  • What a cool, groovy song!

  • oy, fenderrhodes2 and shademonger13. how about we all just calm down and enjoy the music?

  • I have known Jackie since his beginnings and I do think there are some songs he has written that could become "classics". On his latest CD, "Don't let the Devil take your mind" is a great lyrical song with different meanings for each listening ear. "mexican girl" is a musically terriffic song. He is still a kid, not close to 30 yet. Watch him rise and shine, I know he will.

  • the kid has a hell of guitar collection ..that's a Gibson SG

  • i don't care what anyone says. I have flown from NY to SFO just to see him play. I have done it a couple of times and have NEVER been let down.

  • Personally, I think he needs a better band and maybe that would bring more out of Jackie. Otherwise, they sound, to me, like a decent local bar band. I also hear a lot of off notes in the soloing which shouldn't be happening. I think Jackie is a better guitarist than the other guy, but I think Jackie should study jazz and classic music more intently which will open up his playing and his writing. It is hard when one limits themselves to just rock/blues/folk/county.

  • I think a band with more jazz chops would open Jackie's old and new material up. The band plays his songs too straight, not enough "SWANG" to it.

  • Personally, I think Jackie should focus on writing some songs that will get picked up by bigger names in the industry. If he doesn't, this is about the peak of his career. There are general rules in the industry that if a singer/songwriter hasn't made a big hit by the time they are 30, they can't really go much further. It's just what I have noticed. If you look at the people that have made long standing careers, they usually have done something noteworthy before the age of 30.

  • on the iclips feed the voice mike was weak also...but it is Warren's show and GUITARS RULE!!!!

  • The vocal mike was way low his entire set. Not much can be doen for the recording if the sound's just not there in the first place...

  • Nobody thinks he sounds like Dylan. He reminds us of him. hes a very creative lyricist. How are his lyrics demeaning to women?

  • He is comparing women to a Ball and Chain.

  • no... he says

"Like a Ball and Chain, shes in my brains yeah shes in my vains, aint been the same since I heard her name, shes like a Ball And Chain"

meaning he cant get her off his mind. say what you want, but this kid has soul. you should have heard him sing the beatle's "don't let me down"

  • Well, when a guy talks about a women and makes reference to a Ball and Chain, it is usually not a good thing. Ball and Chain has been used so many times, it just gets a little old. Sorry, but Jackie has not written any destined to become a classic songs yet. In this day and age of this style music, he has to compete with guys like John Mayer, who has gone Double Platinum and has major hits that will become classic songs. I am still waiting for Jackie to write a classic song.....

  • @FenderRhodes2 dude, jackie greene isnt some sellout like john mayer. hes not trying to write hits, hes a songwriter. not classic songs???? theyre masterpieces. shaken? dont let the devil take your mind? its americana at its best man!!! you try and write some classic songs!!!!!

  • @shademonger13 Some of his stuff isn't that big of a deal. Usually the best songwriters get more attention and yield better sales as a result. Usually record labels will look at sales as one method for deciding whether to extend his contract and then they put the artist on bigger tours. Whether you like John Mayer or not, he has done work with legends like Herbie Hancock, more consistent player/singer.

  • @shademonger13 Do you know what makes a "classic" song? What's your definition? Is it because you like it? Or because people in the industry have decided it is a classic song? When is Jackie Greene going to play Eric Clapton's Crossroads concert? That might change my mind a little.

  • @FenderRhodes2 a classic song in my view is something that will hold up for years and not fade out over time like most popular bullshit music. john mayer is an excellent musician, but you can say the same thing about jackie, theyre both both different, john is a true modern day rockstar and jackie is an underground folk rocker and concentrates more on writing songs. and he will never be seen at a crossroads guitar festival but neither will john prine, kris krisstoferson, or townes van zandt.

  • @FenderRhodes2 all of those guys have written classic songs, regarded as some of the best ever written, but they were never commercially succesful like john mayer.....

  • @shademonger13 John Mayer is a commercial success because he is much easier to market. For many women, he is easy on the eyes, his music is very accessable by a very large audience, and the industry just likes to promote him. I don't know if you are old enough by when Kris Kristopherson was in his hey day, He was marketing just as much, just at a time, when it before the internet. They would put Kris Kristopherson in movies, etc., his music was played every 5 minutes on the radio, etc.

