  • This is SO FREAKIN' AWESOME!!! I remember listening to this album with my brother on his record player when I was a kid when I first started playing guitar. What a huge influence on my playing by going outside of the norm and experimenting with sounds. Adrian is a genius. Big Electric cat, Stop it, The Mormur....incredible stuff.

  • yeah, well, my big electric cat ,just recently dine on the corners off my record album covers!!

  • I shook Adrian's hand in the bathroom at Alexanders in Cincinnati. We hadn't even washed our hands yet. I think that makes us closer than most people. A urinatic bond so to speak. Instead of blood brothers it's like we're pee brothers. That's very, Rock-n-Roll.

  • man I haven't heard this in forever

  • Great song!

  • can someone please post oh daddy!i,ve seen it before and always keep looking, they must be flagging it?

  • weird to see this again after soo long.. I had this song in my head today - but to see the twin towers fall, I had forgotten that. It gave me a chill.

  • I guess some people in the eighties didn't just say "no".

  • Great shot of the Twin Towers at the beginning.

  • I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed this song!

THank you so much for posting this!

  • Very cool sounding.

  • So proud he signed my guitar a couple of years ago. Belew rules.

  • Heres Another great piece from Ade that I uploaded. Shit is epic XD.

  • Since this tune never gets any airplay, it makes it that much better each time I give it a listen. Desire of the Rhino King is full of interesting sounds. Watch out for those sexy Rhino's. lol.

  • love the video, but why did Def-Jam go any copyright it? YT is getting to be a drag. When a viewer can download a video and put it on an iPod or a disk, then they can watch it anytime, and (listen up, corporations!) will be more likely to BUY THE CD and GO TO A CONCERT. videos are promotional items. let the public have them, and your sales will rise. In the meantime, I am boycotting any label that copyrights its material on YT. Greed, my friends, will LOSE CUSTOMERS AND LOSE MONEY!

  • Are you implying that videos shown on Youtube should be viewed as free publicity/marketing? I personally agree. But, you will have trouble convincing those with monetary interests at stake. And, Unfortunately they are the ones that control all that we see and hear. 9 times out of 10 their monetary interest trumps our demand. And, again; We take it like a chump.

  • Yes, I am saying that. No implications - flat-out stating it. I am not even going to bother with corporate people who have dollar signs in their eyes instead of pupils. Some people fight back by creating software that cracks the copyright - wish I knew how! in order to watch at our leisure, not the corporations's.

  • I remember my mind boggling while watching this...it seemed to be beyond my capabilities to take all of it in.

Now, I wonder...Is The Cat Gary Seven's Isis, from Star Trek?

  • Wow! I was in high school in 82 and I was blown away by this track....and still am!

    This song is timeless.

Simply unbelievable guitar work...perhaps what Hendrix would have put out if he were around in the 80's....or he'd be a HUGE Belew fan!

  • I remember the videographers of this video on USA's Night Flight talking about the (now cheesy) video effects of this video. Cripes! I'm old! ;-)

  • This song, "The Mumur" and "Three of a Perfect Pair" are the best things A.B. has ever done.

  • The first time I heard this tune (long before video) my face melted.

  • Can someone please tell me how to get those sounds from a guitar???

    He's unbelievable. What a musician!!!

  • an e-bow and a chorus pedal are good starts!

  • even with the same gear you'd be hard pressed to duplicate the sounds he gets; the guy is a mutant.

But the gear used to get the cat sounds on this track is a Fender Musicmaster with the frets ripped out, run through a Foxx Tone Machine- which is a combo of octave pedal and a really, REALLY nasty, ring-y fuzz box...he's also using delay and no doubt a very nice tube amp.

You can hear the Foxx Tone Machine of the Studio version of "Star Spangled Banner" on Hendrix 's "Rainbow Bridge" LP too.

  • Throwing it out there that the Danelectro French Toast is a REALLY good copy of the Foxx Tone Machine.

  • yeah but why not just buy a Foxx Tone Machine?

  • Big electric cat!

  • sounds computerish

  • The backwards tape loops of the drumming is still amazing.

