  • "I had the better end of the deal, i lent you my body; you lent me your dream."

  • Maybe the ending when he burns himself is like, getting rid of the lesser material that this society does to everything. But I listened to this at my grandparents house, all the walks are almost completely glass, but I turned this song on while it was storming, magical

  • @LTACS mind=blown.

  • @LTACS How did you come to that conclusion? I've watched it a dozen times and I don't see it.

  • @LTACS You were probably one of the same people who assumed Inception was all a dream at the end.

  • Comment removed

  • @LTACS Proof positive.

  • Comment removed

  • @LTACS Well if you've never seen it, you won't get the comparison. A lot of people over-analyzed the ending to the movie, that's all. I've never really seen anyone over-analyze the end to Gattaca until you.

  • Comment removed

  • @LTACS After analyzing your original comment, I would have to agree with half of it. Perhaps Vincent was indeed Antoine all along, not literally, but in spirit. If you think back to when his father said "he'll do something" he was really hoping Vincent would live up to what he wanted "Antoine" to be. In the end, Vincent wasn't Antoine, Vincent was as great as Antoine but still Vincent; he made a name for himself. That's perseverance, and that's what this movie is all about. :)

  • esta pelicula me encanta, la vi cuando tenia 15 años, en la escuela, en la clase de biologia, debo decir que me siento identificado con vincent, el personaje de ethan hawke

i love this movie, i saw it when i was 15, at school, in biology class, i have to say that i feel identified with vincent, ethan hawke's character

  • when michael bay try's to sleep... this movie and others keep him up at night. he is a sad, sleepless, demented little prick and he will die a rich man but ultimately unfullfiled, unheroic and unvailidated as a human being. passion and spirit are the only things money (or genetics) cant buy.

  • There is no Gene for the human spirit, and this soundtrack backs that up every time i hear it, i want to do better in life

  • seriously. box office flop? this movie was one of the best sci-fi movies made in our time. people need to learn to think and not get brainwashed by current "popular" media.

  • suuuch an under rated movoe...so few people know about it but it might be the most amazing and inspiring movie ive seen

  • It's just like Heavy Rain music - AMAZING!!!

  • @TheAga131 YES!!! I just played that game today and I heard the soundtrack and had to come to listen to this. Did not expect to find someone else who had made the same connection... I don't know many people who have seen Gattaca or played Heavy Rain. Both are awesome though.

  • what an underrated movie.

  • Fantastico, maravilloso tema y excelente pelicula e interpretación! Adoro a Nyman! es mi clásico contemporáneo favorito. Gracias por compartir

  • U mean Jude Law commits suicide at the end? Does he really? I mean, it looks like it, for sure, but the feeling is more like, he changes his mind about hating space etc and decides to sneak on board to follow after all, just for the hell of it. But I guess he dies, anyway it's kind of a confusing scene I think.

  • @usercaph How is it confusing? He locks himself in an incinerator and turns it on...

  • @usercaph I was confused about Jude Law's ending scene too. I think that he was depressed before..he could not win the gold medal at a prestigious swimming competition. But after he met Vincent, he realized that he could be happy with the silver medal because it wasn't genes that determined success.he wore it in the incinerator. I thought when he gave his lock of hair to Vincent at the end, he was passing down himself to someone who had the determination and the dreams to do almost anything.

  • @HeartSeamstress I thought the silver medal indicated his feelings of failure.

The man, destined to be great because of his genes, had become useless now he was in a wheelchair (or so he felt). Vincent gave him purpose again, but with him gone, there was nothing left for him to stay. So, he commited suicide.

Jerome was trapped in the idea that his genes would determine success. He couldn't see that strength of character is much more important than any physical privilege.

  • the strong of the waves make music

  • The BEST SONG in this soundtrack; and one of my FAVORITE SONGS EVER!!!!!!!!

I can't believe his friend suicides; that is definitely the saddest part of the movie. I wonder what happens next. GATTACA 2 xD

  • I love this whole song, but at around 2:10 and after, my heart becomes heavy with emotion, ready to burst.

