  • what is so artistic about a well drawn composition? What impression does a technically well made drawing, painting, or sculpture place on the audience? Why would I spend time painting the still life when I photograph it? Wouldn't the idea be to make the impression you seek for your audience?

  • This might as well be The School of the Art Institute in Chicago, but this work is good by comparison!

  • I find a lot of fine art to be a joke. The fact that enough garbage is sincerely indulged taints all of it. Hipsters are the worst when it comes to art.

  • GO OTIS!

  • The beauty of this movie is that art school is full of bad art and that makes bad art the standard. That's the irony. The institution wouldn't exist without the students. Their loans/money drives the machine. So what develops is the standard to which all art is measured no matter how good or bad it is. It's all about being in the club and getting to know who's at the top. You also have to be good at talking about your work if you want to influence those that would oppose you.

  • @JonBurnsArt Which art schools are you talking about? In my experience RISD is nothing like this; both technical skill and concept are of equal importance. You have to find a balance; you *should* be able to talk about your work. Just as you should be a strong academic student in order to be able to verbalize the reason you're passionate about what you do -- otherwise what are you but an illustrator for hire? Every occupation benefits from connections! Basic fact!

  • @RubiconXing I'm SO sure RISD doesn't produce ANY bad students. har har. Seriously, if you haven't seen anybody produce bad art in art school and/ or B.S. their way through a crit, then I wonder about your credibility. And your banner, "Let me be evil!!!" kind of sums your maturity up in a nut shell.

  • Ugh...that dude talking about the process of his work...such B.S. I'm an art student and people actually spew this B.S. in real life. It's ridiculous. I don't hide behind delusions. If something sucks, it sucks.

  • @TheSawyerpot1 You're in art school to learn. Some people's "bullshit" can be quite genuine. Who are you to judge? They may be at a different stage, trying to learn something beyond technical skill. I'm a huge supporter of strong foundations (Illustration major) but that's not all there is. The people experimenting aren't keeping themselves stagnant -- eventually something may materialize. This film stereotypes, but most students accepted into top art schools aren't full of BS.

  • @RubiconXing Woh, no need to get huffy. Calm down. I wasn't saying everyone is full of shit. This movie obviously exaggerates what one would experience in real art school. But when someone puts minimal effort into an assignment and uses a bunch of "deep" B.S. terminology about the "process" and this and that to try to cover it up...yeh, that's B.S. Sorry.

  • and....this is why I stopped thinking about art school lol

  • @coralin378 That's sad, if this film put you off the idea. Perhaps you wouldn't have been strong enough to get through it anyway.

  • @RubiconXing

lol wow I didn't mean it literally. It's not like I watched this film and suddenly thought "Oh art school is going to suck" It's sitting through years of this kind of bullshit in my other art classes with their so called "critiques" of others' works (similar to ones shown here) that I finally got fed up with it. Art is something I enjoy and discuss with others. Strong enough to make it? Give me a break.

  • I love Eno. XD

  • this is probably my favourite clip. DAMN it's hard being an artist today.

  • @nomorestoriestoday

    no its not

Just shit, piss, and vomit on your canvas and your be rich and famous in no time.

  • @Oddonan hehe, have you tried it?

  • @nomorestoriestoday

no but this girl tried it and she is famous

    watch?v=1dZ5BtZkIR4

  • @Oddonan Well I guess it can only be done once, or it will lose its appeal :p It has to be commercial to work, and after a while things becomes uninteristing because it's no longer new to people at that point. Anyways, I know body fluids are in at the moment, but I might be too late for that to work for me. So I'll have to do some other brilliant thing. x) wish me luck

  • what's worse is asshole teacher who picks favorite and decides which bullshit art she likes based on how much she likes the "artist". This type of art sould be fucking banned.

  • @Lottechoco "She", huh? Wouldn't be a personal experience, would it? ;-) I absolutely agree- and that was a big part of the message of this movie. It's not the art, it's the artist.

  • @UncleDeluxe yup, but this form of post modern art condones the self-delusion of the artist, or corrupted artists who lied and bullshit their way into people thinking they are have any skills or meaning. This type of art is so subjective, It really CAN NOT BE taught. Can you teach people what kind of food you like to eat? No, It's personal choice. Should there be "modern food" then---where the fish can be badly over cooked so we can protect the stupid "personal expression"?

