!!

  • excuse my newbyness but im still learning in leaps and bounds here...But is the correct tuning for this Eb? I thought it was standard E and I'm trying to match your chords and I'm way off... never a dumb question....always ask if you don't know! ;)

    Great job by the way!

  • @billyboi100:

Yes, I was playing to a backtrack of the Slane version which is Eb. Many of U2's songs are tuned down 1/2 step for the live versions.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials

I guess that gives them a little different sound when live....very cool. I must say that I have a new found respect for Edge's techniques after seeing what goes into making his sounds.... docs like history of the guitar and It Might Get Loud....very interesting

  • Jaws dropping:) havn't heard many hwo can really cover "where the streets have no name" with dignity, but you're one of the few!

thanks by the way, it's been very helpful

  • This is a truly fantastic cover. You're good!

  • great tone man! just a question: do you use some kind of compressor/booster in this song? something like the sdd3000 or the dynacomp...just to understand your signal chain better!

    thanks ;) bye

  • @Edge985:

Thx! Nope, no compression here. It's all tweeking the amp model parameters, especially the various tone parameters and a little EQ.

    M

  • Skilled musicians are so much fun to watch.

  • Why u stole Edge's quitar? ;)

  • That's excellent mate-thanks for giving the time to make these tutorials, they are really helping me.

  • Excellent !!

  • Are you holding the pick backwards like The Edge? :P Haha. Great playing, mate.

  • Is it really 6-8 repeats? When I do it using my (much less complicated) Digitech RP70, it seems like too much. Granted the delay time can be set in only 10ms increments, so it's at 350ms but it sounds like it's too much. Great job!

  • I'm counting even the very faint repeats. You dont need that many. I may have had a tad too much. But it depends on your mix (repeat level) also. 6 or more loud repeats would be too much.

  • Hi, really like what your doing in the tutorials. It looks like on this cover you tuned down a half-step from standard tuning. Also, how important do you think the speakers are to getting the tone? I know Edge uses Jensens. Thanks

  • Thx! Yes, tuned down 1/2 step per Slane version. I'm not experienced to comment on speakers. A beginner/intermediate won't know the difference. So many things go into the tone (guitar pups, amp year, speakers, levels, etc.). They key is a modulated delay into a Vox AC-30 or similar. Unless you are in a tribute band and have years of experience, the exact speaker type is not going to make the difference.

  • Great, I have always loved U2 but for some reason have always played classic rock/blues. I love learning these U2 songs because being a teen in the late 80's it feels like I am going back to MY roots!!! Ok, delay question, would the Boss-dd20 or Line 6 DL4 be the best basic delay for U2 songs? THANKS

  • Boss DD20 is a great modulated digital delay, that will work. Problem with pedals they have few presets, and if you get into U2 and use midi, you will want a lot of preset memory. I use Fractal Audio's Axe-Fx, but it's much more than a delay. The Line6 M13 is getting good reviews for it's modulated delay. You have more preset options with the M13.

  • Also, you can get other feedback by joining the yahoo group: U2_Guitar_Tutorials. Other can give you some guidance.

  • Dude.. u hav 2 much equip... need ta simplify it down a bit! :L

  • Funny you say that. I just did. Sold the POD XT Pro and TC2290. I'm now using only the Axe-Fx, M13 and A2. Rest is switching, midi, etc.

  • WOW... thanks for all your help you are the man and this video shows it!

  • Great! 5 Stars!

  • Best cover and tutorial on youtube !!!!

    Thanks a lot !!!!

  • Thank you your tutorial are very use full

  • whats the song at 12 seconds

  • Really good job, I'm learning a lot from you and truly thank you.

    Happy Holidays

  • Comment removed

  • Thx. There are a few versions of the "Edge and Echo" on YouTube (BBC interview) About 35 seconds into the clip you hear the repeats trail off. I use about 5-7 repeats.

  • Damn...dude, you rock! This is great!!

  • beautiful

  • hi.. :) could you tell me if you have removed the bright cap from your vox? :) i am going to buy a weber blue dog 30w, do you think it is a good speaker for u2? :) thanx a lot, michael, thanx for your lessons :)

  • No AC-30 used here. It's all Fractal Audio Axe-Fx, including the amp model in the Axe.

But I do have a new AC-30 that was modded to JMI specifications and, yes, the bright cap is removed or changed.

  • can you tell me the exact modifications you had? :) i have an ac15 new and i would like to modify it ... is it expensive? thanx a lot again :)

  • The person who did it is out of business. It was a lot: caps/resistors replaced; transformer replaced, hand-wired; installed Weber Blue and Silver speakers; etc. Total cost was about $900.

Someone on the U2_Guitar_Tutorial Yahoo group might be able to recommend someone to mod your amp for you.

  • my god... 900 dollars :D at the moment i am going to change the wharfedale with the weber blue alnico... 30 watt without dope and 8 ohm, right? :) thanx again :)

  • Yes, lightly doped.

  • Awsome job, as always. I"m surprised you haven't taken on with or without you yet (a comment you've probably already addressed before).

  • I have promised WOWY for a while now. But I'm not happy with the sustainer in my other Strat, so it's in the shop being upgraded to a Fernandes. I could use the eBow, but I want to play it with the sustainer guitar I built.

  • How does The Edge achieve that sustain? With eBow?

  • He has used the eBow, but as far as I know over the years he uses a Fernandes sustainer guitar. Neck pickup is a sustainer.

  • @maxdad :

As you probably saw, I finally did WOW also. ;-) Came out better than Streets actually, I think. This Streets version had some mistakes.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials You rock, as always. BTW maxdad=kfliegner (you can see talent skips a generation)

  • @kfliegner:

    Ha!

  • Excellent Michael! So difficult to join the odd time at the start to the main riff - but you have it nailed. I've spent all week learning "Beautiful Day" from your tutorial. "streets" will be next. Just got the TC Electronics "Repeater" which is great for "Edge" type delay.

    Thanks

  • you rock!!!!! --- hey fellas, finally i figured out the dotted 8th setting on a boss dd-3. set to 800ms, f.level 3 o'clock, f.back 9 o'clock, d.time 11 o'clock (make sure it's 11 NOT 10. awesome!!

  • fantastic my friend, I have not lost any of his videos and I am waiting for new ones with much anxiety, I expect you to teach new U2 songs and their videos are of high quality, Prabéns and a big hug from his friend in Brazil

  • Great stuff Michael

You have nailed it. Your sound and playing is spot on.

  • Still trying to catch up with you, Mick and the rest of the gang. Many thanks to everyone on the U2_Guitar_Tutorials group on Yahoo for their help. I did not learn this stuff on my own.

  • Great cover Michael! Thanks a lot for your efforts! Simon

  • Great job!! All of us The Edge fans around the world are greatful for your excelent tutorials. Thanks a lot!!!

  • Great!!!

  • one of the best covers of this song I've seen on Youtube. wow :)

  • that's right! thank You man