  • I really like this film. And music is gorgeous !

But when I heard it, I was shocked because I feel as I was playing game "Heavy Rain". It's really similar. But I love both !

  • Imager

  • Serious fucking business being discussed here in this comments section, you guys. Srs fuckin business.

  • @TheEpisteme For sure. Most srs ever.

  • This is my favorite music from the move "Gattaca"

  • This song is like... identical to the song "Before The Storm" from Heavy Rain. Seriously.

  • @CheckeredParadox No its not you fucking idiot. I searched that song, listened to it after your post. You wasted my time.

  • @Costoffplus Actually, the melody is the exact same. I never told you to go look it up, dumbass. It was you "wasting" your own time. I never made you do anything.

  • @CheckeredParadox your fucking death they dont sound the same! fuck you too !

Sublime!!!!!!!! Gracias por compartir

  • Regarding the religion argument... Many of the scientists of discovered things vital to our beliefs in evolution and certain areas of logic were christians... Not saying that justifies Christianity, but that science isn't absolutely absent of God's Influence.

  • Ohhhh..what can i say ?...amaaaaaazin''''

  • please just enjoy the music. i don't think youtube is great as forum for intelligent discussion. there is no moderation and people will simply be annoyed.

  • @luckyhat4 agreed, and the people that just ask for thumbs up or talk about something that has nothing to do with the video.

  • I like this.

  • This is beautiful, i want it to play at my funeral!!

  • Where can I get the score sheet for this song??????? I don't care if it's piano solo or not. I am doing a report on this amazing piece and I can't find the sheet music for it anywhere :.(

  • @Kaeflower715 its not exactly "popular." I've known many musicians that can tell notes and things just from listening to it, so try that.

  • amazing film beautiful piece they fit together like the cells in our bodies make us one

  • this makes me quiver... it´s just perfect

  • Ah, I love it when Vincent kicks his cocky little brother's arse, saves him, then looks to the stars knowing he's truly earned his place in society.

  • Musica dolcissima a commento di un film che ho visto piu´ volte e non solo con i miei occhi ... ancor adesso socchiudendoli mi par di salire a bordo di una navetta ed alzarmi anch`io in cielo verso una meta ignota .

  • this will play at my funeral

  • @cunners1000 can i come?

  • @NSFThunderbird I can't believe it either...

It's these things that make me rejoice for the whole human race that we are not merely organisms that can take up space. There is still beauty to behold, a spirit that burns and a dream that rests in all of us.... "There is no gene for the human spirit."

  • I can't believe 5 people actually disliked this.

  • 2:59

  • My #1 all-time favorite movie, no exceptions. What a great message and so beautifully made.

  • this movie is a piece of art and the music made so strongly emotional ;'(

  • We spend our whole lives in flux, searching, needing and wanting, death will be the ultimate peaceful sleep, this music is the next best thing for now

  • If anyone knows a link to get his paying or not, it would be incredibly appreciated

  • To any real movie & music lovers out there . Isn't it great to enjoy the best of both worlds?

  • powerful

  • There is no gene for the human spirit...Great....

  • I want to die hearing this song play... with the man I love in my thought and of my parents, even if they never accept me being gay... :(

  • @helloadios12

In the film, this song is played during the swim scene with Vincent and Anton. We then understand that Vincent never held anything back. He had everything going against him in this modern world: even his family told him how his natural shortcomings were insurmontable. Yet he chose to ignore what others were saying about him and lived his life to the fullest. Just do the same so that while you are listening to this song at the end, you can have a smile on your face.

    Ciao

  • This song and the feelings it creates ARE evidences of soul existence ;)

  • there's a particular moment in the Heavy Rain's score that kinda plagiarizes this. Still an amazing work. I love Michael Nyman.

