the castanets in the verses are great, but then comes the lyric... black insects crawl on yellow walls, they seem to move, but they don't move to any place at all ...perfect image of stinking hot perth summers of my youth. from time when massive air conditioners - now produced very cheaply in s.e.asian labour market - weren't all over every house. triffids were quite ambitious from outset in tems of sound & lyrics, but too often local sound producers seemingly weren't up to ideas
In my memory, this is categorised as one of their lesser singles. But I just stumbled on this just now, and it hits the spot. In reality they made very few poor songs, it has to be said.
The Triffids and Friends Play the Songs of David McComb - a gig coming to the Arts Centre, Hamer Hall, Melbourne, 29 January 09. Its a tribute to the fine talents of David McComb from Rob and the rest of the band (Jill Birt, Martyn P Casey, Graham Lee, Alsy MacDonald). It'll include some of the original band slides and bits of Dave's poetry. Wish I had friends like Steve Kilbey, Rob Snarski, Mick Harvey, Toby Martin, Ricki Maymi, Mark C Halstead and Melanie Oxley! Ticketmaster for tix.
Thanks so much for posting this, tears in my eye. Forgot about this great song til the recent (brilliant) Triffids sans Dave gig in Sydney, where I was surprised to remember every lyric. Used to have it on a long-ago destroyed tape from about 1983. First saw Triffids at an underage gig when I was 15 at the Tivoli in 1983 around the time of 'Red Pony' release. Saw them many more times after, but hadn't listened for years until the recent reuniting. They still sound amazing. Very special.
I know what you mean, I had tears in my eyes as well when I saw them at the reunion concerts in Hasselt, Belgium in 2006. I was fortunate to talk to Graham, Jill, Martyn and Alsy after the shows. Oh Yes, I will treasure those moments for ever.
Wow! I have never heard any pre-"Treeless Plain" Triffids. It took me a long time to get this band. Now, along with the Go Betweens, they are one of the few who bring tears to my eyes.
There's a great deal of pre-Treeless Plain Triffids to be found, most of it very good. Seven album-length cassettes, two singles and two EPs. Much of this material has been posted on various music blogs, so you can find them fairly easily, Suggestion: start googling with 'Dungeon Tape.'
they were great live in those early days playing in the small pubs and the dungeon tape was a cherished possession of mine for a long time...they had so many great songs as they matured as a band but those old songs sure were good...remember the "Teeny Weenys" great band! the girl singer,Jill Yates I think ended up on keyboard for a while..where is she now?

Anybody know where they filmed this. I have a feeling some of the coastal stuff was filmed on Rottnest or Fremantle. Anyone have more of a clue?

What's the name of the pub on the corner of Devonshire street and Elizabeth street in Surry Hills? That's where I first saw them
HeadlandRoad 4 years ago
Strawberry Hills Hotel?

That's the one. Thanks.

However, it was called the Southern Cross in 1982. The pub changed its name to the Strawberry Hills in '84, I think.

This would be the Vulcan Hotel, where they played until they got the residency at the Southern Cross.

She was in the band when I first saw them. I believe she works in fashion now.
