When I learned osotogari from Master Kaelin he taught us to do it like Okano sensei did. In that instead of a straight back and forth you turn into the push and use your shoulder to off balance them, the resulting throw more lateral then straight front and back. You also strike them higher in the center of balance and lead with the reaping leg instead of the bracing leg.
another variation is to tweak their balance by using your collar hand to push the neck to the side on the carotoid artery whilst pulling the sleeve slightly towards your hip (therefore going with the collar tweak) but do it almost simulateously with the leg sweep. The balance is lost at the same time as the sweep.
Begun learning this today. Was taught it this way. The shove or stretch of the upper body is a good way to make sure you get close to them and get your hips beside theirs. At least those were the points I was getting wrong and when I did it by lifting uke's arm up and pressing in to him I found I was automatically in bettter position. Still kept screwing up the sweeping leg though.
Chill my friend I was joking but you can use inanimate objects too practice with if you lack a partner my teacher a good way to work on my foot work for example was to put empty shoes too make sure I ended up in the right place you don't have to "throw" what your training with to get better but you would an person to practice with as well
It's broken one of my ribs once (the dude did it wrong and landed on my chest with his elbow) and my nose once (I did it wrong and fell on a guy with my nose hitting the top of his head).
Osoto Gari is my favorite throw (though I still only know osoto gari, o goshi, tai o toshi, ippon seio nage, darashi barai, and a couple others like san te tachi waza), but I take Jukido Jujitsu, not judo. Same idea, though.
firu, if he is in a kata situation yes, however for the throw to be succesfull in competition or real fight he should hook the leg. gaining more force and getting a higher chance of a sucessfull throw

he did it 12 hours a day???

I understand he practiced a lot, but how do you practice a move like this on something that's basically unbreakable.

I was told it was the most useful throw.
It's broken one of my ribs once (the dude did it wrong and landed on my chest with his elbow) and my nose once (I did it wrong and fell on a guy with my nose hitting the top of his head).
