I love Heath's psychotic joker and her certainly fit the clown and the criminal. Jack took on a more mob style boss Joker, he was a good Joker in his own respect. However I think that I have to agree that it was Mark Hammil who really created the perfect balance and fit 'The Clown Prince of Crime". He wasn't bound by his body and it was his spirit who created the Joker.
I really loved Jack Nicholsons Joker, a great act, but Eath Ledgers version is just astounding. Psycho to the bone, evil to the bone. Dont misunderstand me, both are incredible in their version of the Joker, I love them both! And Mark Hamill.. Wow, agree with you ppl, the best Joker laugh ever!
Jack Nicholson played the Joker like someone who has never picked up a Batman comic in his life and told to "play a villain clown". I think there is something Mark Hamill has hiding, because his voice is like the Joker coming straight from the page, then he gave Heath a bunch of pointers.
Okay as far as this heath vs. Jack shit that everybody is going on about, who was the best joker? the real answer is BOTH.. because you need the clown and the anarchist criminal to make the whole persona.. throw in Mark Hamill's voice and you have the perfect Joker..
mark was good, but it was only his voice. heath and jack are tied because they both were awesome in different ways. and then there's Cesar, who just plain sucked.
@butterball97 Actually, Mark's acting was taken into consideration. The animators would routinely take the actions and facial expressions he did while recording and put them into the animation.
lol i love how people are biased in likeing the old one more.
the 89 batman was like their favorite when it came out, and with anger they refuse to accept a better one, like the dark knight.
This laugh is stupid as fuck, any person can laugh like this. even i can; "HAHA HEEE HAA HAHA" damn. i just did it.
Mark Hamil's laugh is not nearly as good as heaths, i mean listen to it, it sounds so much like a legit joker. Hamil's just good at everything else, cuz its a cartoon, they can do that.
"Oh there will be a hot time in the old town tonight!" I always thought that was a pretty random line. But it's a good one though. It shows us all how crazy the Joker is!
I think so far all picks for Joker were great. To pick the best, when they all played a different type of Joker for different times. Jack more comic/ eveil and Heath evil/comic. Mark best laugh!!
What about Caesar Romero's Joker ? He never came across really, truly SINISTER, partially because the 60's Batman was campy, & meant for a younger audience.
Honestly, this is getting to be childish and was pointless to begin with. Jack, Heath, Mark all did/do fantastic roles. As for their portrayals; in the end, it's the writer/director that characterizes each Joker. In this sense, you cannot accurately compare each interpretation of the Joker, because they are all very different, and essentially very different characters. Quit contemplating which is better based on performance. The character and the performance are 2 completely separate things.
i hate this joker... worst joker ever. He isn't dark at all, like cmon.... this crap batman movie series is more toward the "childish" version of batman. I much more prefer Mark Hamils Joker from the cartoon or Arkham Asylum and Heith Ledgers joker.
....not sure if the last post was successful, so ill do it again....
so what your saying is that paralyzing the batgirl, and killing the second robin isn't dark?... and laughing at death, and killing without a second thought isn't dark either? hmmmm..... guess the dictionary should re-do itself since clearly its wrong.
i guess you get your information from the movies and cartoons not the actual comics itself. You know cause it's not like the comics started it all or anything because they weren't dark and that is all batman is, is what you're stating.
I got my information from several comics. I dont know what company did what... but Batman and Joker in general are very dark characters. I hate the joker from the first movie because he's not dark at all. The Joker i love is the one from the major comics where he kills the second robin, and shoots Barbera in the spine, which paralyzes her.
But having watch the 1989 version of Batman about 100 times.. I can say that Jack version of the Joker is really just him turing into the Joker when people piss him off too many times..
Hedger version brought a whole new level to the Joker.. But I wouldn't say that Hedger version was the best.. But as of right now I think he nails the part pretty well. But for cartoons Hamill is the man.
He just turned him into Hannibal Lecter's understudy, and called himself the Joker. Albeit, he was a bit smarter and by design sicker, but come on?
I'm getting tired of this "whole new level" crap. It was just ONE cinematic storyline, Joker isn't this "ultrasadistic character" who needs to be brought down the path of violence because he's already BEEN THERE. He just did some good acting, that doesn't make Heath-Joker refreshing.
"Have you ever danced with the Devil in the pale moonlight...?
Versus
"Why so serious...?"
Which one sounds like it had more meaning - wit - Jokerness to it? AND BY JOKERNESS, I don't mean "The Killing Joke" or "The Man Who Laughs" the two most commonly/generically overused examples of Joker's few "pointlessly albeit comically ultra violent" moments.
Heath wasnt in control of the script, I ment pure performance wise.. Imagen if Heath said that line.. "Have you ever danced with the Devil in the pale moonlight...?" Heath would of performed that with for more depth
A lot of you probably haven't heard the British-produced audio drama "Batman: Knightfall," (yes, based on the story arc of the same name). An American actor (indeed, most of the cast were Americans) named Kerry Shale played the Joker, and gave him a truly terrifying laugh.

