@discocreator76 These aren't Favorits. They're completely different cars, totally uncomparible to the rearengined Skoda's in this vid. So... how can you judge?
BTW: Mine are running great, absolutely no problems.
@mickeymoose76 No. The first generation of Favorits were badly put together. The brown plastic interiortrim was shite. The only good thing was the engine block, which is used a lot in rearengined Skoda's these days. The old rearengined cars were a lot better (but more oldfashioned). The Favorit became a (lot) better car after 1993, when the interior-trim was improved enormously, and an injection-unit was installed on the engine. But the first Favorit isn't my favorit!
@discocreator76, Skodas had a rather good opinion. Don't judge the whole car make on the basis of one car. My friend owned an Opela Astra and it was also a disaster, although Opel make good cars. Of course, Skoda was not as good as Opel, but in a communist country they had less money to develop their cars and they had to produce'em very cheaply. Skodas had projects in 1970's which could rival with BMW as an example. unfortunately, No one in Czechoslovakia was interested in producing such cars
always use 1% two stroke oil in your fuel to prevent engine and fuel system wear and corrosion caused by modern E10 Eco Fuel! Its just too dry and aggressive to your engine and pump and tank materials. 2 Stroke oil neutralizes the acid in the modern eco-fuel.
Not really a wonder. Skoda was sold very well in Europe. People buy cars anyway, and don't pay attention to the political climate it was sold under.
Ne tak docela zázrak. Škoda se prodávají velmi dobře v Evropě. Lidé kupovat auta stejně, a nevěnují pozornost na politické klima bylo prodáváno pod. (Já si to v překladu stroj, doufám, že to má smysl.)
picmario, Zetor had a direct injected Diesel engine ready for serial production in 1949, when others didnt dare thinking about developing one. The Central office decided that communist farmers shouldnt have this modern technology...
No jo...propagační video jakéhokoliv výrobce nakecá tuny keců. Na druhou starnu je s podivem, že mnoho z tehdejších Škodovek jezdí v horším či lepším stavu dodnes. To se o různých západoevropských vozech říct nedá.

