@ultimatetoturial56 $230 for an i7 920 is definitely worth the money. 4 cores with hyper threading technology that create 8 existing cores! I wouldn't be complaining about the price! I just got my i7 920 at my door step this morning, still need the ASUS Rampage III Formula motherboard, but I'm sure from the reviews of the i7 CPU's, the performance will be nasty.
well, yah. Most games only use 1 or 2 cores, when the i7 has 4 physical (8 virtual) of course it wont use all of them, plus 90% of the Game is done with the Graphics card.... Try Rendering something in Maya, working in After effects, and Photoshop all at the same time. Then you'll see what it can do.....
most games and apps may not use more than 2 thread's but that is no reason not to have an i7.
Windows is not prejudice when assigning cores to an app.
What it will do however is assign a thread to the least used core.
When you have multiple tasks running, say 4 applications running a total of 8 threads. We can easily see why having an i7 with hyper threading enable is the easy choice.
There are already games with recommended specs having a Quad-Core.
oh i know. the i7 is a bad ass processor. i have one running at 4 Ghz. Pair it up with windows 7 and any good graphics card made in the last year or so and you have a kickass system. Most of my programs that I use take full advantage of all 8 threads in my i7 and its about twice as fast as my Q6600@3.5Ghz.
I've had my i7 920 upto 4.3 on air @75C stressed last summer. I've been to busy lately to and have since lost interest. I keep it @ 3.8 24/7 and it's more than enough for me.
I'm sure you need to change a lot more settings and have faster ram than I have. I don't really have much knowledge aboutany of the settings in the bios. I would love to get it below 1.3 at 4 though...
I would much rather go with Intel now then back a year ago.
@ DanLightning. I guess the best solution isn't open source then OK. Hey how's Conficker working for ya? Not a problem on Linux. But then again you have something to look forward to, more Windows exploits
There's a reason there are known exploits of Windows, it's that Windows XP and Vista dominate the market. If you were going to write a malicious piece of software, would you write it for an OS that was on 2% of the world's computers or 95% of the world's computers? It just makes sense.
If Linux was on top, it would have the same problem.
But back on the subject, while being more expensive, Intel's CPU's are still better. I'd go with an E8500 right now sooner than I would a Phenom.
OK sure they dominate because of window's affair with all the oem computer manufacturers. + DirectX which only windows can use. It's like a new car maker, they are going to have a tough time competing against the previously established ones. That doesn't mean the small guy's car is inferior to the big company's one. Dual boot
No I've tried Linux , Ubuntu and Its not user friendly and you can't do anything on it, okay lets say we aren't all into games all Ubuntu has is effects but you have to go to hell to install them
windows has the easiest installation just run and click, click, click then your done but Ubuntu you have to open a terminal and type ????? --replace
Linux isn't worth the hassle No dual booting I could of had both but Ubuntu wasn't worth the space it used
Ok, so me clicking on synaptic and choosing something to install. That's real hard :O. It's the sht like configuring usb devices and grub that's what qualifies as remotely hard.
Dual booting, yea wasn't worth the extra $39 HD for a free OS. Audacity, Avidemux, Tovid, Wireshark, Apache, Eggdrop, Skype, VLC, Adobe reader, Wine, CompizConfig, Gimp........Ubuntu can do nothing obviously.
Ill try to come up with a list of things windows can do over linux but in the mean time ill give you some matches (dont care about these-Avidemux, Tovid, Wireshark, Apache, Eggdrop) Okay now lets get to windows, wow adobe reader i thought windows could do that too... but ??? directx Microsoft office, games, ObjectDock + Avedesk + CursorFX + Deskspace + AutoHotKey + TrueTransparency + Madotate + Stacks Docklet + Standalone Stack. = better than ubunt effects wait there is more
AMD just got bought out by a United Emirates technology company. I'm not sure if AMD will have the same name or not. They have finally lost the battle with Intel when it comes to consumer CPUs. That's just the tip of the iceberg.
good to know still with i7 fsx has errors with i7 maybe better with I8 I HOPE ONE DAY SOON

What kind of voltages did you have your i7 at for 4.3? at 4, I'm testing 1.325 vcore right now, hopefully it works.
Remoth000 2 years ago
My C0 stepping require 1.35v.
If you ahve a D0 i've seen reports of the 920 needing as little as 1.25v @ 4.3GHz

DanLightning 3 years ago
the phenom II ? yeah, i heard about it, is gonna be a bit faster then the i7.. thats what i heard
kdark54 3 years ago
The Phenom was supposed to be faster than the best Intel quad-core at the time...

I've just always heard from AMD fanboys how much Intel sucks at doing what has brought them so much success.
It's like hearing Linux and Apple fanboys say the same thing about Windows; it's still the best solution on the market...
Dunno, just my thoughts =P