  • yes! i agree with you. they're very similar. wouldn't call it plagiarism though, they're different enough

  • so sad....but amazing

  • great song,, i will listen to this song on my graduation day

  • Vincent! How are you doing this Vincent? How have you done any of this? We have to go back.

It's too late for that. We're closer to the other side.

What other side? You wanna drown us both?

You wanna know how I did it? This is how I did it Anton. I never saved anything for the swim back.

  • nice

  • :You want me to prove it to you? I'll prove it to you!!!"

  • fate and destiny are stronger than all progress and technology can ever be.

  • the music make this movie epic. it`s the music that makes scenes like the swimming scene or the ending so intense.

  • I saw this movie in my Biology class since were studying mutations and DNA.. Great movie, I really loved it and this soundtrack was amazing.

  • i did too

  • @CoMpLeXGFX

I had to watch it too. I must have seen it atleast 6 times over as a child, my mother always wanted to me to be an astronaught. It wasn't until Bio last semester that I actually GOT it . ___ .'. The ending with the doctor was just amazing. . .

  • @CoMpLeXGFX

I watched it for my Philosophy class lol xD..I love t his movie

  • @FYTYTY Me too. And I also loved this film. I must have been the only one in my class, though...

  • @CoMpLeXGFX i was gonna watch it in science but the sound didnt work so we couldn't. :(

  • @CoMpLeXGFX I think that's were everybody saw this movie lol.

  • @icetyrant Actually we studied it in English and not Biology. It was my favourite thing we've ever done in English. I love the depth of this film. For example even a detail so little as the staircase is shaped like a double helix.

  • Perfect soundtrack, unmistakably Michael Nyman, and still fantastic. Thanks for posting, really enjoyed it...

  • Up there with Jerry Goldsmith too. Great composer as well.

I read the book too. I can see how he used it. Great SPAs and PPAs because of the mastermind. It's cool to see him applying the natural process of goal achievement without even realizing it.

  • I don't know how people compose music like this that captures the essence of human emotion and brings people to tears.

Should be up there with John Williams.

Inspirational music for an inspirational movie.

If you like movies like this, you should read The Hidden Secret in Think and Grow Rich and then watch this movie again. You'll see how he naturally achieved his goal of traveling in space even though all the odds were stacked against him.

  • such a moving piece of music. this movie is great, but the music just brings it to a whole new level.

  • God this gives me goosebumps..

  • Michael Nyman is a genious. listen to the Ravenous OST, its another master piece from Nyman!

  • Splendid , reminds one of Prospero's Books, however, check out "Jestem"- Nyman's brilliant there too.

  • best 4 ever, Michael Nyman rulz, Gattaca rulz the world,

  • "Gattaca rulz the world" LOL what a statement!

  • I couldn't believe that this track hadn't been posted before.

It's such an amazing piece of music and everytime I watch Gattaca I get a Knot in my stomach and a lump in my throat when the race scene is on.

I can only apologise that there isn't really a video to go along with it.

  • this movie illustrates the lonelyness and sacrifice associated with pure drive, passion, and success. it really inspires me. i will never get enough of this movie. its a masterpiece not many can relate too.

  • @MRMATTYBILL me too

  • @MRMATTYBILL music like this is best left for our minds to interpet, brillian music

  • @MRMATTYBILL even the poster is beautiful :)

  • Comment removed

  • @MRMATTYBILL That scene reminds me of what kind of asshole I'm with my younger brother, it sucks. Great scene, great movie, great message.

P.S.: and great soundtrack too :)

  • @MRMATTYBILL absoloutley beautiful the soundtrack to this film was such an explanation mark to an outstanding piece of visual art alan arkin uma and ethan did wonderful. and michael nyman WOW!

  • the scene when jerome/vincent and anton are swimming out to the horizon has to be one of the most emotionally stirring in movie history. With this piece, by Nyman, anyone who says that they didn't feel themselves welling up doesn't have a soul !

  • I agree. Just the line alone "I didn't save anything for the swim back" almost brings me to tears.

  • well said !

