I was only vaguely aware of Monique before I watched Precious. Halfway through it I had to stop the movie and look up who the hell was delivering this mindblowing performance... I was shocked to realize it was her, the comedienne! Hers is easily the most real acting performance I've seen in many years. I am SO glad she got the academy award. And Precious is amazing.

It's obvious that she was on a cut break to talk about her character. So technically, she's still in character which is why you may have noticed the discolored teeth...

Far as the bush under her arm pits, that is a reality physical thing she got going on...lol thats no secret. The whole world knows that she does not shave under her arms nor anywhere else for that matter XD but I was speaking on the teeth alone. Mo's teeth are never caught yellow in the public's eye.

She was very convincing. Throwing the down syndrome baby and trying to throw the TV and kill precious, she actually made me hate for a while lol. And i'm still reluctant towards the oscars because many notable black actors/actresses have yet to win an award.

While I hold no personal resentment towards Monique or her role, there are not enough positve portryals of African Americans on the "big screen" to balance the negative images.

Is "Precious" real..absolutely! I am a middle school Principal and see Precious every day, but I grow tired of seeing these films as great "triumphs" for us.

Oh yeah...and I forgot..."3-6 Mafia" won an Oscar for "It's Hard Out Hear for A Pimp"...

@olskool: You're right. We win for being what they THINK we are. Many people of different races believe Precious' story to be the way the AVERAGE BP lives. When the reality is, the author herself states she didn't grow up around ANYONE like Precious and that she didn't even KNOW anybody like Precious. She created a character and heaped every bad thing she had ever HEARD about in the ghetto, on one person. But because the character fits OUTSIDERS ideas about who we are, an Oscar is inevitable.