And just a bit of extra trivia: in this same audio production, Alfred was played by none other than Michael Gough from the Burton/Schumacher movies.
"Batman Forever" was in my mind the best of the lot; we got away from the repressive black and white of the first two, and Val Kilmer was a more capable and less scatterbrained Bruce Wayne than Michael Keaton.
The rest of the cast was first rate, even if Two-Face had suddenly turned white; I reckon he'd just come back from Barbados in "Batman," then by the time of the third movie he'd shaved his 'tache and lost his tan.
Nicholson may not have done a brilliant laugh, but it was at least a proper villainous laugh. Ledger, for all the wonderful things he did with the part, didn't even try.
To Cesar Romero as well; when they showed him the costume sketches for what he'd be wearing, he started laughing-- just his own natural laugh-- and the producer of the show said, "That's it! That's the Joker's laugh!"
The one thing people seem to be forgetting is the effect the chemicals had on the jokers mind. While some origins due indeed have him being slightly unhinged to begin with, others say that the chemical baths not only scared his face, they twisted his mind.
Here's one thing that has ALWAYS bugged me about this...
He drops into a vat of chemicals.... then suddenly decides to don a clown persona? I mean... I get his face is just fucked... but he suddenly has to become totally just...well... batshit crazy?
In most portrayals of the Joker, he was already borderline nuts and had a disturbing obsession with dark humor. The clown persona was just a natural progression after having himself transfigured as such.
We can't discount what GhengisVon said. No doubt the chemicals added to his already warped personality. But, even in many of the portrayals of him as a gangster before becoming "Joker," he was someone with a twisted sense of humor. Like his psychotic laughter. In many stories, the Joker was the one who killed Bruce's parents and the worst thing that Bruce continues to recall over and over is the haunting laughter while they died.
...I'm not saying the comics are wrong or anything... But frankly it doesn't MATTER what it was in the comics.....that's not what I'm talking about here.
I mean this MOVIE has no progression in the Joker character. He has a Joker card... has his accident, then comes out like a circus-themed hellhound! Frankly, I don't CARE what was in the comics. I'm saying this movie doesn't do it in a smart manner. And thus, its failing AS A MOVIE
Ahhhh, yeah good point. Though doesn't it sort of imply the whole crazed artist thing in that movie, too? It's been a while since I've seen it, so I can't be sure, but I think it still has a sort of theme with him being obsessed with performance art and comedy.
you're trying to compare two different thrill rides, Jack's a more classic joker. A whipping, wrenching and unsettling giggle packed blast through a fun house gone mad.
Nolan's universe is more grounded in reality. And in that vein, Ledger was more like the fastest and meanest roller coaster you can think of and it's pitch black
Jack Nicholeson is still a great Joker. I think comparison is another sign of people kissing up to Heath's death. Heath Ledger was great as the Joker. But I feel his part was so big for all the wrong reasons. Nobody compared Michael Keaton to Christain Bale. Better yet, everyone seemed to forget Aaron Eckhart as Two Face. He did great, but people seemed to forgot about that. Jack IS STILL A GREAT JOKER!!!! Screw anyone who disagrees!
zomfg. "i dont know, i like heath ledgers joker, but it was a different joker, joker, joker, joker" zomfg stfu EVERYONE. its. a. fucking. movie. stfu, im sooooooo tired of hearing this shit. is everyone really this obsessive about a movie?
heath legers performance as joker was weak, srry for some people who disagree, but in that whole movie joker did not do one thing that joker might do, he might play an awesome terrorist, but hes last on the joker list.
lasersbun maybe that because nolan wanted a realistic joker and off comics. there are some part in the killing joker that heath joker mite do. in the comic the joker shots gordon daughter to make her paralyzed. than stripe her down and take photos of her. also they have the same purpose. to make people insane. the killing joke joker was some what the same as heath. jack joker was a based 70s joker. some what the same clothes(heath and killing joke comic).
Jack was the Joker of his time, of this motion picture. You cant compare BATMAN with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Tim Burton creates wonderful fantasies.
Christopher Nolans films are made as if they were real and could happen today.
In my personal opinion, Jack did a wonderful job and it is a true classic performance.
Heath and Nolan, however, brought the character back to it's roots. He kills on a whim (Jack's joker did that too), and wants to turn Batman over to 'the dark side'.
no, no, no. you all are wrong. heath did an overly amazing job with the character and truely put his emotions into the character and took it seriously.
the best joker by far( i woukd say) is the animated Joker voiced by Mark Hamill. thats my favorite no matter what. heath as the real-live joker, however, is freakin awesome,. Jack did an alright job. he didnt suck at all. he was just beaten by heath and the animated Joker above em all.
jacks laugh is just kinda crazy itself lol..in ANGER MANAGEMENT his laugh was crazy.lol..i do like the way heath made himself the joker,,and i dont like the guy playin the commisioner in the new batmans