  • I have been going to art school for almost a year now. While there have been some cringe-worthy moments, I have never experienced anything as bad as this. If you go to a art school that is really like this, I'd suggest finding a better art school.

  • @sergeantshroom I agree with you. Top art schools aren't like this. If you do hear BS, it's probably because the kid was busy working hard for another class and just didn't care to pull a full all-nighter. Or they're having a breakdown. Or they feel lost. It can be a number of things. People's art evolves differently, and develops in its own time.

  • art has no defining meaning as does life. so you have to really use your imagination to comprehend it. I hate defining or explaining my own art, it simply EXISTS!!!

  • LOL... This is why I never participate in critiques.. :|

  • This makes my head hurt

  • Yup, this is all art school stuff. It's why I'm heading back for an engineering degree.

  • OUCH!!!! It's all true, man. This movie, as previously stated by Crashtest517, is a painfully accurate portrayal of art school across the board. I actually DID carry all my supplies around in an old guitar case.

  • why is it so hard for us to say say the truth about some "art" out there? that they are BULLSHIT!

  • Comment removed

  • @KRKirsch What art school did you go to?

  • This looks like a film I would appreciate if it wasn`t so outrageously one-sided =/

  • @HorisontalRain It kinda has to be outrageously one sided because thats what the art world is like. If you look at the way representational artists are treated. It makes sense. If you like to make things look beautiful, and try to represent something without have a grand manifesto, or ism behind your work, then you will most likely not achieve success in the fine art world. Regardless of your skill. Just go to the MoMA and look at whats in there.

  • I experience this on a daily basis. Especially in my sculpture class. It makes me want to die. Such bull shit!

  • This makes me glad I chose science as my major as opposed to actually trying to go to art school.

  • One person here doesn't like art.

  • When you're the one in the back shaking your head at the bullshit exploding like lava from people's mouths, it seriously makes you reconsider why you went to art school in the first place.

  • This is also fairly applicable to Architecture School

  • Poor art genius in the class!

  • This doesn't apply to just art. Music, too. I was just watching some shitty Linkin Park ripoff band and it was nothing but 20,000 comments saying how incredible and amazing the song was and even how it made them "cry." And all I could utter was the Jerome line from this scene: "Are you fucking kidding me? Did you...listen to the...thing...?

  • @Epidemechanical that is called opinion, child

  • I got to MCAD. I've SO had critiques like this!

  • This just pierced me right through the heart. It hurts so much. I pray that BS-ing isn't what my future art classes are going to be. Either way I will do my best.

    I shall be positive.

  • @Ookamikage13 Go to a technical art school for computer graphics, concept design, 3D graphics, animation. Those are the types of art that is not bullshit. You don't need a college degree, you just need a good portfolio. I suggest gnomon school of visual art.

  • I have been an art student AND an art teacher. This is freaking hilarious.

  • he went to the wrong art school. This is the modern art school which is pretty bs. But there are traditional art school that teaches good representational art.

  • This movie is so hilarious! I hate art faggity shit.

  • "Are you KIDDING me?!" lol what a jerk

  • I just had a critique just like this. My whole school is like this (SAIC) and it's driving me nuts. I was thinking of transferring, but my classes this year are better, so I'll reconsider...

  • Haha I went to SAIC for a year then wised the fuck up! 30 grand is alot of money, wouldn't it be more fun to eat it and shit it out?

  • hahahahahha that comment made my day.

  • I'm going to SAIC right now, too. Some of the critiques are helpful. Some are full of fail.

  • it's a lot better now that I can choose a lot of the classes I want. Artsy fartsy-ness isn't my type of thing.

  • @IvoryBell Is it just me, or is everybody in this school a hipster?

  • @Nessarose1985, LOL, I'd say you are pretty much right

  • @ameIPPAI Heh heh. Ah, SAIC! The pinnacle of hipster-dom! At least, outside of that aspect, I've had great advisors and professors who have helped me tremendously on my novel. Interdisciplinary Critique Week is pure evil, though; I call it an exercise in sadism and cruelty.