its sad to see how cars had changed from the brass, chrome and leather beauties back in the early part of the last century to the horrible, bland, low quality heaps of the shit the Estelle and favorit was!!
Its sad to see that some people on YouTube have nothing better to do than posting sad and depressing replies everywhere, and think that anyone gives a shit!!
oh i see youve a thing about these horrible cars, sorry i didnt realise id touched a nerve!! only the most ardent weirdos can like these cheesey, low tech cheese machines!
how do you know what kind of a person i am, all i am saying is that the pre-VW skodas were terrible cars, like Ladas, FSOs, and Yugos, I made a mistake a few years ago and bought a Favorit and it was the worst car I ever owned, truly terrible...
Well, you get judged by the way you react to people. That's all in your own hands. As far as the cars are concerned, the Favorits I owned (1989, 1993, 1994 models) were all extremely reliable. You had a bad one. The rearengined cars haven't let me down either.
I don't insult people. You will never see me calling someone a weirdo. And saying to a dedicated footballplayer that football is a bland and horrible cheesy heap of shit game isn't just speaking an opinion, it's trying to yank his chain. The reaction you're gonna get is similarly unfriendly. But I think you already know that....
Nothing wrong with Skodas, old and new, great rally cars. My Favorit and Rapid were awesomely reliable. They should not be compared with Yugos and Ladas, Ladas were recycled Fiats anyway, so in your terminology Fiats are junk too.
My favorit was actually a really, really bad car, I also had a Lada Riva 1500E a few years after and the Lada was a much more reliable car than the Skoda, as for fiats being junk, any car that is built long after its time and is not only built badly, but built out of cheap materials Is junk, yes, Im sure the Original Fiats they were based on were ok at the time they were designed...
I know someone with a VW that always broke down. I also know someone owning a Opel Vectra who has had only lots of trouble. I guess in your opinion these marques are bad too? You can always run into a bad car. I just returned from the Czech Republic with my Favorit, it has already travelled all over Europe without any problems. I guess I am a liar?
I too have had a VW golf that was plagued with issues, but I was merely pointing out that the Favorit was the worst car I have ever owned, this does not constitute me calling anyone a "liar"!
I know that 'proč' means 'why', and 'mluvíte anglicky' means speaking English. So the question is: why is it in English (I'm guessing)? Because this was for Western customers, made by the British Skoda importer.
I would like to have a red rapid or garde, but with original sporty seats, dashboard etc.- all original from the 80´s. But I´m worried ´bout the ride. It isn´t very safe.
The Rapid and Garde don't have the pendulum-backaxles like the sedan, but a more modern type of suspension. The ride is much more 'safe'. Allthough you will always feel the engine at the rear. That's something that you learn to love or to hate.
I guess you are right, but I was thinking about the passive safety. The empty crumple zone in the front, and the non-collapsible steering wheel... More or less- I still like the design and the idea of the car.
Then just buy one! The Skoda Rapid/105/120/130 scores the same in a NCAP test as the VW Golf II. Older cars are almost always less safe as a modern car.
Hi Bonallaco. I think it's a video from a car-show in England in the beginning of the eighty's. Someone in the Skoda Club Netherlands got a hold of this, and made copies for members of our club. But because the tape is so old, the quality drasticly reduced. So I decided to digitalize the 'remains' before it doesn't work at all anymore and nobody can watch them anymore.
I presume you mean 'volume cars'? Beautiful cars are still being made like Alfa Competizione, but only for the wealthy few ! Skoda could have made the Tudor coupe but VW politics said no.
I don't know what you mean with the first sentence. But you're right about the Tudor, VW was too afraid it would 'steal' VW-buyers, because within the VW group the marques may not compete with each other.
sorry, replied to wrong person! Other guy said 'all the most beautiful cars have been built' and I meant by 'volume' i.e. mass-production, yes, but for exclusive manufacturers and their exclusive customers beauty is still offered !
Tudor was styling exercise by Dirk van Braeckel, just before he designed the Bentley Continental GT ! The same engine is in the Phaeton but compared to Tudor it is ugly ! Skoda will only build 'family cars'
O.k. Now I get it. But I have to agree, the design of most 'consumer-cars' nowadays is anonimous, and has no character. Only the expensive cars are allowed some character now. There are a few exeptions like that Volvo, but thats it! It's not a coincidence that there are so much 'retro-designs' these days.
All cars of now are designed with one idea in mind, and that's making money. While the old cars all have a different story of how they came into the world, which gave them their own indistinctible character. You ended up with cars that were completely different from each other.
Anyone buying an Audi wouldn't buy a VW if he was the last person on earth. Now there are so few differences between these cars that most people wouldn't even care what badge was on the hood. On the outside you can barely see the difference either. Technically most cars are the same because of endless fusions between carmakers, so they drive the same also. Maybe cars are better nowadays, but so is my fridge!
