met these guys in the queens hotel in hul ,im from glasgow anti facist all the way .red flag flying high ,short memory u lot power to the people and tam sheridans livin proof ,only torys -wasps going to jail are for screwing expensises
I really hear aloud the messages in this song - in the 80's we had hard times and The Housemartins lyrics hit on the Nations blindness to the powers above that kept the working classes down i.e. the Government and Monarchy. It's music for people who have been there and felt it........they hit the message home in the song - still nothing has changed 25 years on - lots of people still living in squalor who just can't get ahead in life.
"even when their kids were starving, they all thought the queen was charming"- RICH BITCH, FUCK THE QUEEN. FUCK THE ROYAL FAMILEY hate them love the housemartins and T.B.S
@bullybass1 And joy division, echo and the bunnymen, the happy mondays, new order, the pogues, that's all I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm sure your still right.
@anycolonyyoulike I agree that there were some decent hangovers from the Punk thing "Unknown Pleasures" being one of the all time greatest albums, Bunnymen, Cure & Banshees were still doing decent stuff. I always thought of the Happy Mondays more of a 90's band, even if they did release their first ep in 1985! Pogues, bloody brilliant but hardly pop!
@mtaylor848 : Oh, it's about Thatch all right, but it changes perspective and gets a bit surreal: starts off sounding like the Falkland islanders and moves on to other Thatch "victims" then on to her as a victim.
Thanks a lot! - I've been waiting months for this classic from their later period to be posted. "Choose Jesus, choose Marx, choose life" (Or something to that effect, following the statement about not trying to join a party you are not invited to in the Hull 4, London 0 notes.)

The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death, the best song title ever. Slack jaws of the world make way for the real winners

@mtaylor848 - Absolutely - I don't know who would think it's about Thatcher. The chorus even mentions the Queen!!
And I'm with you on emulating the French in that respect : )

One of the BEST bands ever, EVER (if not the best..).

The 80's was the worst period of British pop music except for The Smiths, James and The Housemartins.

I love this. Probably the minor chords in the verse, but when I hear it I think 'hmm, it sounds like it's time to get up and do something'

This would be a great cover for someone as we slide into another batch of Tory years! Cameron is like a hybrid of the worst of Thatcher and Blair!