  • OMG. Seeing this, I remember first seeing it on that late-night video show with the original Max Headroom. I think it was "Nightflight." Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • Has been a while (years) since I've seen this.

  • DAMN!!! I've have not herd the in a long time!! ThanX sssssssssoooooooooooo much for posting!!

  • one of the best songs he ever did

  • Far 0ut , where's the 'skleeners.

My Brother-in-law turned me on to A.B. in 92'. Thanks Paul !

  • Ad is the SHIT!!!

  • Does anybody have a video post or link for Adrian's "The Mumur" -- Gawd, i love that song!

  • I think it's here on youtube, not sure.

  • so funny in the both means of the word

  • this is crazy!!!

  • Adrian played a free show a few weeks ago in the theater at Sweetwater Sound. He is as good as he's ever been. His final comment to the audience was something to the effect of, "I can't wait to see what the future holds."

  • The first time i saw this video was on MTV. Can you believe it?

  • Where can i find a higher quality version of this ? Looks too pixelated here

  • Watch this daily

  • I was born in the 60's, and when I looked back from the 80's the 60's seemed like a whole long time ago.

Today I asked a guy born in the 80's what he thinks whe he looks back at his birth decade, and he said "The 80's seem like the future."

  • Palette of Perspectives...

  • Popular music and fashions of the 80's were of the future!! We are still struggling to go forward again in these areas.

  • We could have made some great strides during that time if Whitey had not kept us down.

  • HAHA!! Don't worry Whitey keeps white people down too.

  • This is pretty good, but I prefer his new stuff (sides one through four).

  • That's a fretless base you're hearing. I have the album in vinyl. (and a whole lotta Zappa in vinyl that I wish I could transfer to CD but I don't know how.)

  • They actually have turntables now that have USB outputs to do that.

  • this is EPIC.

  • amazing fucking tone.

  • thats crazyyyyyy lol

it looks what some1 was having an acid trip while making this music video... xD

  • I keep watching this over and over, and the song was in my head at the supermarket and on the way home today.

  • So cool to have kids listenin to their parents music. Makes me want to drop acid again.

  • To ME...the most endearing thing of this video is the respect and showing of the TWIN TOWERS...New York's two front teeth..I lost a LOT of co-workers and friends there...AWESOME TUNE!!! WAY BEHIND IT'S TIME!!!

  • dicovered by frank zappa in some little club somewhere...the guy shreds on guitar!!

  • hamrite, you coulndn't possibly call discipline lame. Belew was a breath of fresh air to King Crimson

  • One of the best sleeper albums ever.

    Belew is a freaking genius.

  • I love Adrian's solo stuff. Twang Bar King and Lone Rhino are two of my favorite albums.

  • I met Belew this month and he told me this song was recorded with a fretless guitar!

  • Wow...I haven't seen this video since 1983.

25 years, man....where did they go.....

  • Belew use to live down the street from me in Illinois

  • And you had NO idea mate? Or DID you !!! Ha!

  • I LOVED this song when it came out!!! My brother had the album and when he went out for the evening I would sneak in his room and play the grooves off of it

  • That's hilarious, Irish. LOL I did the same thing! My older brother would kill me if I even LOOKED at his albums. He would go out and I would play the hell out of his albums and 8 Tracks. LOL

  • I bought this album when it came out (Master copy on virgin vinyl!) I still have it. NOBODY ever was allowed to touch it except for my Kenwood Marbletop which I also still have.

  • Bought this album in Paris in the 80's after hearing his collaboration with Talking Heads.

He felt like oxygen after the King Crimson lame stuff from the same period. This guys good.

  • meow meow ¬¬

  • This song was a feature in the movie 'Get Crazy'. That movie is perhaps the best unknown rock and roll film from the 1980s. It stars Malcom McDowell, Lou Reed, Ed Begley Jr, and Lee Ving to name a few.

  • I grew up in Kansas City MO in the 60's. There was a drugstore called Katz and they had a sign of a huge and ghastly grinning black cat head lined in neon. I always thought this song had to be about that sign.

  • Try to imagine the size of that cat box.

    Lawsy Me!!!

  • This one goes straight to my pleasure centers.

