I am a European (ooooooops, I know), but I watch Top Gear US as well as the regular British Top Gear and Fifth Gear. It is different, but is IS interesting and I like the dudes' humor etc. This jump is insane and I am glad Tanner made it uninjured. Must have been a GREAT relief... Also, it is quite impressive how the impact point was so close to the fixed camera. That's precision right there... CONGRATULATIONS!
At 2:24 he was talking about keeping the truck at the right pitch in the air.. the inertia of the wheels is what controls the pitch. Lock the brakes the nose will drop, give it gas the nose will come up.. like in motocross or anything else with an engine that gets airborne.
@omg101man Newton's third law of motion. You've got the wheels spinning at the equivalent of traveling at 100 mph. So they carry alot of rotational inertia. So if you brake, you are essentially transfering some of that inertial to the car instead.
Imagine a bicycle wheel on an upside down bike. Spin that up, and then grip the wheel with your hand. The wheel will try to pull your hand along with it. The same thing happens here: the wheels pulls the brakes and therefor the car along.
@20spray I like Fifth Gear more than Top Gear in a way, because the people ACTUALLY have hands on racing experience. For the same reason, I like Tanner over Top Gear BBC... But, of course, British Top Gear is THE thing when it comes to fun. :-) And also, the current trio have been around for SO long that the motor world knows them through and through...
@The1barney1 Oh, I know its cheesey, and a lot of its set up, but its still fun to watch, plus I don't get the uk top gear, so why the hell not watch it?
the suspension soaking that jump is the most impressive part to me. any idiot/redneck can do that jump, but the level of control landing it and how that suspension soaks it is just astonishing... 2 thumbs up to Tanner Foust.
@nightspeed98 I'm with you on tht one bro....I figured once he hit the ramp that car would be all over the place...but that suspension in unreal...it just absorbed all the impact and the car straightened right up. KDub
@sxceyes : pumping the breaks while in the air, takes the rotational force from the wheels, and makes the truck tip forward. MotoX & Snowmobile jumpers use this all the time to control the bike/sleed in the air.
@1989bg2008 yea except if ski jumpers land wrong they break bones or just die...if this truck lands wrong, the engine (aka a giant gas filled box of dynomite), will explode and set tanner ablaze, alone with broken bones and probably a slow death...i would rather ski jump
@azntranc3951 of course there is.. centripetal and centrifugal forces always appear at the same time in rotations. so welcome to physics to you, too. with kind regards, your 3rd newtonian law.
2:20 is exactly like my 1:10 scale Short Course, or a motocross or something similar
hitting the brake lowers the nose, hitting the gas lifts the nose also he mentions Parachute effect, which is somethin that happens to rc's,especially these Short Course trucks.
@csumm1 err UK Top Gear took the UK Land Speed Record car for a run over 280mph and it almost killed one of them, I doubt you'll see much stuntwork from them again really, their luck is all used up...
@Arocany when he leaves the jumpthe wheels are spinning, dapping the brakes stops them, so the centrifugal force from the rotation of the wheels is translated to the rest of the car when the brakes grip them - thus rotating the car forward. same story in reverse for hitting the accelerator.
why do you need to go 100 feet up to reach 100 miles per hour if you just could go back a bit more to gain that speed? this car has an engine? Right??:)))
thats what they do with the bikes, but not with the cars...
@csumm1 erm.. hammond almost died in a dragster crash, remember? top gear US is a pretty good show, but it still has a long way to get anywhere close to the original. I doubt that any car show will beat that middle-eastern road trip anytime soon.. that was just incredible TV considering it is an entertainment program.
Can someone please explains how using the brake in mid- air causes the truck to pitch? I would have have guessed that the brake and the gas would do nothing in mid- air.
dear team hot wheels. thank you for the great vids and congrats on the world record (congrats tanner) keep up the new videos and i cant wait until the next world record
I really wish to see a top gear UK vs US, now the cheaters can send out "James" and I think this guy might still win.
HyperOpticalSaint 1 month ago
top gear USA is SHIT
The1barney1 1 month ago
I seriously suspect that giving it gas or hitting the brakes makes a bit of difference after it's once airborne, but I'm no "Rocket Surgeon".
After it's in the air, you just have to be along for the ride.

@omg101man because the wheels are spinning so fast slowing them down or stopping them will give the truck a counter clockwise rotation.
