I watched this on Netflix last night and the stupid cartoon-style English dub absolutely ruins it. I hope to see the Japanese language version but it's not on streaming. :(

I really never get how people like you are sooo sensitive about dubbing. Do I understand how bad dubbing can be?Yea.

I don't get someone can imply dubbing can "ruin" something when there is so much more to the movie then that. Despite horrible dubbing I can still manage to enjoy movies like Goemon, Ichi...etc etc.

I never get how people like you are soooooo willing to watch a movie get ruined by the truly inferior performances of voice actors who can't act their way out of a wet paper bag. Audio is half of the experience. If you like it, fine. Just don't expect everyone else to.

Audio is half of the experience? That is factually incorrect. There is acting, costumes, special effects, story, choreography...and more. Saying audio is half the experience is not only a lie, it proves my point about how sensitive people like you are over dubbing.

I never said I liked the dubbing, I said I enjoyed the movie despite bad dubbing, or are you too stupid to understand the difference?

Very beautiful film. Tragic and bleak in comparison to the sometimes lighthearted character from the original films, one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much. Although Ichi is young, it is as if she's been wandering for hundreds of years with a empty heart.. even Zatoichi could laugh, smile or joke despite his fate but Ichi has never been able to. If you haven't seen this, you should - it will change your perception of various qualities of the world.

I just finished watching this on Blu Ray and it was amazing. In my top favorite of movies. Storyline, fighting, soundtrack, absolutely brilliant. Fyi real pretty actress :D

Ayase is a decent actress and is naturally attractive but the fight scenes are shot with angles and slow motion to hide that she's not very good with a sword.

But what really brings the movie down are its low budget look, bad costumes, bad hair and hammy acting.

Good Jidaigeki this is not.

Some company should bring over Ayase's other movie, Cyborg Girl.

Different genre of film of but much better.

Well its not A class film but its just one of those film you can treat yourself to and enjoy. Like a Godzilla film... corney stupid... but you still love it.

But that's not a good comparison. Godzilla is a guy in a rubber suit stomping on toy buildings-it's supposed to be corny.

Ichi is intended to be a historical drama but was made by a staff that were inept or didn't care. Their main concern seemed to be getting Ayase for the lead would guarantee to sell some tickets, and they were probably right.

Cyborg girl... Machine girl? -shivers- that's what i instantly thought of and that movie is horrible.

I am thinking of watching this anyways though.. i doubt it's as bad as your review insists.

Don't shiver. Ayase is not in Machine Girl.

But she is in Cyborg Girl. A film about a lonely student who suddenly finds an attractive Ayase complicating his life.

And much higher production values and overall better film than Machine Girl or Ichi.

Should be easy to find, you know the sites.

You'll want to check out the other Ichi films about the blind masseuse who hides a sword in his cane. This is one starring Hayase is just the latest of about 15 or 16 in the series. There are also the Azumi movies 1 and 2 which are not fantastic but still a lot of fun. Though when it comes to Japanese period dramas, no one beats the master, director Akira Kurosawa.

1985 is about as far back as i will go with movies i am more of a 89 90's kind of guy. but i do believe despite how old his movies are there good.

And yeah i just rented azumi that's why ichi seemed like a title i may like.
