  • Demo version. Sounds like the intro to "Time out of mind" with some truly Fagenesque chord changes.

  • Can these guys make anything that is not remotely incredible ?

  • you can use a program to convert the wmv files to mp3 from here... you can rip them down in either format. get a kid to show you how to do it. that's how i learned. if i say more, i'll be spammed.

  • where can you download this?

  • @steelydanf1fan96

This is from the Gaucho outtakes I believe.

  • I think this is the most gentle song the dan has ever done. there is nothing strange or nasty about it. it's clean, straightforward, simple. for that reason, maybe my favorite lyrically..i would feel comfortable covering this one in front of a live audience.

  • Love luv LUV this song

  • This is so fuckin FUNKY!!!!! I sure wish they had left this on the album!! It's kinda

similar to their early recordings, but with the electric 'eightiesfied sound....

  • Hi, How did you get your hands on this jem, great job....Ken

  • Wow, there's something really lovely about this. One can only wonder what would have come of it if they'd seen it through. At moments it feels like Any world that I'm welcome to - as if it's coming from a similar place emotionally. Great piano, as usual...

  • Has Steely Dan done anything bad? This is a great song...

  • I wonder if they broke this song down into fragments and created a new cut altogether for Gaucho. There oddly familiar in sound @ certain points...Anyone who has seen how Josie came about would understand me.

  • Damn, this is the first time I've heard this, and I already think it ranks up with some of their best stuff. I do like Gaucho, but really, that album could have used a more rootsy song like this to balance out the rest of the record's interminable 80's slickness. Imagine this demo with a tight drum track and some horns and guitar, and you can already hear the party coming back to life!

It's also fascinating to hear the Fagen/Becker creative process at work , how they start out their songs...

  • Anybody got the piano tabs to this?

  • melgorm come back

  • in response to wobrian3, it should be "halfway thru the gate where you will SLIP inside"....ok?......kool song!

  • A song about heaven -- how many Evangelical Christians have I heard talk this way?? Absolutely brilliant.

  • @wobrien3 you got the lyrics to this? I'd like them please, if you got it?

  • I was born and raised and lived and loved and died Today But when I saw the lights my work was here Hooray It took me by surprise It was right before my eyes (Chorus) Talkin' 'bout my home The city in the sky Talkin' 'bout my home The only home I ever known Well you're halfway through the gate where you will [live] Inside Well I knew a dude who said it ain't no trip He lied Well I saw his face, oh god When we crossed the promenade (Chorus)
  • Well now I've got to catch that wunderbar

    Express

So I'll just say good evening to you all

    God bless

Just put me on that train

    To that great celestial plane

    (Chorus)

  • @wobrien3 thank you

  • It's been a while since I read the dan biography and I don't have my copy right now, but is the song they scrapped because Donald said it was too hard to sing?

  • I wish they performed this song on the album.

  • I bet the Dan love the fact that their totally rough 'b sides' are all over the net!!

  • Jesus christ, just shut up and enjoy the music. Goddamn.

  • @mordanai indeed

  • Well stated...

  • @mordanai Yes, it does get thick here, doesn't it?

  • Your all fools to argue the merits of Beatles vs. The Dan. I love them both, and keep in mind The Beatles were nearly 10 years Don & Walts seniors. SD had the luck of being raised so close to the early 60's jazz... I'lll take a guess and say most of you ain't from Brooklyn, we had music people from other parts of the world could only dream of...... Parkers Band Baby!

  • Yep...Parker's band. Hahaha.... Man alive! I would have loved to see that cat swing once, but I am lucky enough to have seen Steely Dan four times in my life.

  • @deBierce01 They brought that new saxaphone sensatioooooooon

  • sounded like Kulee Baba at the beginning

  • Well just to let you know the beatles was one of Walter Becker and Donald Fagans influences as well as Bob Dylan. Anyways where can do you get this music from how can I obtain a copy

  • you don't know me but I'm you're brother....taken it to the streets!

  • Oh man, I love this tune.

Americana-blues piano, and another great melody.

"I was born and raised and lived and loved and died, today."

    What a great opening line.

  • @LikeWiseLikeYou Do you have the rest of the lyrics to this song?

  • Hearing these amazing outtakes reminds me of some of the jamming sessions of the Beatles. Some of their jamming sessions were so inspired that they recorded them on 1 or 2 takes. Their harmonies, though tight and logical, easy to listen to and follow, were not as stacked, that is, having various layers of tonality, tone color diversity extraordinaire, nuance of chord progression variation from normal parameters, as SD. I'm a fan of both legendary collaborations.

  • it is musically illegal to compare steely dan to those illiterate beatles and their boring nursery rhymes that do not rhyme and gats no riddims or dim riddims

  • Are you serious? You're a neanderthal if you really believe this.

  • i have never bought a beatles record

  • That explains why you feel that way.

  • thank you!

  • Amen! Beatles = the most overrated band in rock history. Musical children compared to the sophistication, depth and layering of SD.

  • You're talking out of your ass, Please don't embarass yourself further.

  • @atty1chgo No sorry, I'm just not a 'Beatles are better than sliced bread' Kool-Aid drinker like you. Yes, they were pioneers and wrote some great lyrics, but musically they were like children compared to the depth of the SD duo's talents. Not talking about who influenced whom. Talking about talent. You don't teach that and you don't learn that.

  • both bands are great songwriters... but yeah steely dan's songs are deceptively simple, but very complex... much more of an aquired taste... but once you get them.. you never go back

  • @EMPower08 Amen, brother.

  • @swebbie I agree with your comment.

  • @swebbie Your right. Steely Dan is much better, in my opinion. The Beatles are boring, and are exclusively pop music.

  • you are so arrogant

  • Cocky but... I liked your comment, bro.

    "Musically ilegal" ---> really good.

  • The goal for donald and walter was to make song you'd never get tired of. I understand this song didnt make the album, the get easily tired of the licks. Its awesome but cant compete with the other tunes of late steely dan (aja gaucho etc)

  • Some of those notes reminds me of Kulee Baba.

  • Kulee Baba is one of my favorite Fagen outtakes.

  • with some polishing it will turn out as instant steely dan classic.

  • If this kinda stuff didn't make the album imagine what else is on the Dan's cutting room floor!!

  • not likely, D&W seem to hate some of their old stuff...

  • Sounds more on the Pretzel Logic style. As levanyzzuf said, this doesnt seem to belong to Gaucho's style. I agree, but... who knows with Fagen :-)

  • @sabueso32

That is exactly what I hear too!! Not Gaucho, but a great song nonetheless.

  • Wow!!!! this is great!!!! They have to release this stuff.

  • Thanks Tbob85! Maybe if enough Steely Dan fans get to hear these unbelieveable outtakes; Donald and Walter will put them together on a CD!

    fdh4000

  • While this most certainly could have been developed into a complete track, it isn't really of a piece with the rest of Gaucho and doesn't fit in with the rest of the themes they were dealing with on that album. Seems like something they would have done a few years earlier.

  • I agree with you totally, anyone know a way to find this bootleg album? I think Gaucho is my favorite album by them and have been listening to it since I was 6!

  • Thanks for the treat. All Steely Dan is great Steely Dan.

  • Supreme. I bet if all of Steely Dan members would play blind-folded and drunk in the snow, they would put out superb music. They are super disciplined and have raw, tamed talent in musicianship and creativity. I hae never heard this tune but it reminds me of their "Sun Mountain" days. I wish I could find that album again. Thanks Tbob85
