  • Charlie Chaplin was a complex & rather amazing fellow human being I would have liked to have met him but being as I was born after his passing that was not possible. We can thank him for United Artists though which is still around & of course all his fantastic films.

  • ah, does it say "pass the censor"?

  • Can someone please tell me what the text in the end says? I can't read read the handwriting... -_-

"Just heard my picture won't (?????)"

  • This is still funny, even today

  • this is great!! wow. what is the note at the end was that part of the movie? was it from the director? i'm in love with Chaplin now :)

  • I saw this in 1989 at the Dominion Theatre in Tottenham Ct Rd in London - they were showing City Lights with a full orchestra as part of Chaplin's centenary. They also showed some shorts and this was one of them. I thought this was the best.

  • Thank you for posting this. Now that I am older, and an uncle, I took it upon myself to introduce my nephews and nieces to Chaplin, Keaton, Laurel and Hardy, and the like. They love Chaplin, they like Keaton, and they adore Laurel & Hardy, and Abbott & Costello. Chaplin made this movie 93 years ago, and it's still funny. What an accomplishment. To compare, look at similar comedy shorts made in 1914. Some are funny, but Chaplin actually grew as an actor and filmmaker as the year went on.

  • hi. this is not the complete film but it has a few things the other versions of this film seem to be missing. please let me know where you got this. wonderful stuff. Mac Estelle p.s. for the record, first the public saw of chaplin in the tramp outfit but first one filmed was in Mabel's strange predicament. took longer to edit and release.

  • fantastic... he was 200 years forward

  • Good video. I saw Chaplin's "The Gold Rush" pretty recently and have started to watch all of his films. Nice to see his first appearance.

  • Charlie, dressed as a tramp for the first time, goes to a baby-cart race in Venice, California. He causes a great deal of trouble and confusion, both on off the track (getting in the way of the cameraman) and on (interfering with the race). He succeeds in irritating both the participants and the public.

  • this is when mr chaplin introduced his character(the tramp)to the world

  • This is one of my absolute all-time favorite Chaplin shorts. It's such a simple concept-- a guy at a public event wants to get in front of the camera-- but it works beautifully. And of course it's not too much different than the kind of thing you see whenever a news reporter is standing in a public place, though maybe the folks today aren't as persistent (or funny). I sure wish there was a better print available, but at least we still have something! Thanks for posting this!!!

  • absolutly agree with you
