wow! i remember the host of new wave theatre during its brief tenure on early MTV. i later learned that he died of a heroin overdose. but i commend him for doing his best to bring the newest underground music to the masses. and yes, i had this album. i think i inherited it from either my sister mika or my brother kris. i foolishly traded it for suicidal tendencies first album.
I love all the comments that always say "back when music was good blah blah blah" you sound like your dad around the time this came out. How soon we forget? It's not as if 45 Grave, Germs, Black Flag, whoever else were all over the radio and the TV. It was all Bee Gees and Leif Garrett.
@ultramouse Any weekend in LA we could see any of those bands depending on how far you wanted to drive. If you didn't have a car, no problem. I don't recall anyone who asked not getting a ride. Ya, it was a pretty cool time and I knew it.
man, back in the day when there was such a thing as punk and rock and roll now everything is disney corporate bullshit NOONE dose it themselves they just suck off anyone and sell out.
Wow. This comments thread reads like a high school lunchroom. It's fucking 45 Grave. They played darker punk. People called it deathrock a little later. That's probably the best name to use for it now. Simple.
@gothicgrowler Quien quiera puede ser lo que quiera, o para ser gotico hay que pasar un ritual? De todas formas me parece una gilipollez ser "algo" perdiendo tu identidad con un grupo de gente.
I heard this song first from The Nerve Agents, then heard the original on the George Van Orsdel Radio show. If you like this song and have not heard The Nerve Agents or GVO Radio... please do yourself a favor... google them.
i used to love this band, donnie from the germs plays drums for this band. i have to admit though after hearing the germs and alice bag band / the (original) bags i stopped listening to it as much, to put it simply goth was getting bigger and bands like 45 grave and tsol started to do that dark punk stuff ie ;rybofalvin / code blue / evil /darker my love ;its way better than modern "punk" but not as good as the early punk scene.
Damn.. an 80's band.. the singer could have been my mom lol. Anyway, this is pretty sick. Some people might not like the singer but it's horror punk, and I guess that's the way it was meant to be. Just like other different style of music. Rap, Metal, Opera, Country, etc.
Call it goth, call it punk, call it "death rock", call it anything you like...this is one of the greatest songs of the 80's. File it next to Party Time, under "fucking awesome beyond belief".
Love the wild questions from the host at the end: "What's the meaning of life for new-wavers in Los Angeles?"
@wdmounger Wow, good for your friend. Never heard of them. I, however, know everyone in this band, played gigs with them, and came of age in the SoCal punk scene in the late 70's and early 80's. So yes, I am 'hipper' than you and I still stand by my statement that you just don't get how influential 45 Grave was.
Actually lol i don't know why i called them gothic im the only one that listens to goth music and dresses goth they are just posuers but they didn't claim to be gothic in the first place
hahahahahahaha, one of me mates can laugh like that!
though she's a black-metalhead... =\
still, you should just hear her screams and growls, another one of me mates (who's more into heavy-metal and metalcore), who wants to date her told her a joke, she stared laughing and he thaught that he was talking to satan him\herself! :D
This was on UHF channel 52 & 22 in LA area. We did not have cable TV in the LA/OC area until 1983. It originally aired on Friday nights, but they used show reruns during the week at 4 or 5 o'clock. The production was first rate b/c David Jove was well funded & I think seen himself like those jazz patrons whom recorded not for profit but rather for documentation of something truly revolutionary. There is a building on the campus of Harvard that bears his name.
dont you think that the band members should decide wat genre they are? there are just way too many types of music now days. plus whats so wrong with goths? goth is a very respectable subculture thats been around a long time. better to be mistaked by preps for a goth than an emo
nuthin is wrong with "goth" folks. its just that people today steretype goths as dudes wearing trench coats shooting up schools. most people that throw the term goth around think its marilyn manson and no nothing about 80's music like 45 grave. i really dont give a shit. how bout we just call it death squad music.
the l.a./o.c. punk scene in the early 80's really took a turn for the darkside. "death rock" was pretty much born in SoCal. that just seems strange to me. christian death, 45 grave, tsol, even social d seemed like a darker band back then.
@rickhorror Sure, the 80's saw a boom of musical innovation, but it had just as much crap as any other period of time. There are lots of great bands out today, but you have to look for them just like you had to look for bands like 45 Grave in the 80's.
I'm a Christian, and I'm mostly good I would say. This song reminds me of nearly all so-called "Christians" though. Who else knows "Christians", who are just EVIL.
Benny Hinn and the Pope just announced a tour together where they will rape infants to death and eat dog shit on stage. They had to book two nights at Madison Square Garden, both nights sold out very quickly, but I got my tickets.
i had this record. i stole it from my older brother when i was 14. i traded it on what was supposed to be a temporary basis for suicidal tendencies first album with my friend Todd Rudis. i gave him back the suicidal album after i taped it but that f*cker didn't give me the 45 grave album back.
since you are a young person ill forgive you for your lack of knowing but in terms of what is "goth" and what isnt .. the original term for this type of music was called Death Rock, its the jocks and preps that gave it the label goth,

No, I would call Nirvana grunge. I hate the emo stereotypes just as much as you do. You have no idea how much I am called emo. I'm not dumb enough to call everything emo like other people are.
@GothycDreams I know how that one goes ... I have idiotic friends who do that all the time ... its starting to replace the use of the word "gay" people calling things they think are bad gay ... now they are just calling it emo its kind of lame...
