There are mothers in India that SELL their own daughters to the sex slavery.Selling their shit for a DOLLER!! There are a lot of fucked up shit in this world. I would be shocked to find one person on this planet that hasn't been molested.
I was only vaguely aware of Monique before I watched Precious. Halfway through it I had to stop the movie and look up who the hell was delivering this mindblowing performance... I was shocked to realize it was her, the comedienne! Hers is easily the most real acting performance I've seen in many years. I am SO glad she got the academy award. And Precious is amazing.
great movie, but had no sympathy for mary at the end whatsoever. She got what she deserved personally, it was her fault she didnt take a hold of her life to start with. Great actress who plays her though.
i was just wondering ...anyone notice her teeth were/are yellow just a few on the bottom and top??? and the big bush under her arms yipes!......and i have to agree ..she won?? 2 babies by her daddy , hiv positive, uneducated and unemployed? who won again?
It's obvious that she was on a cut break to talk about her character. So technically, she's still in character which is why you may have noticed the discolored teeth...
@SDLFJOIDF oh ..Iam sorry I missed the obvious....:) I guess it should be obvious that the bush of hair under her arm pits in the movie is also her ''still'' in character when she has admitted her man likes her hairy legs and everything else hairy....gross! thank you for your comment ...but , I have grown to dislike Monique since I posted my comments on here...
Far as the bush under her arm pits, that is a reality physical thing she got going on...lol thats no secret. The whole world knows that she does not shave under her arms nor anywhere else for that matter XD but I was speaking on the teeth alone. Mo's teeth are never caught yellow in the public's eye.
@SDLFJOIDF ya ...she does have some pearly whites :) but she can keep the cave woman all natruel look with the hairy legs and pits and God knows what else...but hey, to each it's own :)
She was very convincing. Throwing the down syndrome baby and trying to throw the TV and kill precious, she actually made me hate for a while lol. And i'm still reluctant towards the oscars because many notable black actors/actresses have yet to win an award.
While I hold no personal resentment towards Monique or her role, there are not enough positve portryals of African Americans on the "big screen" to balance the negative images.
Is "Precious" real..absolutely! I am a middle school Principal and see Precious every day, but I grow tired of seeing these films as great "triumphs" for us.
Oh yeah...and I forgot..."3-6 Mafia" won an Oscar for "It's Hard Out Hear for A Pimp"...
i disagree, you have black actors in major movies, tv shows, doctors lawyers, superheros - this movie is important, it shows us kids there is a place to go, there are alternatives and most of all there are ppl there who are kind and can love you - thats real.

yeah just like charlize theron winning an oscar for playing a prostitute in 'monster'...most people win after they play a role that is out of the ordinary
@olskool: You're right. We win for being what they THINK we are. Many people of different races believe Precious' story to be the way the AVERAGE BP lives. When the reality is, the author herself states she didn't grow up around ANYONE like Precious and that she didn't even KNOW anybody like Precious. She created a character and heaped every bad thing she had ever HEARD about in the ghetto, on one person. But because the character fits OUTSIDERS ideas about who we are, an Oscar is inevitable.
listen all i can say is that the girl who plays precious should get an oscar for her performance as well as mo nique i havent seen the movie but i feel that just looking at the trailer the performances indiscribable this girl never acted before she never thought of acting she as told their was an aoudition going on and she went for it it was so dificut some days that mo nique and precious had to hold each other after a take and just cry because thats not her
I felt confident and scared that I hated mary so much. I actually cared about mary. She needs to change her ways in this movie because she was mean to clarice. It's scary to think that other people are living this right now somewhere in the world.
One thing that really jumped out to me is when MoNique said what was it that was done wrong to Mary that made her so cold, cruel and vicious and thst she will be this untill she dies. She really dug deep for this role.

My point is this...
Where are the Oscars for the black love stories, romantic comedies. These roles are ok as long as there is balance.
Can Halle Berry (or Billy Bob Thornton)show her children "Monster's Ball"?
olskoolrich 2 years ago
@olskoolrich
A romantic comedy will never win an oscar .. black OR white.

Jennifer Hudson's role in Dreamgirls was not exactly a positive role for black women either.
...All I'm saying that why must the most negative images of African-Americans receive the most accolades?

I'm sure Monique will win the Oscar because the only time we are allowed to win is for demeaning, derogatory, stereotypical roles....
Denzel..."Training Day"- crooked cop "Glory"- a slave
Halle..."Monsters' Ball"- Single mother, who was on all fours with a white man screwing her.
Only good wins
Whoopi- "Ghost"
Lou Gosset- "An officer and a gentleman"

Jennifer Hudson best supporting actress for dreamgirls.
There are many others that had golden globes or oscars and not due to the fact they played horrible strickened characters!