  • well said

  • I agree with you, only there is no soul

  • Yes, there is a soul. We have collected a lot of evidence for the human spirit so far. Study it!

  • @Biochips1

    no there is no soul

show me one evidence for the existence of a soul

you are just afraid of dying, that's all. Just admit it

  • @TheMorbidAtheist If there was no soul and no God i wouldn't be afraid of dying at all!.literally!....Why don't you prove that humans souls don't exist! While you are at it why don't you show me that gravity exists! Don't prove it! Show it to me! The pull on every object might just be habitual obedience of atoms for all we know! :p Since we are talking about evidence i.e. physical and visible proof why don't you show me time travel too! I mean its been proven by Einstein! Show it to me please!

  • @terazillian If you need a fictional construct to live like a civilized being, then you are truly in a sad state. There is no empirical evidence suggesting the existence of any god or gods. There is no empirical evidence suggesting that any one of the thousand's of religions that man has constructed over its short history is in anyway truer than the rest. If man needed religion to stay sane, then the majority of scientists would be in jail, which is obviously not the case.

  • @InfiniteIdentities Obviously you never read anything about the jurisprudence and legal theory of how law came to be and how greatly regardless of what the critics say it is effected and shaped by religion!

  • @InfiniteIdentities "If you need a fictional construct to live like a civilized being, then you are truly in a sad state."

I wouldn't call it fictional per se. Religion has so completely mixed fact and legend that it's too murky to separate the two. What it boils down to is a grand symbolism for all things, which is the most important aspect as well as the beauty of any faith. So I would call it a construct of symbolism. Civilized people do rely on "constructs" as you put it.

  • @terazillian You've been completely brainwashed by religion... May "God" have mercy on your soul :P

  • @thenewplayer You've been completely brainwashed by the "need of proof"....May "God" have mercy on your soul :P i.e. If you can prove it truly exists! :D

  • Respond to this video... Off course i could only be put to death if i was caught! Millions of people get away with crimes everyday! So Fat chance!

  • Excellent work!

  • Wonderful, i hope u'll never take this video off ..!! | 5*

  • I loved this movie so much!!! Wonderful OST!

  • GOSH! I love ALL of Michael Nyman's work!

  • it's played during the last ocean swimming scene which is perfect because the melody of the strings give the impression of waves, there's a kind of rowing feeling in this piece. It's a perfect precursor in the soundtrack to "The Departure"

  • Did anyone here see this movie in the theaters and not in biology class like I and so many others did?

  • I saw it in a theater in Berlin^^

  • I saw it in the theatre with a bunch of friends after Fencing class.

  • hey, I took fencing too! I thought it was going to a lot of cool sword play until I learned that you pretty much move back and forth in a straight line

  • Youtube:Stefano Ottomano

  • emotionally riveting. just amazing.

  • I love this song, so emotional ;-;

I saw this in Biology class myself, loved it.

  • haha i first saw this in biology too!! I always cry at the end :(

  • Out of all the movies my teacher has shown us in Biology (Outbreak, Inherited the Wind, and one other), this movie stands out and I'm pretty sure everyone in my class loved it.

  • yeah i just finished this movie in Biology today its so awesome.. though sad at times.. best movie ive ever seen

  • This is how I did it I don't save any thing for the swim back! :-)

  • Whats the difference between this and the Depature from Gattaca

  • The melody is different. This piece's main motif goes F EF, D CD. Whereas The Departure's main motif is F E D A C D, F E D A C A. I also think the time signatures are different (correct me if I'm wrong) but if you can't hear the difference, then we can't really help you.

  • we saw Gattaca during my GCSE R.E topic of Genetic Engineering, it moved me so much and others too, its a beautiful film and such a beatuiful score =)

  • it's my favourite too

this song mean HOPE-chalenges-LIFE!!! for me

    this song is really wonderfull

Cuando el poder del amor sobrepase el amor del poder el mundo conocerá la paz

  • wtf man que te fumaste?

