It seems that this game was released in 1985! The "(C) Sega 1983" threw me off - the copyright is from that year, but this version of the game was apparently made in 1985. That really explains why it looks so advanced. The other version was released in 1983, and it only has two levels (just as I remembered). Now everything makes sense again, ahh.
These really didn't look like 1983 graphics - but they are relatively superb even for 1985 (the year of Boulder Dash etc.)
This looks way different than the version I played. And here is the version I played in my childhood: watch?v=UKqjqb8YExM&feature=related
I knew I couldn't remember that wrong. The version I played seems more in tune with the graphical quality at the time. This version looks like somehow improved modern remix or something. I know it's not, but it just looks way too advanced for a 1983 game - the loading picture included (what a great pic!).
funny thing happens when i play congo bongo - these nuts are CRAZY! hey! fellas! let's not get carried away, OH NO! maybe i'll take a walk, then again maybe i'll take a swim! hey, lady! this is a ONE-WAY street! hey that's the guy i've been lookin' for. congo bongo good for hours of laughs.
@roblox184: I have never seen lily pads in Donkey Kong though.. Or waterfalls.. Or fish, snakes, hippos, skulls.. But Kongo Bongo was definitly based on the famous arcade-classic; actually Sega's answer to Donkey Kong.
This is a remade version for c64. The original c64 conversion from the arcade game was released in 1983.
I was surprised to see that there were more than 2 levels after replaying the first and second levels. I wonder if this would had been true for the other c64 version as well.
@einokeino303 I think the other version has only two levels, at least that's how I remember it, and that's why I thought "Congo Bongo looks good and would be an interesting game, but it's just so short, there's not enough content for me" - so I had to abandon it with teary eyes. Too bad.. I would so have loved for it to have had more content and maybe a more involved gameplay (you can practically just cruise through the first level).

Impressive for 1983. Very good conversion of a rather poor game.
