Speed at 300 rpm which is the top rpm for this lathe, I don't remember what feed I had set, but I didn't have much to take off so I took 40 thou on the first cut to see what kind of finish I'd get with the feed I had set...

This shaft is the guide that goes in the center of the shock mounted on top of the mast. Rig is a speedstar 55.

No lube, it's just the oil on the raw finish of the round stock. Some round stock has a protective coating of oil put on it to keep it from rusting.

I thought the smoke was from a lack of lube.