Thanks again, there are a lot of photo's I hadn't seen before. If you look at the prototypes Skoda made, Skoda was technically way ahead of VW. It's so annoying that a lot of people totally forget that.
Exactly! That engine was good for production. But they had to use VW engines, because 'it was cheaper'. Yeah, right. Now Skoda may build the 1.2 3-cylinder for the Fabia. What an honour...
:=D :=D Almost everybody makes jokes about this 1.2 engine. Like this one: What is so good about the HTP engine? When repairing it, you only need to buy 3 spark plugs! and so on... :=D
Yep, and the jokes, thats what we really want to get rid of, Skoda deserves better. In contradiction to all this, I completely love the old, outdated rearengined cars. Sometimes it seems strange...
My grandpa has a 30 year old Škoda 120L in a perfect shape. Only the right front door is from another car because someone hit him in a parking lot. And I am into older cars as well. My first car was a Moskvich. :=D Now I drive a Scirocco...its a VW...20 years old.
The irony... Allthough the Scirocco is a future classic. Here they sometimes appear too, but I think they are becoming rare here. I hope your grandpa keeps the car! Mine is 30 years also.
My grandpa would keep it, but my uncle wants to buy him another car...maybe a VW Golf MK3. And why? To be honest, old Škodas are not so safe when involved in a crash. Some time ago, one czech motoristic magazine made a crash test with a Škoda 105. Dont even try to guess, what happend. If you want to take a look at it, send me a message with your email, I will send it to you. ;=)
Yes, I have seen the pages of that test, and it is indeed not very safe. But surprisingly the Golf II from the same era performes just as bad (that surprised me). They are old cars. The Golf Mk3 performs a lot better in that crash test, thats for sure. The Skoda 105 crash test is actually on YouTube, someone apparently filmed the test with his handycam. It's in my Favorites-list. I can send you the video too.
I also havent known that there was a video for this test. The problem with the test was that it wasnt really NCAP-like. They used a concrete block instead of a deformable one. So they tried to compensate it with a lower speed of 50 km/h. But it didnt work that well. :=D
That is indeed the problem, so still we don't know much. I try to reassure myself that a lot of 30 year old cars perform bad in a crash. But it's better not to crash at all, and drive safely.
Thats true, you can drive safely, but you never know, which idiot can crash into you. And those (sometimes drunk) idiots always survive and innocent people die... That is the justice...
True. Allthough I already crashed into a broken loose cow 10 years ago, doing 100 km/h with a Skoda Rapid 130. I'm still alive. Maybe everybody needs a little goodluck too. I'm not about to sell the car for that, but I can imagine your grandpa does. Sad that my financials aren't that great, and the Czech Republic is so far away. Otherwise I would gladly buy that Skoda 120 from him.
Škodas in a perfect shape are worth about 500€, not more. My grandpa treated it like a child. My grandparents also had a 20 year old TV. This week, they bought a new LCD TV. So, maybe its time to move on...
I know what you mean. The older generation has learnt to save up and take good care of their stuff. It's the same here with the elderly people. Thats something to admire, because some people these days do exactly the opposite.
That is what bugs me a bit. Back then, everything was made or built to last for decades. But nowadays, everyhing is made to last for a couple of years and sometimes not even that. I can see that in cars, mobile phones...actuallly almost all electronics today is rubbish-made quality made in China. :=(
True. Even toys made in China falls apart when you only take it out of the box. It's a throw-away society now. Maybe thats also why I like the older cars. So much more character, and you can fix them if they break.
Yes, its about the character and the design. The most beautiful cars have already been built. Todays design is only consumer-like, with some exceptions like Volvo C30.
That is the car Skoda has been working on from the beginning of the 1980's. Jaroslav Kindl designed it. Later officials called the whole project off, after the car was already hand built and ready for production. They then hired Bertone, which came up with the Favorit. When this movie was made, they were still busy with the first car.
I was trying to seek in Google for pictures of this car but I've only found some prototypes of the Favorite back in 1983. My suspicious is that the Czechs designers have made de basic line of what would become the Favorit, and then they give the project to the Italians in Bertone so they could do some tweaks to make him more western-consumers design friendly.
Also, saying that the design is from Bertone did help the volume sales. This isn't the first time that a car company delivers their own designs to Italian style companies. BMC made it all the time during the 50's and 60's with great success too!!
Great video!! I'm going to Czech Republic next February to make Erasmus, in Ostrava. I'm forward too look for some used Skoda I can bring back home. My favourite are 110r or a Rapid, but I would be happy with an old 120 saloon...!
Can anyone give me some advices about these cars, like maladies that I should be aware?! All the help is welcome!!
If you want to buy one, you should be looking at the whole car. In every case you are looking for an old car, and there can be anything wrong with it. Look for rust, leaking head gaskets, noisy rear wheel bearings, the lot. Just look for a car in good condition. Have fun searching!
Geil, ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass sowas damals im Osten gab. Echt beeinduckend.

