cyberpunk is more than matrix, gost in the shell or terminator. Almost all the apocalyptic technology that cyberpunk characterize as dangerous will converge over 2040, invisibility suits, smart robots, artificial organs, spy nanomachines, oil peak, global warming, metals disperssion, minimal biodiversity, starvation, time when the rate of profits from technology will generates more problems than solutions. Just think the new problems generated with invisibility!, new laws, new crimes.
@bizbite2 theyre not gonna make invisibility suits because law almost always comes first so unless something can detect invisible suits, theyre not gonna go public with that.

@AZURA888 ive thought about that too, but not in the destructive sense. with many kids my age being obsessed with fb, mtv, their ipods, texting, and other shit, thats gonna have repercussions in the future. technology in america has made many americans take the easy way out more often. and has also made become more lazier and spoiled.
@pyroteque Most of them are from the Matrix and the AniMatrix. Ghost in the Shell, Terminator (the sucky third one) and the movie that only shares the title of the book it is supposedly based off of I, Robot.
@cyborgangster Real Cyber-Punk is is NOT supported by Hollywood conjuring up imagery with CGI, or even animators doing stuff. It starts in the imagination then goes live. Much like real Punk in which the individuals in that culture really are Punk's 24/7, living in poverty, begging, in the streets, homeless. Cyberpunks gathered the remnants of technology and wore them, found new uses for them, broke into mainfraims, etc. etc. WITHOUT the help of big budget Hollywood+animators. They did exist.
High tech societies, hackers, data pirates, government work in secret, patriot act, illigal wiretapping, war. terrorism, economic troubles which all contribute to the cyberpunk genere which is high tech low life.
Cyberpunk is a sci-fi genere and not soume group of people/anarchists.
A lot of people depend on virtual worlds such as second life because they earn money from it and have companies there.
For crying out loud we even have cyber sport competitions like CPL or CAL in which people who play games such as Quake earn 100 000$ and have sponsors.
@PhreakStep Data pirates? HIgh tech societies? All that sounds canned and a little too Hollywood. Patriot Act has nothing to do with Cyberpunk.
At its core Cyberpunk is about taking existing taken for granted technologies and re-purposing them. The spirit of Cyberpunk is taking over, subvertly, without it being known. Right now, in the media, Cyberpunk is happening. I won't point it out but if you knew about CP and its true nature, you can see at work. Right now, in recent events.
All I know is that cyberpunk is a sci-fi genere that shows high-tech societies or should I say computers, virtual worlds, internet etc... and low life standard which is war, dictatorship, economic collapse, plauges etc...
Patriot act is a legal wiretapping basicly it is used to pervent terror but by that they can listen even to your phone calls which makes kinda totaliterian.
@PhreakStep CP is about LOW-tech, discarded reused, repurposed technology, either to do subversive activities or for as simple as just tech-hobbies. Terrorism is an ideology. CP is a dystopic existence, only because of the decadence surrounding the individuals.
Hollywood did a lot specifically when Cyberpunk and "Virtual Reality" became mid-90's fads and they jumped on it ruining what CP was really about.
Although there is ONE movie that I think really represents CP - 82's Blade Runner. HNY!
No, actually it isn't. Leninism? Yes. Stalinism? Absolutely. Statist Communism? Of course... its what is often being fought against. Communism is proletarian. The idea of a vanguard party is right wing. Anarchism and communism are actually not far apart at all. Infact they are the same thing past the Dictatorship of the Proletarit. Real communism doesn't have a state. The people destroy the state as its only use is creating a caste system and protecting capitalist interests.
I never bought into the common cyberpunk theme of corps having more power than governments in RL but in cyberspace this is plausible. Since everyone will socialize/relax (and some even work) in cyberspace then the rules set down by the corporations who provide the hosting at the datacentres will matter more than government rules. If you infringe upon their rules they could ban you from their cyberspace instances and hence cut you off from socializing with your friends and possibly work.
Wouldn't cyberpunk anarchy, or even cyberpunk with sovereign/self-sufficient areas, be more plausible? Many times I get the feeling that cyberpunk is the average science-fiction dystopia with some raver music thrown in, lol.
Yeah I would say that cyberpunk is leftist (anarchist/communist) resistance to the distopia that capitalism, fascism, and corpratocracy, mingled and managed by new technology creates.
What do you mean? Anarchism and communism go hand in hand. I'm talking about real communism here; the Commune de Paris being the only real example. Anarchists and communists were originally factions of the same belief system. Infact most leftist ideologies were anarcho-communist. The rift came with the creation of statist communism (the Soviet union) that was in actuality authoritarian and no way at all what Marx proclaimed in the Communist Manifesto.
@PhreakStep no no no, here in europe the drug mob is in control...and i am serious. and just think of it..why do you think america goes fighting in the highest producers of heroin lol? heroin is the mind control drug. just give it a try sometime...its like having sex with god and you don't give a damn.
@FriedEggsInTheSky Well, now that I think about it, the Original Trilogy can be considered Cyberpunk, as the empire uses technology to oppress people, my bad.
Thinking about it, the only thing we don't share with cyberpunk today is some technology, which was an essentialy but not the most important part of cyberpunk literature.
Look at modern society. Then look at cyberpunk societies.
I think you could call it alienation.
Realism and virtual reality are flowing into each other more and more. Just think of social networks or the latest smart phone which lets you interact with said virtual world, anywhere, at anytime.
VIDEODROME, SCANNERS, DARK STAR, ERASERHEAD, DUNE, BRAZIL, BLADERUNNER, TETSUO: BODY HAMMER, DARK CITY, GUNHED, ETC ETC ETC. All of my favorite sci fi/ dystopian/ cyberpunk/industrial movies.
I recognized most of these clips, save for a few of the anime ones. I know ghost in the shell.....also some of the live action....will you be able to provide a list of the clip credits in the description?thisia great video and i want to comprehend it in its entirety
Let's be honest: Cyberpunk is becoming slowly reality. It's the best prediction of the future to date, with its anxiety-attack provoking hallucinating pulp-tech world....
It's "The Second Renaissance, part 1" from The Animatrix.
------------------------------
Es "El segundo Renacimiento, parte 1" de Animatrix, si hablas español miralo en español latino, no se si la traduccion es exacta pero es diferente de la traduccion en castellano.
@TheDM75: I totally agree with you. We were analyzing Assembly code back in 1994 when the first forms of Cyberpunks were starting to appear having in mind all the American and German hacking teams. @antegamhsouyutube I know the clips from the animatrix. Im asking about the live action clip playing from 1:00 to 1:09. Anyone know what movie its from?
Whether cyberpunk is not dead as a literary subgenre remains to be seen. That cyberpunk is now beginning to be seen outside of novels, in real life, is without question.
I think people tend to say it's dead because the fears that existed 10-20 years ago, with respect to technology, are no longer as founded. Hopefully this isn't completely true though, because I really miss the genre and wish it would make a comeback. The future's starting to look pretty freaky again. :P
@cyborgangster had "cyberpunk" tattooed on my arm for nearly 10 yrs along with a cobra on oposite arm in the plisske style from the original new york film poster
@Lynium Personally I think the idea of "jacking into the matrix" will become a reality in the next 50-100 years using some kind of neural interface; nothing as crude as that seen in the matrix film itself, possibly utilizing nanomachines and wireless technology. In the IT sector we are on a march towards "cloud computing" and combined with super fast fibre connections people will probably spend more time in cyberspace hosted by datacentres where there are no national boundaries.
well not really, but the philosophy of cyberpunk is kind of a nightmare like not too distant future, the borderline between flesh, mind and technology is clouded and foggy,so it's often flesh involved.
the thing that made me curious about it is that its actually kind of possible with that kind of technology-flesh combination,so its not so impossible and unbelieveble as normal sci-fi.
dear tailsdareaper if you are going to give it a name , define it whatever ,i feel it could be distilled to far more simplistic terms that you have layed out. cyberpunk only uses a sci fi futuristic backdrop, universe as it's the easiest way to get across the existential message of cyberpunk which is basically a skewing of what is real, descartes initial assumptions define it well by accident, cyberpunk does not have to be sci fi , as i've said it's just the most logical backdrop
You guys should watch a movie called "Brain Scan." Its not cyberpunk (not sure what you would call it) but it revolves around a computer system that manipulates the mind. Its a mid 90s movie.
The City Of Lost Children is also a "Steam Punk" movie. Worth watching. However, that's more to do with visuals than any theme. Cyberpunk focuses on man-machine interface whereas steam punk is mostly just fantasy.

