I don't have any real answers, but maybe something happened where they had to keep Ayame in hiding. There was an Anime called Ninja Cadets which had a similar plot. Unfortunately the Anime was never finished, as it stopped production after only 2 OVAs.

The "my Ayame" should be heard as "why, Ayame", a form of an english sentense where someone expresses surprise.. Hope I explained it a bit clearly..

Besides, checking Ayame's bio, we learn that master Shiunsai found her a long time ago near a burned down village as the only survivor (now probably an orphan) and he took her in..