  • my favourite among the gattaca soundtracks, though every song tells a story this has the nost soothing colors

  • truly this song inspires me to try harder

i've never had any real talent and i've had to work hard all my life. This is what this song stands for.

  • i LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this song makes me cry!

    everything is possible...

  • beautiful. but it's difficult to find out the soundtrack in our cd stores. :(

  • I first saw this movie in 7th grade and it amazed me and since then this has been one of my favorite movies of all time.

  • I have never saved anything for the swim back either, so I can understand... and I'm supposed to be a responsible diver.. =O

I suppose the fact that the only place I've ever felt in piece at was underwater, had something to do with it; I never want to surface...

  • have you seen "into the blue" ?

  • crap.. i mean "The Big Blue"... ( i saw into the wild recently so i got confused =) )

  • Just ask me how many times! :)

Unfortunately my eardrums can't handle free diving... But I have huge amount of respect for people who can do that!

  • ohh too bad :(

  • beautiful

  • Grande Gattaca. Enorme Nyman.

  • heh its was the highlight of my biology class too. man . scarry future.

  • this movie was the high light of my biology class, so glad we watched it.

  • why did you watch this in biology? i can see how the movie might warn you of the dangers associated with genetics but the science is very, very basic. surely a science teacher should first teach you to understand genetics and then let you make your own mind up about the possible consequences of using the technology.

  • I saw it in my 8th grade science class and I can see qhy my teacher showed it. Although science has done wonders for mankind I think it is still important for people to know where to draw the lines and to understand that there are still some ethical dilemas.

  • it's a good excuse for a teacher to watch movies during work ...

  • "I never saved anything for the swim back." gives me the tinglies, along with this song. if u've seen the movie u'll understand. beautiful

  • beatiful beatiful

  • there is something about this song that is inspiring and transcendent to me

  • wow, dont know what all the fighting is about!!! lol

love this song!!! its sooo beautiful!!!!

  • yea i have to do an essay on this movie

  • I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance.

I find this statement very true for both the situation presented in the movie and in real life. How, even on humble Earth, men have triumphed over the odds, and borne a heavy load over the tallest mountains. This is the legacy we leave as humans. To do, go, and be the impossible.

  • are you implying that all beings except men do not have souls? What a conceited notion.

  • and you're a moron

  • Same for you. Read my lips: just because I quote Faulkner DOES NOT mean I believe everything he has written, said, or done. Yes, the Roman Catholic Church has done great things and recently, promoted human rights and liberty, but do I agree with the horrors commited during the Crusades the pope started 500 years ago? No. It says in the Koran not to kill (yes, it does explicitly state that), and I support that comment, but do I support those who killed on 9/11? Heck no!

  • Not at all, I'm sorry if it looked that way, I've had many pets and I've found that all of them are selfless and caring, at least they obviously have souls and emotions. I'm just quoting Faulkner, just like if you quote a great thing that JFK said, it doesn't necessary mean you believe in everything he has done or said.

  • I have to write a disclaimer for all the unneccessary potshots taken against me. The quote "I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail because he alone among creatures has ..." was said by William Faulkner (the novelist), for his Nobel acceptance speech. I agree with some things he said , but not the "Soul" comment or some of the accompanying ideas. I just thought the basic idea behind this movie and what Faulkner said was about the same: never undestimate human.

  • Yo, buddy. It doesn't do you any good to be calling everyone an idiot or a moron. You need to learn that, in this world, not everyone will agree with being called an idiot. Calm down. I didn't even insult you.

  • Any humans want to achieve just this one aim in their lives. Reaching the other side, where things promise to be better.

No matter through what trouble you have to fight at the moment, just be aware of this other side, the shore isn't always clear to see, but it is there. Now you have to pull it through and swim like Vincent did, in dark water in a dark night with the danger of the death in his neck, but as it is said: "There is no gene for the human spirit."

  • Makes me feel sad.

  • saw the movie in my high school bio class, it was awesome