Ford Flatheads had 3 main crank bearings.
So, the Rapid 130 has 3 main bearings.
Insufficent for higher horespower.
The thrust bearings should be American style as well.
Yes, Skoda is a great concept, but it is too dangerous for modern traffic.
But with a full safety cage, who knows.

Yes it was and thats why VW killed off the 1.6 engine made by Škoda engineers. :=(
czelecco87 4 years ago
Exactly! That engine was good for production. But they had to use VW engines, because 'it was cheaper'. Yeah, right. Now Skoda may build the 1.2 3-cylinder for the Fabia. What an honour...
classicczech 4 years ago
:=D :=D Almost everybody makes jokes about this 1.2 engine. Like this one: What is so good about the HTP engine? When repairing it, you only need to buy 3 spark plugs! and so on... :=D
czelecco87 4 years ago
Yep, and the jokes, thats what we really want to get rid of, Skoda deserves better. In contradiction to all this, I completely love the old, outdated rearengined cars. Sometimes it seems strange...

My grandpa has a 30 year old Škoda 120L in a perfect shape. Only the right front door is from another car because someone hit him in a parking lot. And I am into older cars as well. My first car was a Moskvich. :=D Now I drive a Scirocco...its a VW...20 years old.
czelecco87 4 years ago
The irony... Allthough the Scirocco is a future classic. Here they sometimes appear too, but I think they are becoming rare here. I hope your grandpa keeps the car! Mine is 30 years also.
classicczech 4 years ago
My grandpa would keep it, but my uncle wants to buy him another car...maybe a VW Golf MK3. And why? To be honest, old Škodas are not so safe when involved in a crash. Some time ago, one czech motoristic magazine made a crash test with a Škoda 105. Dont even try to guess, what happend. If you want to take a look at it, send me a message with your email, I will send it to you. ;=)
czelecco87 4 years ago
Yes, I have seen the pages of that test, and it is indeed not very safe. But surprisingly the Golf II from the same era performes just as bad (that surprised me). They are old cars. The Golf Mk3 performs a lot better in that crash test, thats for sure. The Skoda 105 crash test is actually on YouTube, someone apparently filmed the test with his handycam. It's in my Favorites-list. I can send you the video too.
classicczech 4 years ago
I also havent known that there was a video for this test. The problem with the test was that it wasnt really NCAP-like. They used a concrete block instead of a deformable one. So they tried to compensate it with a lower speed of 50 km/h. But it didnt work that well. :=D
czelecco87 4 years ago
That is indeed the problem, so still we don't know much. I try to reassure myself that a lot of 30 year old cars perform bad in a crash. But it's better not to crash at all, and drive safely.
classicczech 4 years ago
Thats true, you can drive safely, but you never know, which idiot can crash into you. And those (sometimes drunk) idiots always survive and innocent people die... That is the justice...
czelecco87 4 years ago

So, maybe its time to move on...
czelecco87 4 years ago
I know what you mean. The older generation has learnt to save up and take good care of their stuff. It's the same here with the elderly people. Thats something to admire, because some people these days do exactly the opposite.
classicczech 4 years ago
That is what bugs me a bit. Back then, everything was made or built to last for decades. But nowadays, everyhing is made to last for a couple of years and sometimes not even that. I can see that in cars, mobile phones...actuallly almost all electronics today is rubbish-made quality made in China. :=(
czelecco87 4 years ago 2
True. Even toys made in China falls apart when you only take it out of the box. It's a throw-away society now. Maybe thats also why I like the older cars. So much more character, and you can fix them if they break.
classicczech 4 years ago
Yes, its about the character and the design. The most beautiful cars have already been built. Todays design is only consumer-like, with some exceptions like Volvo C30.

By the way, the new car showed in the video, is that the Favorit?! It definitely wasn't a rear engine car...!
vitorskoda 4 years ago
That is the car Skoda has been working on from the beginning of the 1980's. Jaroslav Kindl designed it. Later officials called the whole project off, after the car was already hand built and ready for production. They then hired Bertone, which came up with the Favorit. When this movie was made, they were still busy with the first car.
classicczech 4 years ago
Forgot to mention; The car was front wheel drive, and modern at the time.
classicczech 4 years ago
I was trying to seek in Google for pictures of this car but I've only found some prototypes of the Favorite back in 1983. My suspicious is that the Czechs designers have made de basic line of what would become the Favorit, and then they give the project to the Italians in Bertone so they could do some tweaks to make him more western-consumers design friendly.
vitorskoda 4 years ago
Also, saying that the design is from Bertone did help the volume sales. This isn't the first time that a car company delivers their own designs to Italian style companies. BMC made it all the time during the 50's and 60's with great success too!!

Great video!! I'm going to Czech Republic next February to make Erasmus, in Ostrava. I'm forward too look for some used Skoda I can bring back home. My favourite are 110r or a Rapid, but I would be happy with an old 120 saloon...!
Can anyone give me some advices about these cars, like maladies that I should be aware?! All the help is welcome!!
vitorskoda 4 years ago
If you want to buy one, you should be looking at the whole car. In every case you are looking for an old car, and there can be anything wrong with it. Look for rust, leaking head gaskets, noisy rear wheel bearings, the lot. Just look for a car in good condition. Have fun searching!
classicczech 4 years ago
Humm, not an easy task I see...! I will probably need a translator first!! Thank you for your healp.

Now I understood why the rear suspention is SO wrong! They had women there, to do the designer work :D
