as an Avionics Tech (H53`s and then H-1s) I`ve always been curious about Harrier Pilots. One seater, keeping an eye on instruments, weapons, controls. Must be second nature to you.
The vertical landing is made to look easy. I bet its anything but easy, especially with the crowded flight deck and partly obscured points of reference.
@hallgb I'd rather deploy to the dirt than go on another MEU, I'm sure it was just one of those MEU's but it's one of the main reasons I'm out of the Corps. Also the shop members were involved in that decision to part ways with the Corps. Although the times were mostly bad, I had a lot of fun and would do it again with better company.
I was part of the ground trials team for the Harrier VSTOL programme in the late 70's and developed the "Ski jump" at Farnborough for our Aircraft Carriers and rapid lay runways. I think that the Harriers right up to our GR9 were the best CAS you can have in any theatre of Ops. So good in fact that our stupid Gov.UK got rid of our great invention and the carriers and the Field force and left us with nothing. The USMC have got it right, unlike our elected Buffoons that got rid of our Harrier.
You claim that the British invented something which I'm assuming you mean V/STOL hovering aircrafts. The harrier isn't really an invention, it's rather an evolutionary fighter refinement than an invention. If this isn't what you're talking about then please clarify what specific technology you're talking about that was invented by the British?
@SporkFire Please explain....what was the Harrier an evolutionary refinement of.? Also, when you refer to aircraft , are you also including rotary wing ?
@engaurd He's checking his desent and movement onto the carrier, looking through the HUD at a Hover point he has picked off the nose, Then to the right, at another hover point he has picked, therefore he is able to judge the movement of the aircraft relative to the deck, and not thump the areoplane into the deck or anything else in the way.
@USMCAV8R hey are you guys responsible for defending the amphibious warships and if you still fly when are the marines supposed to get the F35 great video
@trainfreak7745 On board the LHD class ships yes and no, we have Cobra's that also protect the ship. In order for the AV8B to take off the flight deck has to be clear of all other A/C (Air Craft), it's much easier to prep and launch 2 AH-1's rather than prep and launch 2 Harrier's, but yes they do protect the LHD's as well as the Cobra's.
@trainfreak7745 Yes it can, it has a 20mm turret on the nose not to mention can be armed up with 2 AIM9 sidewinders. Those missiles don't miss so yes a Cobra can compete.
@SSCamaroMan345 Well i knew it could be armed with sidewinders and it had a 20mm turret but an aircraft coming in extremely high speeds could easily take down a helo couldnt it great video by the way
@trainfreak7745 U would be surprised at what a helo can do, it only lacks high speeds. When u can fly in one direction, turn on a dime and head back the other way before the enemy has a chance to realize what u did means the difference. It really all depends on the Pilots of the Cobra and the pilot of the jet, thats y we have the Harriers onboard incase we need fast mover support. They also have their own missions helo's cant support.
@trainfreak7745 I'm no longer in, while I was in April there was talk about the new Zulu Cobra hitting by 2012 but the F-35 is far out still. Most likely between 2013-2015, that's what I was told before I got out this year.
@trainfreak7745 Yep, with the UH-1N Huey being upgraded to the UH-1Y Venom it's brother must also be upgraded from the AH-1W Super Cobra to the AH-1Z Viper. Their program is known as H-1, the new aircraft will be 86% compatible with each other. That means if one breaks they can strip the other for parts no problem to support missions. Pretty bad ass, too bad I didn't get a chance to see em in action.
@trainfreak7745 I've flown a civilian helo before but no I don't have a license. I am a former Corporal USMC, am a former Aviation Ordnance Technician on all helo platforms the USMC uses. I was not an Officer so I didn't fly em just loaded em with explosives.
it was a vertical landing, short take off cus its more fuel efficient gaining momentum on a short runway than it is lifting the whole weight vertically, also the loaded weight is a bit heavy for the amount of thrust produced. the RN lands harriers the same way, pulling alongside the carrier to get stable and positioned then side stepping onto the deck whilst descending. its tricky cus its a moving carrier buts its still vertical landing. watch landing vids filmed from the deck.
@brybish Not really, TBH the Navy and Marine Corps are get like... the handy downs compared to the Army and Air Force. The Harrier is cool nevertheless.
