I have a shortened black and white version of this on a super 8mm reel. Was given to me by my granddad together with the projector. It makes a lot more sense with sound though! Thanks for sharing.
Good news. Antenna TV has a new show called Totally Tuned In which features classic Columbia shorts from Charles Mintz and UPA. Among them are restored Lil Abner cartoons including Sadie Hawkins Day.
When I see Mammy Yokum with her corn cob pipe and her double circular chin reminds me of a female Popeye. It's funny when her pipe sound like a steam whistle when she's angry.
@billyk5775 -- Dave Fleischer, one of the men behind Popeye and Betty Boop, is credited as producer. I don't know if he did any of the other Lil' Abner pictures, though. I'd have to say "Porkuliar Piggy" and "Kickapoo Juice" are my favorite of the series. A pity the strip's creator Al Capp hated it so much; it could've had as many episodes as "The Fox and The Crow".
When I first saw this cartoon I had been reading the Lil' Abner comics in the newspaper and realized this had been made long before Abner and Daisy Mae tied the knot.I initialy thought that Daisy had finally caught Abner on Sadie Hawkins Day.Then I saw the 1959 Lil' Abner movie, which told a different story of how they had gotten married. Then I read of when and why they had married in the original comic strip. All these different versions!!!
While watching this i was reminded of my own backwoods English dialect that was still spoken by my grandmother back in the 1960's. Hang the animation this is funny! Do you all take this man to be your hanagghghfhwngnhgnfnnhf .. two dollars please . LOL.
This was originally released in 1944; however, because of Columbia's haphazard method of preserving their theatrical cartoon library, only a black & white print survived by the '60s. This is the "re-traced" color version [probably in Korea, where the Warner Bros. black & white "Looney Tunes" library was "re-colored" in the early '70s]; believe me, the original animation was much better executed!
You're kidding! Columbia had retracings done too? (And how ironic, considering that the film orignally WAS in color).
So that means Columbia, Fleischers, and WB all had that done. (I heard Disney tried it with one old Mickey Mouse, but backed out when they saw how awful the results were.)
In Fleischers' case, I wish someone could explain why the hell Ted Turner had that done through the retrace method at the SAME TIME he was having old live-action movies digitally colored. I mean, huh?
What a sloppy production! The characters don't move with the backgrounds, the cells are poorly layered, characters disappear mid-frame, the motion is poorly synchronized, the mouth movements don't match the voices - but I still got a kick out of watching this rarity. Thanks.
Every leap year day is Sadie Hawkins Day.

This is terrific! I, too, didn't know that any Lil' Abner cartoons had ever been made. Daisy Mae was a babe!

Thanks for all the information,
I had no idea anyone had ever done any animated Lil Abner shorts,
I knew about the 1940 movie with Buster Keaton
but I had never heard about these cartoons from that era.
