No they don't have to chum the water aparently this group of sharks lives and breads in the area. Chumming the water would be a bad idea cause it would make the sharks more agitated and looking for food.
The divemaster mentioned that he's seen up to 25 in a single dive. The dive operation I went with doesn't feed the sharks but apparently there's another local group that feeds them regularly. He also mentioned that the sharks weren't as active when we dove as they normally would be. This being my first real shark dive, and having just watched a documentary about how aggressive bull sharks can be, i was perfectly fine with their lethargic behaviour...
The bulls visit playa from december to march.
Go with a small renegade dive shop if you want to really dive with the bulls!
Because the harbor master doesn't allow dive shop to chum for sharks.
I'm friends with oldest local dive shop operator, and he actually brings a hand sized spear gun on our secret shark dives.
He simply just zaps a squirrel fish or a jack, then they show up within a minute the blood hits the water.
Favor the locally owned dive shops, over the euro's or the canadians!
