  • Cling film?

  • linda, u smile is just refreshing :O

  • "the shid is hided up" WTF!!! let th pretty one talk

  • oh hay linda

  • beauty and intelligence := love it

  • awsome videos great voice but scary eyes

  • another reptilian shapeshifter lol

  • no. she's simply blind )

  • Cool lets put that on a plane and crash it into the wtc after we travel in time!

  • The helicopter thingy.. I thought you were going to say something like rescue people in natural catastrophic events or accidents, but rescuing wounded soldiers?! What a stupid example.. FY and your war bs!

  • First they are going to use it for rescuing wounded soldiers, its better to have an unmanned helicopter in a war zone than some car accident or stuff like that.

  • I believe she got excited about people landingjobs by doing their thing on UTube. I believe she wants to land it at BBC! eeeeaaaaooo british english taaaa

DOnt like how she stresses her speech! Fiiiist

  • lovely girl ... step onto my pirate ship!

  • why arent they uploading as much videos?

  • Dress like an old mafia, go outside, and let the jacket play some Godfather music.

There: You are now official remembered for life.

  • Ooh a talking jacket, thats exactly what ive always wanted!

  • huh she is fun, cute and... weird . lol

  • I saw her blink twice!!!

  • cute!!! I mean... the girl

  • Dodging inanimate objects

    FAIL

  • no, thats not a fail at all, to dodge means to avoid something suddenly...

and the helicopter is avoiding objects, not completely with sudden movements but its definatly not a fail

  • How about if I launch a baseball at it?

Hes not dodging buildings, but following a nav plan

  • but these are created on the spot and it plans the route in real time.

  • So what?

My EE AI can do that on my home computer

All this is is some cheap AI tied in to sensors on a hobby helicopter

  • Yeah, the helicopter AI is pretty straightforward to implement. The really amazing helicopter AI was one that was developed at MIT which could do really pretty sophisticated tricks midair.

  • so how did the cling wrap work? She said it was stretched across the ipod and could be stretched across the TV, but wouldnt u have to have somthing to transfer the sound waves into the cling wrap first?

  • the vid actually shows you that an electrical current from the headphone jack is sent to the cling wrap which is actually just a carbon tube that then vibrates. it's like a regular speaker but it does not need a magnet for the resonence.

  • hey gunnar ur an idiot

  • Oh great! But! How in the world am I supposed to be able to escape that helicopter in the future when its chasing me in the forest and wants to kill me? I'll need a weapon for that. But then ofcourse, the satellites will pick me up and I'll be caught and executed.

  • Maybe you should go out now and suspend some 5mm steel cables in the forest, just to be on the safe side.

  • hehe of course.

  • Yeah fo show she is pretty hot

  • Cool

  • I just wan that nanotube!!!

  • lol i wanted to watch a rammstein clip and it came here i was like wtf.

  • Lol...

  • linda geddes is the presenter and she is HOT.

  • Shes hot!

  • Please can we keep her ... for our roudup of the weeks please... shes just so hot!

  • This beautiful lady presenting is just gorgeous. I think im in love. Thankyou you cute thing you.

  • About the 3D aurora thing, I don't think it's possible to capture the aurora in its full glory on film. You have to see it with your own eyes. In 2001 at the peak of the last solar cycle, it reached down to the latitude where I live and it was the most spectacular thing I've ever seen to see it reflected off the still water on the lake. I stayed up all night to watch it. You can't artificially duplicate that sight unless you had some space age hologram or something.

  • The future is so unpredictable, who would have known that you can have a thin film tapes into your wall that acts like a speaker?

  • I never expect that, wow...

  • cool show

  • not sure about the nanotube speaker. might sound like laptop speaker after all

  • Such an infectiously pleasant personality!

  • Wohoo no more dolby suround and digital Im gona use it on walls so I get super ultra 3D sound :D

  • hahaha :P :D

  • I think those ideas are beyonf my imaginnation

  • How does stretching the treated sheet across the screen of a TV improve quality of sound? The screen doesn't produce sound.

  • the sheet would make the sound making no need for speakers....

  • i think it would replace the need for speakers. You would simply displace the audio source across the entire screen rather than having the audio emanate from specific locations on the tv. that way, you can have the ultra thing 3 mm OLED screens without the need for bulkier speakers.

  • Linda I love u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • oh my god, this singing jacket technology must NEVER reach the market, those damn kids with their cell phones playing shitty music in trains are annoying enough already

  • I agree, i usually get back at them by cranking up the volume on my own phone and blast AC/DC "Highway to hell" off!!!

They usually turn their volume down after that ;)

  • meh, i prefer giving them the most evil eye ever and putting my headphones on and block them out that way.

there are other people on the train too and not everyone likes the same stuff. Forcing someone to listen to music they dont like should be a crime, although listening to christina aguilera should be a crime in any case.

  • singing jacket, do want

  • The carbon-nanotube speaker is an interesting idea... Completely different concept from conventional speakers.

  • you dont, so get used to it ;)

  • not called alex named alex

  • Alex the parrot?

  • you know what's refreshing, it's you, linda ;)

btw i agree with one comment made by someone earlier that newscientist should include links of the article in the video description on the right side

  • hi linda,

u know, im still single LOL hahaha

  • lovely new presenter, and really interesting contents

  • they sould employ HTMs for the helicopters.

  • Shes so hot! Intelligence is sexy :)

  • honestly, what can't we do with nanotubes? it's definitely gonna turn lead into gold...

  • Best video for a long time... :)

  • soon we will have singing condoms LOL

  • LOL

  • OMG, I WANT IT!

  • For her pleasure?

  • All of these things matter alot.

  • i wanna one of those music jackets!!!

  • Suggestion for New Scientist:

You should include a link to your website and the articles mentioned in the video in the side bar description.

  • Why are there not more intelligent, science-obsessed and smexy women where I am?

Am I wrong to enjoy the informative reports of these lovely ladies and have just a little wish that there were women like this in many parts of the world?

    I am such a nerd... :P

Honestly though, I want to know why many women are not scientists! I think there is something wrong with society, shooing women away from the greatest field of knowledge...

Also, I want a carbon nano-tube to give off music! ^_^

  • On the Horizon are Sexy Life like fully functioning Female Robots .. Then every man can be in the company of such a beautiful woman like the one in this video.

  • "find" (if you're smart enough...I don't need to tell you how...I hope...) the -book (...does someone intentionally deleted an "e" before that word... ? ) Michael Angelo's DOUBLE YOUR DATING.

Hope that helps your chemical brain needs for women's pheromones ;-)

  • How about folks marking 'first comment' comments as spam? then we can get rid of these time wasters.

  • they're only really wasting their own time though...

  • Well, they do that for sure, but they also waste our time too and it adds up. 924 views so far,

1 second each ... that's already 15 minutes wasted. But it happens a lot more than just this one video.

  • cool

  • coo vid i loked the helicopter thingy :P

  • Cool. But, when you talk about robot helicopters potentially rescuing wounded soldiers....I think we should be thinking about robot SOLDIERS instead ;) How about LIVE PEOPLE rescuing wounded robots? Sounds a bit more comfortable...
