  • HAAAAAAAAAAAALF.

  • Good stuff pt1

  • ...as long as you GROOVE...!

  • Does he have something across the top of his snare? What is that line? It's like snares (impossible of course) or duct tape.

  • @i3rucei3ruce i think it actually is his snares? they might be pulled tight so they don't shake as much

  • @infamousNfamous It can't be possible to hit metal and make it sound like that. I'm sure it's some band or maybe even tape, like duct tape. Or a special head.

  • @i3rucei3ruce yeah i guess you're right

  • "Splain"!!! I love it!! 5/5

  • Anyone know the name of the video this is from?

    Thanks!

  • read description...

  • Bernard Purdie "Groove Master" is the name of the video

  • Steely Dan sessions

  • 0:56 he laughs in the 16th-note-raster ;-)

  • @groovedoc lol true

  • that is so sick!

  • Parcaro and Bonham have this man to thank for the 1/2 time shuffle...even if they tweeked it a bit to make it their own...it's still based on this very groove.

    Thank you Mr. Purdie.

  • YOURE ALL MORONS!, in order to play this correctly you have to feel it in 48/16 time and subdivide the octuplets on the back beat. Check out Ted Reed's Syncopation if this is over your head

  • Comment removed

  • This has got to be the dirtiest most funky backbeat EVER:D now THIS man is tha masta:D

  • I love this. HAAALF NOTE!

    [2]

    ASHUASHUashuhasu

  • I love this. HAAALF NOTE!

I have to ask though - does anybody know what time signature this is in? I realized tonight that I've been playing this incorrectly - I've been playing a 12/8 shuffle, and this definitely isn't 12/8. (I think the 12/8 I'm playing is from Fool in the Rain.) I think this is actually a 6/8 shuffle in half-time or something? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I might get flamed for this, but I really want to know just for my own knowledge. It'll help me to play this correctly.

  • 123 123 123 123 123 123. ghost notes on 2&3. hi hats on 3&1 accented on the 1.

kinda really 3/3 kick/snare beat with double-time playing on 1&3 of the hihats.

  • Perhaps you meant 3/4? The more I think about this, the more I lean toward 6/8. The counting just makes sense. I guess it could also be 18/16 (following the time signature convention of 12/8 shuffle time) but the more I think about it, the less practical it is.

Counting it in six has made sense to me and I'm able to play it, so I guess I'll do that and hopefully there won't be any confusion when I say "6/8 double-time shuffle"...

  • Comment removed

  • yeah could be 3/4 im no expert when it comes to terminology & notation/theory or counting measures/signatures (even so i can play to any signature).think i was trying to emphasise the triplet 'feel'. i however feel (&play) this GROOVE to be as such:

    kick23 123 123 snare23 123 123.

18 notes played with 16th triplets. hopefully an 'expert' may now give the low-down on how this is normally notated.

  • @8iamretarded8 it is commonly notated in 4/4 but as triplets, that is three notes in one quarter note time (where you normally fit two eights or four sixteenths, I think those triplets are sixteenth triplets but not sure)

  • Osti qu'il est hot!

  • best 26th note feel shuffle in history. no wonder why steely dan had him on so many recording sessions

  • 26th note feel? seriously.. i mean i can feel it.. but counting it:| Thats going way to far for me:P as long as i feel it i'm fine:P

  • hahahaha. sorry, dude. 16th note feel.

well, i guess terry bozzio with frank zappa was used to this crazy measures. :-)

  • I can barely see his hands moving on the ghost notes. this guy is a beast.

  • HAAAALLLFF notes!....that scared me lol

  • @2andFoh yeah he was gon splain to yah!!!

  • Not Explain! Splain! he's class.

  • this guy is AMAZINGLY funny

  • lol this guy is a buddah! I love how his playing makes him giggle. He has probably played it a billion times but every time is like the first for him! Love it!

  • SPLAIN

  • Nobody can have that much fun.

    Mr berdie, you´re pure groove

  • Some sick groovin there. His ghostnotes are perfect

  • Bonham got it from this man, one of his heroes.

Utterly awesome. Both of em.This is pure inspirational.

  • Sounds like a 6/8 version of Fool in the Rain. Did John Bonham inspire this groove or vice versa?

  • "It's also HAAAAALF notes" what a drummer!

  • @downjones72 Drummer World has a great page on him! Bio, videos etc.

  • This man has soul leakin out his ears! I love it!

  • is it just me or does it sound like the groove from rosanna?

  • that's because its a half time shuffle, which is what is used in that song. there are variations, but yeah. this man had so much stick control its almost not healthy.

  • @DrummerSama The drummer in Rosanna (Jeff P) took inspiration in part from the Purdy shuffle to create that beat for Toto in that song...........so you are corect....

  • @jacopman Indeed he did...and he also tooks elements forn the Bonham suffle and combined it Purdie's shuffle and came up with his famous Rosanna shuffle.

  • not sure if Porcaro INTENTIONALLY combined them. i guess that as a musician, you integrate the music you've heard into what you play...wheter you want it or not... its kinda subconscious.

  • @tutuyin Yeah...I watched the video where Jeff says he took elements from both to create his own shuffle.

Just type Jeff Parcaro into the search bar and it will pop up.

  • What a great guy!

  • this guys laugh is like the coolest thing ever

  • the snare i think its an 14 x 8. if not then get an 14 x 8. fucking sick shit.

anyways i wanted to say that i love this guy's groove. the way he puts it all together and the feel its fucking awesome. i just came in my pants. lmfao jk

  • Dang what a huge snare!

  • I Love it.

  • what's so funny bernie

  • sick

  • 1:24 is the beat for Grapvine Fires by Deathcab

  • The Purdie Shuffle is a famous beat. Jason McGerr would be the first to tell you he stole the beat from Babylon Sisters (among many others)
