Muzzles are to prevent injuries. Their skin is thin, no body fat. It does not puncture, but tears, always needing stitches. They can eat and drink muzzled. Muzzles also work better than the "collar" after surgery. Retired dogs are used to muzzles as long as it is not used as punishment.
Its so sad that I am forced to ask "How can any of you think this is humane?" They have muzzles on. No opening their mouths to stretch or yawn. They're in cages, driven by jelousy to watch the other dogs run around happily. Call me a hippie, but I consider this cruel.
@verypen You obviously didn't look at how big the muzzles are, retard. They are more than big enough for them to do anything and everything they could if they didn't have them on. They are to prevent nipping, as greyhounds do not have a lot of fur and thinner skin. Have a little bit more intelligence before posting idiotic statements.
It wouldn't make any difference whether it was a group of Greyhounds or a group of another breed of dog it would still be safer to muzzle them, incase they fought or didn't get along, it makes sense, and also greyhounds are not made aggressive to be able to race because there is no aggression involved in chasing...
it has nothing to do with them being intensly trained at all, they are not trained to chase, they are the same as a hunting or cattle dog it is just in their nature to chase..Greyhounds are NOT aggresive animals at all, have you ever been in the company of one? they are one of the most loving placid animals you will ever find, sure put something small and fluffy in front of them and they will pounce on it, but agressive not at all, go and actually spend time with a greyhound before you comment
I train Greyhounds and we do not school them for that reason at all, I understand that there are bad trainers out there and these ones should be banned but they are deff not schooled for it they either chase or they dont, there is no inbetween, you cant make them chase is they are nonchasers, I think it is greyt that you have fostered them there needs to be more that do so, I have one right now sleeping on my couch. I just think people need to learn more before judging
I just said we dont school them, I do accept full responsibilty for my dogs from cradle to grave hence the reason one is asleep on my couch, like I said people need to understand before judging, love they are a financial liability from the day you get involved in racing believe me people dont do it for the money, what you spnd on your dogs to what you get back if your lucky enough to get a winner is no where near the same, why dont you come spend a day on my property, you'll change your mind
its a minority not a majority that do that to dogs, I take it you arent in Australia, we have very tough laws on cruelty and what happens with the dogs if they arent running anymore
yes I did know about that and at the first stewards inquiry he was banned for 10 years and unfortunatly, in july he appealed and discustingly it was reduced to just 12 months and a good behaviour bond for 2 years, I have also wrotten to Peter Ali the CEO of Greyhound Racing in SA and he agrees that the 10 years was an appropriate penalty for what he did but it was an independant body for the appeal (it was requested) they actually thought they would be harder not more leiniant,
so unfortunatly they are to blame for the riducolus penalty not the greyhound racing board, this man in particular should not be allowed to own any animal at ALL, he already was charged a few years ago, with striking and throwing a greyhound, so you would think having prior cruelty to animals that he would have been given a much harsher sentence
And use go on about racing greyhounds being locked up in SMALL CAGES fuck sake look at the cages in the video i wouldnt put a fucking yorkshire terrire in there never mind a greyhound!
They wear muzzles because when you have a large group of dogs together like that, it is safer for the dogs. Just in case one of them decides they want to fight. It is very rare, but greyhounds have very thin skin, so injuries can happen quickly, with EVERY dog trying to get in on it.

If the greyhounds had'nt been so intensley trained to 'chase' its quarry, they would'nt need muzzling.
A puppy that does not make the grade or is too slow would never need muzzling.
Beautiful creatures made aggressive for the sake of 'sport'!

Greyhounds are schooled to intensify their innate ability to hunt by sight. Those that don't chase or are too slow are more often than not culled.
Yes - Ive been in the company of more than one. I have 3 fostered greyhounds - all abandoned and dumped by their previous owners.

Why do you school them then?
I dont think its great I have to foster greyhounds.
Dont you think the trainers and owners should accept responsibility for their dogs from cradle to grave?
What gives the to right to discard a greyhound once it becomes a financial liablity and then go and buy a new dog?

I live in the UK but I've had debates with Australians before on forums and the attitude is the same the world over.
Commercial greyhound racing will always attract an element of society which will exploit greyhounds for financial greed.
The governing bodies do very little to deter these people otherwise we wouldn't continually be subjected to horror stories of abuse and neglect.
The most recent case in Australia is the guy who unashamedly cut off a greyhounds tail - with scissors!
