Yeah customs is quite a pain when you cross borders there. The author said this city was quite drab, of course it was. It's winter time. I was there in June and I found it very beautiful. Clean streets and the city center was busseling all the flowers were in full bloom. It was not disappointing at all.
I love this city, I lived there for 6 months as an international student, It is not a big city but you gotto walk everywhere if you really want to know the place, go to the famous camp where the biggest tank battle took place during WWII
I wonder how well the Ukrainian-Russian border is enforced? After the fall of the CCCP it must be a little more complicated going back and forth from Kharkiv to Belgorod and vice versa

My Sony Cybershot - used for all films here but one - has given up on me. I do not want to buy a video camera - just a compact camera which I can carry around in my pocket.
Unfortunately I cannot answer that question as I did not go into the rural areas due to a lack of transport and a lack of heat, but it is very close to the Ukrainian border although most of the population over the border are ethnic Russian rather than ethnic Ukrainian!
Lovely. Most holiday pictures and travel docs single out a few pretty details and highlights, but this gives you a feel for the surroundings and what it's like to walk in the streets. And I'm all for cute female Santas in baby blue. ;-)

That is about one hour out of the city - Prokorovka - Battle of Kursk.

It is neccessary to have 40-minutes customs control on Russian side of border and same on the Ukrainian side. Quite long.

And many people in rural areas speak a mixture of Ukranian and Russian, especially close to the border.
