  • what if you just soak them in salted cold water, then dried them?

  • @shell7324 Even if you just soak them in warm water for an hour or so it takes out some of the starch so I think salted may work well but you may get a salty taste to them, I am not sure.

  • I actually cook my potatoes completely. Cool, peel, slice, dice or shred and then dehydrate. They rehydrated better than than just blanched I would never eat them just sliced and dried. Yew!!.

  • @snaps81625 Thank you for the comment, they actualy arnt bad but they do taste better blanched, I have done the cook first and then dehydrate and thats great when you rehydrate but you have to be so careful so they dont fall apart when putting them in the trays. I have a batch of french fry cut potatoes in the dehydrator right now and them I blanched for 4 minutes and they were cooked through and I carefully put them on the trays and they are looking good so far. Thanks You. Joe

  • @JoeandZachSurvival I have wondered about french fries.. will you let us know how well the rehydrate when you do some. I hve heard some people have had some luck with tator tots but you have to watch carefully when rehydrating them.. Blessings!

  • love this i just got my dehydrator last weekend and i have made deer jerky and potatoes i was glad to see you diced some of yours too have you done hashbrowns that was going to be my next try also do you just store them in a jar? anyway thanks again and yes i have been ice fishing as a kid in Minn. Lake shetek ( thats may not be spelled right )

  • @armymama86 Hello, thank you for commenting. before I made the video on dehrdrating I did a whole 10 pound bag of potatoes into hashbrown type potatoes, I did them on the hand grater thing. When I did them I did blanch them and I think a person should with the hashbrown ones. You can fit 7 dehydrated potatoes into one quart jar doing them like that and when you fry them up, they are a little tough, but delicious. You should make a video on what your doing : )Thank you. Joe

  • @armymama86 Whats state do you live in? I looked up Lake Shetek, you did the spelling correct, that is in southern MN, in fact its just south of Walnut Grove, so you were fishing by the little house on the prarie lol. How did you like the venison jerky you made? I usually do all mine in the smoker but I did a batch in the dehydrator too, it was pretty good. I just store my potatoes and stuff in a jar bc if you use a food saver, the bags wont hold.

  • @armymama86 OMG I cant believe this is taking 3 to respond LOL. Ok if you go to the video I have posted from Jan 11th called venison loin something or another, and its up at the tent, you can see the jars of potatoes in that video, I brought all the dehrdrated hashbrown ones up there because since it gets so cold I cant keep canned goods up there in the winter so I am trying the dehrdrated experiment to see how they hold up going from 35 below 0 to sometimes 90 above 0. Thanks. Joe

  • Hi guys, the potatoes turn black for two reasons. When it is exposed to air, the flesh oxidizes, when this happens, there is a chemical released by the cells in the potato that tells the other cells around it to die. This is called cell apoptosis or programed cell death. This happens to ensure that no animals eat the flesh before there is a chance for the tuber to sprout a new root. In the short run it is fine, but you do not want to eat this in a large amount. It can be dangerous and toxic.

  • @mcbrett12 It an be toxic?...Man I have allot to learn :/

  • Very good info! I hated blanching too! Watch the color on the non blanch ones, mine seemed to get darker and darker!

  • @karenchakey Thanks Karen, I will keep my eye on it and see how the color is as time goes on. Thanks for the heads up. Joe

  • Cool....that's good to know, thanks for sharing Joe. (I'm finally caught up...LOL) Take Care :-))

  • @SurviveN2 I just went through all of your nice comments, Thank you very much, I see I have to get caught up on your vids as well. I hope you had a great weekend. Thanks again. Joe

  • opps, buddy salt in the water too. Which in my mind would also help twofold, seasoning and presevative. sure you guys are doing fine!

  • Thanks for the taste test!

  • Another great video Joe! This is something I have been wondering and wanted to test myself. Thanks for doing this one!

  • tht venison looks good

  • I've got to say I really love the way you test the ideas instead of just looking at the results! Great info again.. Thanks.. Aj

  • @AjPrepper Thanks Aj I always feel that I had better try it so I know because if I read about it or watch a video or even do it but then jar it and dont do the test, by the time I get around to using it I can assure you I will have no idea what my original plan was lol. If I do the whole thing, I never forget. Thanks again. Joe

  • i justt slice them and dehydrate them nothing else. seems to do me just fine. in fact thats what i do with all my foods i dehydrate just slice it and go.

