I had a personal relationship with Miss Etta and her family, her Grandson was my drummer in my band, I played at her wake when she died. She told Sheldon, you know mama hasn;t much time left, so when I pass will you have that white boy play the blues at my wake, when He called me that morning I was hurt and honored to play with him and our band at her wake. RIP Miss Etta!
Great post and thanks...but just wanted to correct info section...Etta was not a flatpicker...a flatpicker is someone who uses a pick....she was a fingerstyle picker
I feel a special connection to this lady. She is from the a same area that my mom and her people are from. She also looks like many of my moms people and I enjoy playing the guitar. May God bless her and may she rest in peace up there with Rosetta Tharpe and Memphis Minnie.
I often regret that I did not at least *try* to get up to Morganton to meet her way back when. Year after year and new obligation after new obligation, time just slipped away, and so did she. Anyway, I have a few of her CD's to pop in when I need to unwind.
p.s. Elizabeth Cotten is up there with her, too. Imagine the music!
it's so beautiful ---it's so gentle, sliding lyrical pathos flowing into the body, talking to everything in the soul, keeping all that is live and waking.
Wow! Love her music!

Sad that she passed away, but I'm sure that if she WERE here, she would probably say something like 'Well, Dying is just part of life'.

Who's the moron who filmed this? The music doesn't line up with what she's actually playing in the video.
