Pre smelled up the track in the last 200 (hunit) meters. He looked lost and not digging into his typical Pre sprint kick your ass and win type of race. Pre was thinking about the "RATS ASS" during the 5,000 final. You can see it, I'm telling you when he was on the 3rd turn with 150 (hunit and fity) meters to go, his head was in his ass. Then when he pulled it out, it was too late because Gammoudi and Viren were saying," bye bye". Then, to add to his torment, Ian Stewart blows by him too.

Pre worked harder than anybody pushing the pace from the very beginning. No body won a race easily with Pre in the line-up. Pre made sure you were going to have to run you guts out to beat him. Pre was awesome and an inspiration to millions. Pre ran his heart out every race he ran and this is one of the reasons he's so loved. Sure Pre could've won more races if he didn't run flat out from start to finish but a race to Pre was giving it his all not seeing who was the best tactician.
There were several moves by Pre that drained out his energy. He made these moves because he wanted to WIN. Look especially at his move on the last lap on the back stretch. He could have easily cruised to a 3rd place finish.(He could have hung on during the backstretch and used his kick on the final stretch and could have avoided Stewart).However, his drive to win is what actually screwed him over.
Also, he was only 21 in this race; easily the youngest. His chances to win in montreal were great.

While some of the Fins ( and other athletes) were proven to have used doping of some sorts, Viren was not one of them. There was never any proof, and he was offered a million dollars at one time to tell "the truth". Viren denied adamantly that he used any type of doping at all, and the offer was reneged. As with most great performances, the accusations were from either bitter people, or sore losers.

I don't think there was any way that Viren was going to be beat in Montreal. He was too strong, and became extremely fast in the final stages of the race. He was racing extremely well at the shorter distances, and was able to put a finishing kick together when it counted. Watch the final 600m.. Viren is able to match the surges with less effort, and knows it- he covered their moves, and only really put it down at the last turn... amazing. Steve Prefontaine had no chance.
Awesome! Funny how this video is made so electrifying by two men who weren't in the medals: the commentator ("He's a sort of an athletic Beatle in the States") and the athletic Beatle himself, driving for home from a mile out. I can see why people worship him.

Pre smelled up the track in the last 200 (hunit) meters. He looked lost and not digging into his typical Pre sprint kick your ass and win type of race. Pre was thinking about the "RATS ASS" during the 5,000 final. You can see it, I'm telling you when he was on the 3rd turn with 150 (hunit and fity) meters to go, his head was in his ass. Then when he pulled it out, it was too late because Gammoudi and Viren were saying," bye bye". Then, to add to his torment, Ian Stewart blows by him too.

In this race Pre ran 2 seconds behind Viren. It has been shown Pre actually ran a 5K + 40 extra meters by running in outside lanes. Prefontaine was the 1st runner to reach the 5K mark as Viren ran on the inside lanes. Even though Viren took home the medal, Pre was a faster/greater runner!

Pre worked harder than anybody pushing the pace from the very beginning. No body won a race easily with Pre in the line-up. Pre made sure you were going to have to run you guts out to beat him. He was so young and there's no telling what Pre could have achieved had he not dead at just 24...Early / Mid 30's is prime for most males.

There were several moves by Pre that drained out his energy. He made these moves because he wanted to WIN. Look especially at his move on the last lap on the back stretch. He could have easily cruised to a 3rd place finish.(He could have hung on during the backstretch and used his kick on the final stretch and could have avoided Stewart).However, his drive to win is what actually screwed him over.
Also, he was only 21 in this race; easily the youngest. His chances to win in montreal were great.

He won again 4 years later in the 1976 olympics. Why all the arguing? Pre is my favorite athelte that I look up too, but he didn't win. Pre stood for something besides this. That's why I like him. While some of the Fins ( and other athletes) were proven to have used doping of some sorts, Viren was not one of them. There was never any proof, and he was offered a million dollars at one time to tell "the truth". Viren denied adamantly that he used any type of doping at all, and the offer was reneged. As with most great performances, the accusations were from either bitter people, or sore losers.

I don't think there was any way that Viren was going to be beat in Montreal. He was too strong, and became extremely fast in the final stages of the race. He was racing extremely well at the shorter distances, and was able to put a finishing kick together when it counted. Watch the final 600m.. Viren is able to match the surges with less effort, and knows it- he covered their moves, and only really put it down at the last turn... amazing. Steve Prefontaine had no chance.

It's a fruitless argument. Viren and Pre are not comparable, heck even Pre and Gammoudi aren't comparable. Of course we will never know what Pre could have done, but it is highly unlikely he would have beaten Viren in Montreal. Always possible, but highly unlikely. Pre was good, very good, but Viren was great.