  • @FixedByDoc Thanks Doc, thats my way of thinking, It seems like such an energy and time waste to go through all that crap when all your tying to do is get the water out. Thanks for the comment. Joe

  • very awesome. I am going to try it. thanks and good luck fishing

  • I've always wondered that myself....thanks for the video.

  • I've done some dehydrating but have not tried potatoes yet, if I blanche, how long?

  • @backtobasics44 When you blanch them your trying to get the starch out, thats what discolors them some recipes say 1 minute and others 5 minutes so youll have to do what feels best bc in reality when you dump the potatoes in boiling water it takes a few munutes for it to re boil. When the white foam is getting on the water thats the starch coming out. Whites seems to have less than the reds. If you cook them too long they will cook and fall apart. try 2 minutes : ) Thanks. Joe

  • PLEASE SHOW US THE PIKE! What about soaking then then drying them? when I do hash browns it seems to make them not discolor and super easy to cook up.

  • @SMprepnNancy Thats not a bad idea because when I slice or whatever the potatoes I throw them in cold water like they say so it doesnt discolor in the air and while they are soaking you see the white foam come up, and thats the starch so I am sure that helps, I am just looking for the fastest way but soaking them wouldnt make anymore work, its that boiling that gets to be a pain in the butt. thanks Nancy. Joe

  • Meals always look supergood at your house! tent! etc! Thanks for the review!

  • @TheSheChef Thanks She, Hey I watched your vid yesterday and was going to PM you but dont know how with the new YT, message me, I was wondering where your moving too etc. Thanks for the comment. Joe

  • That's actually funny. I've would have never thought about not blanching them. Now I feel as if I'm wasting time blanching and shocking.

  • @Heavyb2u Thanks Heavy, Everything about doing the potatoes was relaxing except that step, so I think eliminating it is a good thing lol. Plus look at all the electric or gtas or whatever your using to boil them. Thanks for watching. Joe

  • I was wondering what else you use your dehydrator for. Im always on the lookout for new recipes to take hiking with me. Nice Video.

  • taste is one thing nutrition is another. the question is...why do they change color? i suspect is may have something to do with oxidation. there is that word again.

  • @zehnsechz The reason they change color is bc or the starch in them, so far I think the reds have alot more than the whites bc when I do whites I dont get near the amount of starch foam in the kettle, when dehrdrated the starch discolors, and I imagine that has to do like you said with the oxidation of the starch. your quite healthy in your food storage prepping and you might think that no starch is a good thing, I dont know enough about it so for now im keeping it lol. : ) Joe

  • @JoeandZachSurvival im thinking there might be another way to deal with it, like you would with apples

  • you beat me to it!

  • Great video Joe, I wondered the same thing,, I do think that the blanched ones would cook/rehydrate faster (like cooked and dehydrated rice) since they are pretty much cooked and could be eaten unrehydrated, not sure how unblanced taste unrehydrated. but I do like blanched and thin sliced potatoes straight off the dehydrator, just like potatoe chips.

    Great video

    Take care and God Bless

    Pete

    PS Any bites?

  • @moparmanpete I got a few keeper perch but I havnt got to my favorite lakes yet because there havnt been alot of cars out there yet and my truck is rather big as far as being on the ice, I have two fishing vids edited and ready to upload that I will get to this weekend including one where I do drive out. I hope to go again this weekend. The dehydrated chips idea is awesome, I need to do that both ways and do a taste test. looks like your name will be in another of my vids. TY Joe

  • @JoeandZachSurvival Can't wait to see the fishing vids!

LOL I don't tag too many of my vids so I'll take the advertisment LOL

    Pete

  • Easier is good, especially if there's no difference in taste.

  • I've always heard it said that you eat with your eyes first.

  • @lauriegirl2 I eat when I start to get shakey and then i remember " hey, I havnt ate " lol By then I dont care what it looks like haha. Your right, everyone wants food that looks good.