Shaanyboi 2 years ago
Ahhhh, yeah good point. Though doesn't it sort of imply the whole crazed artist thing in that movie, too? It's been a while since I've seen it, so I can't be sure, but I think it still has a sort of theme with him being obsessed with performance art and comedy.
AMVpurgatory 2 years ago
lol the most they allude to an obsession with art is that he has a painting in his apartment... he doesn't even acknowledge it, it's just there.

you're trying to compare two different thrill rides, Jack's a more classic joker. A whipping, wrenching and unsettling giggle packed blast through a fun house gone mad.
Nolan's universe is more grounded in reality. And in that vein, Ledger was more like the fastest and meanest roller coaster you can think of and it's pitch black
phantom12321 2 years ago
Jack Nicholeson is still a great Joker. I think comparison is another sign of people kissing up to Heath's death. Heath Ledger was great as the Joker. But I feel his part was so big for all the wrong reasons. Nobody compared Michael Keaton to Christain Bale. Better yet, everyone seemed to forget Aaron Eckhart as Two Face. He did great, but people seemed to forgot about that. Jack IS STILL A GREAT JOKER!!!! Screw anyone who disagrees!

akhillius103 2 years ago
personally i like both performances
they're both playing the joker
but at the same time they're 2
different jokers
one is more more of a comedian
and the other is more of a psychopathic killer

heath legers performance as joker was weak, srry for some people who disagree, but in that whole movie joker did not do one thing that joker might do, he might play an awesome terrorist, but hes last on the joker list.
lasersbun 2 years ago
lasersbun maybe that because nolan wanted a realistic joker and off comics. there are some part in the killing joker that heath joker mite do. in the comic the joker shots gordon daughter to make her paralyzed. than stripe her down and take photos of her. also they have the same purpose. to make people insane. the killing joke joker was some what the same as heath. jack joker was a based 70s joker. some what the same clothes(heath and killing joke comic).

HEATH LEDGER > JACK NICHOLSON
MARK HAMILL > JACK NICHOLSON
HEATH (acting) + MARK (voice/laugh) = TWICE as greater than JACK

What about Cesar Romero?

HMM... good point.... without him, there wouldn't be anyone interested in portraying him...
and he was good, but the campy cheesy "ZAP!BIFF!BANG!" shit kinda screwed things up... but still good show or the time (I only remember it by reruns)

He kills on a whim (Jack's joker did that too), and wants to turn Batman over to 'the dark side'.
hcvang 3 years ago 4
no, no, no. you all are wrong. heath did an overly amazing job with the character and truely put his emotions into the character and took it seriously.

I like Jack more cuzz it's true'er to how the joker was protray in the comics.

who did the jack joker fry?
Alterego912 3 years ago
Who knows?
Probably because he was too expensive to bring back in a sequel, hehehehe.
I dunno, but who says he died? He could've been saved, we never know. Not unless Burton decides to go back to Batman, which I dont think will happen.
hcvang 3 years ago
the best joker by far( i woukd say) is the animated Joker voiced by Mark Hamill. thats my favorite no matter what. heath as the real-live joker, however, is freakin awesome,.

KnockoutMyke 3 years ago
Jack and Heath played different versions of the Joker so they really can't be compared and i like both of 'em the same.
But i prefer Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon by faaar. He did an amazing job imo.
