Many poor people in Southern Mindanao are highly susceptible to join a rebel group in exchange for a little bit of money for their families. If we could end poverty by attacking the factors that lead to it (i.e. corruption), then we have a better chance of ending the conflict in Mindanao and making some positive changes in our country.

By "rebel groups" I meant exactly just that -- rebels. Examples, are the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, a group of radical Filipino Muslims who want to severe Mindanao from the Philippines and become an Islamic nation, and the New People's Army (NPA), which is a communist group headed by Jose Maria Sison.
For me, these rebel groups are no different from terrorists because they do terrorize innocent people. They kill, rape, torture and do other horrible things just to get their message across.
In fact, there was a news 2 or 3 years ago about an MILF commander and his men attacked a small Christian village and killed every one - including children. He then blamed the attack to the Phil. government for not approving the "Muslim Ancestral Domain" document.
In that post I wrote 5 months ago, I should have also mentioned "terrorists" because there are, in fact, terrrorist groups here in the Phils. like the Abu Sayyaf and the Indonesian terrorist unit, "Jameyah Islamiyah." Both are linked to Al Qaida, and are reported to have been working with the MILF and other Muslim rebels in Mindanao.
There are also reports of Malaysian and Arab terrorists coming to Mindanao to train local terrorists/rebels on warfare and making bombs.
Years before the 9-11 terror attack in the U.S. there was a fire in a small apartment close to the U.S. Embassy in Manila. That apartment was the hideout of Ramzi Yousef, an Arab who bombed the World Trade center in 1993. Yousef escaped when Phil. authorities came in to investigate, but his right-hand man, Abdul Hakim Murad, was captured.
During tactical interrogation, Murad told police of an attempt to assasinate the Pope when he'd visit the Phils. and an attack on various U.S. sites using airplanes. These information were given to the FBI back in 1995.
Also, during their stay in the Phils, Yousef travelled to Basilan, Mindanao to train the Abu Sayyaf. He also tested a bomb that he made by placing it under the seat at the Greenbelt movie theater in Manila. At 10:30pm, the bomb exploded, injuring several people.
He then went on to test airport security by assembling a bomb inside the toilet room of Phil. Airline bound for Japan. Yousef deplaned in Cebu City and that bomb exploded as it continued to Tokyo; however, it didn't crash the plane.
Another terror attack that occured here was the "Rizal Day" bombings on Dec. 30, 2000. It was a simultaneous bomb attack at five different locations in Manila that claimed many innocent lives.

The US - Phil. counter terrorism excersise is a positive thing for our soldiers. I also believe that the presence of US military in Mindanao can help in the fight against these terrorists and a very good "intimidation" factor. You don't know jack about national debt.We've increased our national debt because that money is spent modernizing and building infrastructure. Building new airports, trains, roads, sea ports, irrigations, class rooms etc.These infrastructures are necessary for an economy to grow, it's what you call "investments". The result of these investments is a higher GDP and ability to pay off that borrowed money or what you call"balanced budget". GMA's tough decisions has put our economy back on track.

I strongly agree. Because of this, most Filipinos lost their morality and discipline towards others and to themselves. I travel back and forth from the Philippines to the States for business. And yes dinners, that's how business deals are done. What you pay for in these dinners pays you back 1000 times what you spent. You obviously don't know anything about that. Nit picking on one or two dinners is plain dumb. Fin-Q survey determined that majority of Filipinos have low financial IQ's, when I see idiots like you complaining about dinners, I have to assume they're 100% right.

The late president Cory Aquino deserved all the hearts, the sacrifices and the respect of the filipio people. When she died, she reunited all filipinos in tears, compassion and unity...also sadness that one of the country's significant presidents passed away. Gloria admitted herself on national television she talked to an election official in the last presidential election. That should have disqualified her even as candidate. Yet she used political machinery to block all efforts to investigate this case. Instead of clearing her name, she uses every means to cover things up while extending her hold on power. She is "president" only because she holds the technical means of putting that term before her name--not in the true sense of people's democracy.

i don't think it has anything to do with that. the US doesn't think of Philippines as a country, just a military base in Asia to watch Japan (post WWII), China & N. Korea. i truly don't believe that Americans care about Philippines at all. if they really wanted to see the country stand on its own, why would they support corrupt politicians? perhaps it's to use them as puppets masquerading as Filipino leaders but in reality are being run by Uncle Sam. You don't know jack about national debt.We've increased our national debt because that money is spent modernizing and building infrastructure. Building new airports, trains, roads, sea ports, irrigations, class rooms etc.These infrastructures are necessary for an economy to grow, it's what you call "investments". The result of these investments is a higher GDP and ability to pay off that borrowed money or what you call"balanced budget". GMA's tough decisions has put our economy back on track.

Just for your info I live in the Philippines. I said I "lived" in the US, the "d" makes it past tense. Well there's been 12 million jobs created since 2004 and 1.4 deployed OFW's since 2001. 96,000 classrooms created and 4,019 computer labs. Minimum wage has increased 35% for private sector workers since 2001. Because we have a "balanced budget" the national debt is now decreasing not increasing.Global crisis sucks but Philippines is doing better than most countries. Stop drinking hateorade.

I strongly agree. Because of this, most Filipinos lost their morality and discipline towards others and to themselves. They've become pessimistic and cynical (not sure if both words are also the same). I just hate how most Filipinos feel like everything's bad from their surroundings. Filipinos have proven to be VERY supportive of their Presidents--but only duly elected ones. After Marcos, Cory, Ramos and even Estrada in his early Presidency, were well supported by the people. Gloria had the same support when she took over from Estrada. The problem is she betrayed this trust and kept on avoiding accountability. If only she cleared her name instead of using her strong political machinery to avoid investigations, the Filipinos would still have supported her.