  • I have to remember this one :)

  • Yeah, the video looks crude by today's standards, but believe it or not...I was a media studies student at the New School in '82 when, in a video production course the instructor showed us this as an example of what you could do with the latest, cutting-edge video editing tools!

It wasn't until years later that I realized the music was by Adrian Belew...an incredibly talented guy!

  • thanks for posting! memories here...if you like this check out>lone rhino>&>twang bar king>two really great lps>:))

  • Just saw Adrian do this song last night as an encore after a two hour show. The man's still got it in SPADES! The arrangement he plays these days is a bit faster and a LOT more energetic. Check it out LIVE on his new CD, SIDE FOUR, recorded just last year. GREAT STUFF!

  • sexy big electric kitty, i want you!

  • Hard to believe there was a video for this. Crude but endearing.

  • Oh my Gawd!! THANK YOU for posting this video! I saw it back in the 80's on a late night video show when I was a kid but I never knew who performed it. I've been wondering about it for over 20 years and I just googled "big electric cat" on a whim and found this page. It has long been one of those songs that get stuck in my head. Hahaha!

  • yo giantrobokc-

also check out king missile 'detachable penis' video. that will also ring a bell

  • King Crimson

  • Whoa... that is a big electric cat!

  • she use , or the band use the poly chorus/

  • Big Eletric Guitar

  • come on Belew kick so ass gp473

  • genial!

  • that chick is hot,!....

  • absolutely awesome!! total CATbumps!! thanks for posting!

  • And the royalties were to the Electric Cat's Saviour World's Fund. lead by the feline model, I guess... The best song for my cat on monday's breakfast!

  • whoa haha that video was some trippy shit. im not even sure if i really was that interested in the song

  • If you play Big Electric Cat backwards you will hear it says, "Thank You Come Again". Since this was the first song on the album it would be last played in reverse. Don't believe me? Try it for yourself.

  • If you listen to the second song on the album backwards, he says...why are you playing my songs backwards, are you satan worshippers? Hahahaha

  • This is such a great album. My ex turned me on to Adrian Belew. About the only good thing that came out of that marriage. :-)

  • fazinating prototyp of industrial rock and metal music

  • At about 0:40 in, the video shows 5 guys gawking at the girl. Does anyone recognize the 4th guy? An actor I think, but I can't remember his name for the life of me.

  • Thank yus for posting! I saw this video for the first time back in 1983 and it completely blew me away. Stunning song, immense guitar work... and awesome big electric cat's eye girl!

  • Awesome video. Just looking at the graphics in the 2 half takes you to another place, it is fab.

    Thanks for posting.

  • I was a kid when I first heard this and thought it was the coolest song ever..Its nice to see it here again after all this time.

  • There was also a video for 'Swing Line'. I saw it on Showtime during the dead time between the end of a movie and the top of the next hour once.

It was like a line drawn cartoon, white on a black background. There were these really cool visual bursts with the snare drum beats.

  • Obviously you cant't handle it yourself so why don't you then go and ask the nurse to change your diaper. We can't help you here.

  • Adrian Belew is a great artist who played with The Talking Heads,Frank Zappa and other great musicians. Including a stint in King Crimson! His band ,The Bears, met with critical approval as well.

  • Actually, there was no "stint" with King Crimson. Belew is STILL with King Crimson( for over two decades now), and is beginning a tour with them in July!

  • seems like I can remember seeing this video on the USA Night Flight show... anyone else recall that??

  • I thought I was the only one.

  • Nope! Where did the 80's go to :( ?! I guess some things are better left alone as far as this video goes -_-...

  • I don't even need to do LSD or anything else to appreciate this video..it's spacey and trip inviting music...I just had a few cocktails and I'm flying with this song!!! I have a big electric cat named BUDDY..he's huge!!! I dedicate this song to him..BUDDY my BIG ELECTRIC CAT!!!

  • Hey davylou....I saw that/this too on USA Night Flight Show...oh god, are we THAT old? Yep, I guess so!!! Enjoy hun..I will...

  • woah...same here.

  • oh dear god that was so long ago. now i feel old. didn't adrian belew have a song that actually made a mark on the charts?

