Was a BT on AO-60 NANTAHALA. Black Oil King. Bring back memories. Rough water, night, red lights as a carrier pulls up alongside. Malta..Kent cigarettes could get a lot.
I never thought I'd look back on rough seas and miss it, but I do. Some things you experience in the Navy are irreplacable. That looks like a cruiser, I was on a frigate, every swell was an experience.
officers should learn to clean up after themselves'...oh thats right...they have enlisted to do it for them......oh the things i did to their toothbrushes.....go okane..........
OMG that oiler almost ate it! so did you guys! You must be an officer, cuz I don't see you on any of the lines for unrep detail in any of these vids haha=)
"I rather work at Mcdonalds ." You have to be kidding us. No guts no glory! Grow up and go become a Destroyman (woman). Have some adventure in your life before your too old to enjoy it.
someone explain to me why i joined the Navy. I get to experience that every soon when i get to my ship. Which just so happens to be a DDG. oooohhhh man!
@streuny06 A year ago... Man you are already out on the ship and 'loving' life. =) The Navy is all about what you make of it. I can't think of many things I'd rather be doing than this. =)
i was with big pete on watch i think in aux 1 cant remember when this happened, i remember hearing every one from deck saying a huge wave came over the deck and knocked every one down...do you know what ever happened to the vidoe with acdc thunderstruck behind it? it was made on one of those deployments.....da mighty Okane
I was on the Independence from 94-96 and I think our captain got a kick out of seeing what that old tub could do under adverse conditions. We went through a hurricane on our way to Hawaii and I remember waves coming up over the top of the flight deck. Glad I was on an aircraft carrier, though, because I saw what the smaller ships were going through and I'm not so sure my stomach could have handled that...
Served aboard the Adams DDG-2 as a radarman back in the late 60`s.
Had a friend on board the CVA Roosevelt and he used to laugh at us saying there were times when all he could see were our stacks sticking up out of the water!
I was an AO, and a lucky fun AO cause I also was part of the ship's armory. We used to shoot the line across the supply ship's during Unrep's. Those were fun! I've shot from each unrep station and only missed twice...that was fun as hell! But yeah, those rogue waves and wicked waters between the ships can be wild. If you heard "WAVE!"...just grab onto anything fixed to the deck to keep ya from being washed overboard...ah fun fun fun!
Oh nevermind, Yokosuka local ships don't do "WESTPACS" cause they are always there. San Diego ship then? Can't imagine a Hawaiian ship ever goes anywhere.
I was on the O'Brien in the winter of '03. We hit terrible seas east of China. Everybody was vomiting. I can tell you are on a DDG in this video. I went to one next. Which one? CDW? JSM?
Of all three major cruises I did, Westpac '87..coming out of the Sea of Japan going into the Pacific, just north of Japan, that was rough. Bering Sea, with a "why-on-earth-is-the-capt'n-trying-an-unrep-day", and going around the Horn, 'round South America as we were going from San Diego to Philly. All those seas were rough 'n wild. I even did a tour abourd FFG 11 Clark during counter-drug ops in the caribbean (hard work LOL ) rough storms in atlantic heading to Norfolk.
The "why on earth" is answered with the fact that we held off for as long as we could. Using as little fuel as possible. It was to rough to unrep and to rough to pull in. When it came down to it we had to get a little fuel to pull in.... hehe to rough to do either and we did both. =) It was something I won't forget for a long while.
Try that on an FFG. We would hit rough weather all the time around Japan. We even rode in the eye of a typhoon for two days til it died. Everyone was sea-sick from the C.O. all the way down to the newest deck SN.
OMG, trying to do an UNREP in those seas? Sounds as crazy as our CO when I was aboard USS Constellation during northpac, wanting to do an UNREP in the Bering Sea. I was on the flight deck, ...and it wasn't gonna happen (and didn't) But great vid! Thanks for sharing , love riding the waves!
Oh ya, did it on the Kennedy in the north atlantic in 83.. That was great watching them crash over the flight deck. Heck of a place to UNREP all them small boys.. Almost ran over a Russian DD trying to get outa our way...

They don't sink from weather. Maybe running into something but even then the crew will keep it up.