  • @Nessarose1985, yeah man, I don't go to SAIC, but I've applied to Emily Carr in Vancouver. Every art teacher I've had in my entire life, besides my elementary art teacher obviously, was such a pompous self-obsessed ass, it really made my days in art seem tragic and depressing.

I can see how their in depth critiques are helpful, but their smug attitudes... it seems they're only judging and grading pieces based on their own tastes and not by the quality of work presented or hard work.

  • @ameIPPAI

    This is so true.

  • @IvoryBell I go to SAIC, too, but I'm an MFAW. Some of it's bullsh*t, but some is good. I just roll my eyes at everything I think is bull, then think how I'm going to turn it into a satire once I graduate.

  • man, this is EXACTLY how i feel in my art history class right now. like, SERIOUSLY? maybe they just felt like drawing some pretty fuckin flowers on the wall like i did when i was 4! it doesnt have to be so deep! baaaah. such bullshit.

  • BAH! HUMBUG!

  • it's true. it's all true.

  • "Not what you know but who you blow"

  • lol

  • Thats how i feel wan about my art some times lol.

  • lol the stare he gave him at the end

  • This was totally my experience in Art School. All you can do is laugh inside and enjoy the ride. Anything can be "art" as long as you know how to "talk" smarty about it. Like Andy Warhol said " Art is what you can get away with".

  • This so accurate it's painful- this form of post modern art nonsense sooner or later will be rejected even by the insecure elitists who hide behind it like a regal shield. The irony is that people think the inability to skillfully draw is a form of freedom, when in all reality it's the biggest limitation on expression any artist can ever place upon themselves.

  • @Crashtest517 THIS^^^^^

  • @Crashtest517, HAH, well said!

  • @Crashtest517

One day, I hope I'll say this to my professor. In the face. One day, my kind sir, one day. This comment made my day.

  • @Crashtest517 stuckist

  • god, this couldn't be more realistic.

  • Jesus christ, this is like a bad tromeo film. And too close to real life.

  • "Is not quite finished but I thought the class might find it interesting to see the various stages of my process"

    Malkovich: "Indeed"

    LOL

  • hahaha, i love that line too. just looks like a piece of cardboard with some silly string shot on it. lmfao

  • The film was written by a guy who attended art school.. that's why its so accurate. I love this film..

  • i love this movie.

  • Woah, that wanker really knows how to crank out a sphincter sentence. Nice job, art wanker! Do you masturbate to acrylic?

  • Haha, this is so accurate of art school. I remember doing a piece with a naked woman's body and a skull's head for the hell of it and my class made up this bullshit about me symbolizing the repressed sexuality of women.

  • well art is subjective maybe they gave u more credit than u deserved.....

  • No shit, that's the point of my comment.

  • sorry u missed my too subtle backhanded complement

  • I'm sorry that they haven't invented a witty sarcasm tonal application for the internet. It'd help me compliment sarcastically and complement my internet browsing experience!

  • wow clever it seems through the sheer power of your ego u magically invented the device to compliment me sarcastically that complements perfectly your need to stroke your microscopic penis

  • "It has the singularity of outsider art. Though the conscious rejection of spacial dynamics could only come from an intimacy with the conventions of picture making." LOL!

  • @dumbestname that actor deserves a medal for making his character so punchable.

  • damn this movie is so accurate! all of those students suck just like in the art school i go to!

  • i love how he's so synical , it's hilarious

  • that curly haired gay kid as annoying as fuck in this movie.

  • toootally agree XD

  • man. i should film my painting critiques.

    hilarious.

  • Dude that's the life drawing room at my school! I can't believe John Malkovich was there. cool.

  • this is like watching my own class *bangs head*

We always have people bring in retarded work and it always gets praised.

  • as an art major...I find this extremely amusing :P

  • This is so painful but so hilarious to watch. XD I really feel for that guy.

  • I would have to punch everyone around me if they talked or acted like this.... showing his process, what the f**k?!

  • lol, well as an art major this happens a lot. People just bring in unfinished work. XD

  • I used these as an example in a PowerPoint presentation I had to give on using Art vocabulary during Critiques and their effectiveness. That, and I thought it was hilariously accurate to anyone in art college!

  • haha.

"are you kidding me?! did you look at.."

    *class stares*

    priceless

  • Ha ha ha ha~ I know. XD