  • @shademonger13 In the "pop" realm which is what Jackie is catagorized, if a song/album hasn't hit Gold, it probably isn't going to be deemed a classic. His latest album has that song medicine? I think he is trying to make a more accessable pop tune. I haven't heard the entire album, but I think the guy is going overboard with the handclaps. I think he needs more cowbell...... :-)

  • @FenderRhodes2 i thought jackie was into the singer songwriter/americana/folk rock/jam thing then he was pop.... he tours with govt mule and the black crowes and hits the major jam festivals, but i do agree that his new release is an attempt to break into the mainstream

  • @shademonger13 I haven't seen BIllboard, the on-line or physical record stores with the catagory of singer songwriter/americana/folk rock/jam thing. Usually, they have catagories like Jazz, Classical, World Beat, Adult Contemporary Pop, etc. I think the industry is getting to the point where people catagorize music in order to help people identify what the artist/band is put into. Some break ground. Either way, I don't know of any "Classic" songs that haven't been a Gold album/single.

  • @shademonger13 The name Americana music, to me, sounds like another way of saying contemporary folk/rock music. Now, if you want to compare Bob Dylan to Jackie Greene, which some have done. This is what I think they have in common.

    1. They both play acoustic guitar with a Harmonica.

    2. They both write songs that are in the same genre.

    3. They both aren't great players or singer.

    4. Jackie Greene has played many Bob Dylan songs, including, I think a CD of Dylan music.

  • @FenderRhodes2 i never made the dylan comparison. nor did i say that he is a headlining performer. that said, i respect your opinions, and i never meant what i said to become a full on disagreement. i just like jackie greene, quite a bit, and theres nothing wrong with that is there?

  • @shademonger13 I know you haven't made the Dylan comparison, but others have several years ago. They make him out to be some sort of phenom.

No, there isn't anything wrong with liking his music. I like some of his songs, but I'm not going to make him out to be something more than he is.

I think if he sought some formal training, whether it be a reputable music conservatory or private instruction to delve into jazz, classical, composition he'd be much better.

  • @shademonger13 Here is where Jackie Greene and Bob Dylan are different.

    1. Bob Dylan has written classic songs that have been either extremely popular and have been redone into other classic versions by top musicians.

    2. Bob Dylan was really more of a poet than a musician. He just put his poetry to music and came out with songs that became classics.

    3. I still haven't heard Dylan play or record a Jackie Greene song nor have I heard anyone else do so and create another classic rendition.

  • @shademonger13 Now lets talk about touring. The only time that Jackie plays anything other than an opening act on a major stage is when he is playing with Phil Lesh or he is jamming. Yeah, he has opened up for Black Crowes, govt. Mule, etc., but he has been the opening act. Opening acts that don't progess very quickly and remain opening acts are generally considered warm up bands that most people forget shortly after the next band begins.

  • @shademonger13 Opening acts that remain opening acts for more than one or two major tours aren't generally considered contenders or creating enough interest in going much further in their career. Most of the top bands were originally opening acts for someone else and then if they were good enough and sold enough records they could then go to second bill or then top bill. Jackie doesn't have the karizma to be a second or top bill act. his act isn't strong enough.

  • @FenderRhodes2 honestly man, im just saying listening to jackie beats the hell out of a lot of modern day music. yes, hes no bob dylan, yes, hes an opening act, but the bottom line is that he has gone farther in his musical career and written better songs then me, and probably you too.

  • @shademonger13 I am not trying to compare you or I to Jackie Greene. I make comparisons to other professional musicians/singers/songwriters in the same basic genre as he is. Whether you like it or not, he is in the same catagory as John Mayer. Jackie opened up for Mayer several years ago doing the acoustic sets and Jackie is still selling a very small number of CDs, Mayer is double platinum. Mayer is much better at singing, playing and songwriting largely due to his focus/training.

  • So, did Jackie put out his version of Don't Let Me Down on a CD and sell a million units? Unless he has, he doesn't have any major hits with him or someone else singing his songs, so he really can't get much bigger unless he starts spitting out some major recordings. Phil Lesh and Friends doesn't have any major releases with or without Jackie, they are just riding on the coat tails of old Dead songs.

  • No I actually saw the Dont Let Me Down with phil. It sounds to me like you guys don't think some one is good unless they have major releases or have a classic (in your opinion). Not every song has to be deep and meaningful. Most artist have songs that don't really mean anything at all, including Dylan.

  • Well, there are some guidelines in what makes a classic. Beatles were a rare pop/rock band that had many classic songs that could be redone by others and also be considered to be another classic rendition. Maybe he did an OK version of it, maybe not. I haven't heard it, i have only heard what I have heard and my ears tell me that Jackie is probably near or at his peak in terms of his status in the music industry. I just don't see him writing songs that will last the test of time.

  • This song is very cliche, it is approachable, but very cliche.

  • its bob dylan lite

  • Jackie rocks. This kid's got a great future if he can continue to write great songs.