  • did a little more surfing and found the soung i was thinking about: "oh, daddy". i knew i remembered him from MTV.

  • yea had his daughter on it...cool tune...

  • You more likely saw Adrian on MTV with David Bowie or Talking Heads. He appeared on several videos with them.

  • LOL Adrian did a song called "Oh Daddy" that made a mark on the charts... Ironically, it was a song about his daughter begging him to write a "big hit." Adrian still considers it his darkest hour: flirting with the pop music industry.

  • Not solo, but he played guitar and cowrote the tom tom club song genius of love, which, although it barely charted in england, still gets a lot of radio play and is one of the most sampled songs of all time.

  • oh yea,,,nightflight,,watched all the time..man they had some good bands back then..

seen a great zappa show on there...

  • This was IT in 1982 as far as video goes. I absolutely loved Night Flight. Thanks for the flashback!

  • I had the biggest crush on this girl wen I was 18 years old. She still does it for me. As allways Adrian totally rocks.

  • still a fantastic track.......

  • great song

  • I saw Belew w/Bowie on the Sound & Vision tour, years ago, and also playing with Fripp w/the revised King Crimson (where he played "Big Electric Cat" as an audience request).

  • i saw the bears live in richmond va too rizd....and i was definately fuked up dont remember this vid either

  • Frank Zappa seen talent!! All Franks bands were crack ass musicians..Belew was one of many guys , like Steve Vai, that Frank gave a big break to.. Belew is a felow Covinton , Ky native like myself. He can flat play a geetar..,.

  • ....looks dated now.ahead of its time then, great song still.

  • You wouldn't happen to know how I could get the music video to "I See You" from the Here album. I remember seeing it online a while ago but, I don't remember how I accessed it.

  • Most innovative, great work with Frank Zappa aswell.

  • Killer effects. Especially for the 80's. Well done.

  • Carlos Alomar, Chuck Hammer, Robert Fripp, Pete Townshend and Tony Visconti were the guitarists on Scary Monsters - no mention of Mr Belew !

  • awesome...haven't heard this for years...saw adrian backing up bowie on the sound and vision tour

  • Wow, I can't believe I never saw this video-I was a A.B fan in the '80s-King Crimson, solo, saw The Bears live...or maybe I was just fucked up and forgot.

  • Back in the 80's this video was ahead of it's time . The video and the music had such a fresh taste to it. I love it !

  • Belew es el mejor guitarrista del mundo!!

  • this song is great total 80s digital guitar tone.the rest of the album is also great thanx for posting.

  • wow, this is in stereo, my 1st "youtube" stereo experience... i love Belew but not a favourite composition, he can do much better... still gets 5 stars :)

  • my 6 and 9 yr old love this song

  • I seen that babe in Manhattan... and the cat : )

  • Rather listen to this than the current rap crap

  • comments like "adrian belew was ahead of his time" is about as redundant and saying "robert fripp was ahead of his time".. this video melted my face..

  • The girl has sexy eyes and the guys are tough and mean looking.I have liked this song since elementary school.Thank you for posting.

  • I think I was in 5th grade when I heard this.MTV stopped me from listening to disco.I am glad.I wish music and talent were the criteria nowadays.I will finish my sandwich now....

  • Enjoy every sandwich.

  • Enjoy every big electric sandwich.

  • This is the good stuff

  • Old school Mtv

  • When I was in college, I played this one at the pool at my apartment and everyone left! I laughed like hell...This is def. an acquired taste.

  • Must have been in the 80s...

This is definitely something that would go down very well today...

Adrian Belew was definitely ahead of his time

  • This is great. I hadn't seen this since I first saw it, baked out of my mind in college. Pretty dang good even with the primitive computer graphics they had in those days. And Belew is just a master-- his work on King Crimson's _Discipline_ and Bowie's _Scary Monsters_ is not to be missed.

  • Wasn't Scary Monsters Fripp?

  • Carlos Alomar, Chuck Hammer, Robert Fripp, Pete Townshend and Tony Visconti were the guitarists on Scary Monsters - no mention of Mr Belew !

  • ahhhh, the 80's and what we're able to remember of that wonderful blur of a decade.... but ya just can't go back!