@Lynium Personally I think the idea of "jacking into the matrix" will become a reality in the next 50-100 years using some kind of neural interface; nothing as crude as that seen in the matrix film itself, possibly utilizing nanomachines and wireless technology. In the IT sector we are on a march towards "cloud computing" and combined with super fast fibre connections people will probably spend more time in cyberspace hosted by datacentres where there are no national boundaries.

well not really, but the philosophy of cyberpunk is kind of a nightmare like not too distant future, the borderline between flesh, mind and technology is clouded and foggy,so it's often flesh involved.
the thing that made me curious about it is that its actually kind of possible with that kind of technology-flesh combination,so its not so impossible and unbelieveble as normal sci-fi.
tailsdareaper 2 years ago
dear tailsdareaper if you are going to give it a name , define it whatever ,i feel it could be distilled to far more simplistic terms that you have layed out. cyberpunk only uses a sci fi futuristic backdrop, universe as it's the easiest way to get across the existential message of cyberpunk which is basically a skewing of what is real, descartes initial assumptions define it well by accident, cyberpunk does not have to be sci fi , as i've said it's just the most logical backdrop

You guys should watch a movie called "Brain Scan." Its not cyberpunk (not sure what you would call it) but it revolves around a computer system that manipulates the mind. Its a mid 90s movie.
bennyvision627782 2 years ago
The City Of Lost Children is also a "Steam Punk" movie. Worth watching. However, that's more to do with visuals than any theme. Cyberpunk focuses on man-machine interface whereas steam punk is mostly just fantasy.

Mad Max is post-apocalyptic dieselpunk. Most aspects of the Fallout games are based on the Mad Max series.

blade runner NON è cyberpunk?! ma ci vogliamo documentare prima di sparare CAGATE?
magio677 2 years ago 2
