KatTas4, you may be surprised to learn this is a traditional songin the United States as well. The lyrics for this version were written in the 1830's, and the tune was most likely chosen because "God Save the Queen" is easily recognized and sung by almost anyone.

This melody was written by a Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Lully and was the French national anthem until 1792!! The British Hanovarian monarchy, themselves German, adopted the melody after the battle of Culloden in 1746.
