I'll agree that alot of shred, like this, isn't "musical". But I wouldn't bust on this for not being musical. The guy is just jamming with a blindfold on, not playing a song. Throw some great backing track behind this and some of it would probably sound quite "musical". Speed is meaningless if it's not music though. And it become fatiguing to listen to after a few moments. :)

Try your bridge pickup for the sweeping. It will take some of the harshness out of the tone. Circular picking is excellent man. I have always struggled with that.
