  • I've heard cleaner vocals in black metal.

  • Amen to "UnhingedMelodies." This scene is practically perfect, down to Wood's appropriately sheepish, goofy look

  • "somethin wrong with STRIPPINNNASDFGHJKL!?@*!@!!!!!"

  • omg why are the yelling?? gesh

  • I would sing this song everywhere when I was eight. XD

  • This always makes me smile

  • The trumpet-playing stripper sounds like Howard's mother on "Big Bang Theory!"

  • I loved this part so much when I was younger, I sometimes chikaboom around when I'm happy. Cause I got gimmick!!! Hahaha

  • what I would give to know what "miss mazeppa" sounds like in real life... :p

  • Dear god, does anybody not understand a simple joke/irony they are supposed to sound bad because stripping is the lowest form of entertainment in the vaudeville era.

  • The black haired one is fricken weird!

  • the girls hot tho

  • they all sound like old women

  • @DaFawky They ARE old women :P Well, older women at least. That's the whole point they're trying to get across xP

  • @xXxXOogieXBoogieXxXx oh, i guess the quality is so bad i couldnt see the wrinkles lol

  • when i first saw this, i thought "what's supposed to be sexy about christmas lights?" then I saw another version, and realized that the censors probably demanded it

  • I actually dig miss mizepppas (?) voice.

  • @DarkBellatrix me too she's a hoot

  • Trumpet lady REALLY can't sing. And to be honest Bette Midler's version was a 100 times better than this one.I love Bette!! I still love Natalie Woods too though!!

  • My niece liked the version from the Royal Variety Performance where Cilla Black, Esther Rantzen and Lily Savage were the three strippers! She was always asking her mum to put it on again.

  • I can't believe that there are people moaning about the vocal performances on this. Do you not get it? These women are not meant to have the voices of angels! They're s'posed to sound brash and vulgar. It's a musical joke, and they play it perfectly.

  • @UnhingedMelodies i noticed your comment and thought you were right on not to mention they refer to themselves as strippers and not one of them took anything off and the costumes were hardly skanty in fact the costumes were frankly funny more humorous then immodest, i think its perfectly charming

  • i love this movie but i only saw it once and i want to watch it again can anybody find me a link to it?

  • Is it just me or were the first two voices vile, especially the first one, it was like screaming in my face, it is an EPIC song though :)

  • Oh god that voice....Natalie is such an angel. So beautiful!

  • Ain't Nothin Like Big Mouth Brassy Broads

  • This is my favorite number from the musical; especially the line "if you wanna bump it, bump it with a trumpet!"

  • I could not be prouder to call Faith my aunt. :D

  • SOMETHING WRONG WITH STRIPINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

  • gorgeous darling

  • Good God, you can tell Natalie Wood has no clue what the hell to expect from Faith Dane. I LOVE it!

  • So good!!! x

  • because her voice isn't horrible.

  • LMAO :)))

  • Natalie Wood is so pretty.

  • This song is hysterical, and all three of there "tacky strippers" are so well cast! I bet the entire time they were filming this, Natalie Wood was thinking "WTF?"

  • man, i am so happy i was first exposed to this song from friends of mine wh wereencouraged to sing well.

  • Bhuidhe:

    It's "I ain't EVEN tryin."

  • @FrankieAddams12 It's "and I'm not even tryin"

  • I'm electrifying and I ain't trying... sheer genius!

  • LOL! I love this song!

  • Does 1:59 remind anybody else of R Kelly's "I'm A Flirt"?

  • notice how they don't show their bellybuttons!

  • I love this classic but our girls in Ladies In Lights did an excellent job and they can carry a tune on top of the acting! hehehe a wonderful production, Gypsy

  • 13 people didnt get a gimmick

  • Miss mezepa is sooo cool, lol.

  • @BrutalJim The woman who plays her is my great aunt :D.

  • @allwheeldrive123

    REALLY?!

  • @jayfeatherrox101 Yup :) Look her up, Faith Dane.

  • I'm electrifying and I'm not even trying. Best line ever.

  • SOOOOO wonderful! this just made my night! :)

  • Bump it with a trumpet!

  • FAITH FOR MAYOR OF D.C.!!!!

  • the one with Cilla Black, Barbara Windsor and Lily Savage in 2001 is the best version.

  • the UH UH looks painful

  • What is a gimmick ?

  • @alaindiazaran a unique strategy or theme to attract attention and/or increase appeal.

  • Miss Mazeppa's voice makes me want to kill someone.

  • One of the best musical numbers America has ever seen.

  • I sa 3 drag queens do this number in P-town last summer. they were wonderfull. I think it was written for drag queens really!

  • "You'll pardon me....But to have no talent is not enough!"

    Lol I love this movie!!!!!

  • exactly... You gotta have a gimmick

  • Natalie eclipses everyone even if the camera isn't on her...simple as that

  • @theachtungtree yes. to call her 'radiant' is a huge understatement! I miss her being around. I had the good fortune to be her friend in the last few years before her death, and she was as beautiful a person inside as she was on the outside.

  • @nicodagger wow...natalie's friend? omg dude...you're basically the coolest dude on earth...seriously...congratulations

  • @theachtungtree I know, I was very lucky.....it was just one of those things, I grew up with Paul Mazursky, who directed "Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice", and got to hang around the set, and became friends with Natalie. Of course, like everybody between the ages of 3-95 who met Natalie, I fell madly in love with her, but there was no way in hell that would happen. But she was the most amazing woman I've ever met. And believe it or not, very insecure about her looks!!!!!!

  • @nicodagger you are wayyyy lucky man and seriously to hang out with paul...it's super awesome, that movie and splendor in the grass are my fav natalie wood films....i'm in love with natalie since i was like 11, you can't imagine how much i love her in many ways, her interviews, her films....i have no girl,i wish i could just drop dead and meet her (if that's posible..hehe), she's an angel, tell me more man..please

  • a wana be gonnee!

  • love it, I saw this one at Stratford, Canada, Loved it.

  • this is my dance song luv it <3

  • Natalie, Natalieeee Natalie, Where's Natalie?

  • omgggg I used to imitate the "uh uh uh" part when I was little hahaha now I remember where I got that from

  • thank you! is the whole movie on youtube somewhere?

  • I love this musical so much!! All I want is wacht it again! =(

  • wow i loooove this!

  • ...somethin wrong with STRIPPINNNNNDEFHNEIOFOISNCXN!!!!

  • Mazeppa rocks

  • I Love It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Im in a show right now and Im Miss Mazeppa! :)

  • 0:22-33 She sounds like Fran Drescher!!!

  • The lady who played Miss Tura also played the minor role in the Susan Hayward movie "I'll Cry Tomorrow". She was the bar waitress who served Miss Hayward a drink in the bar and advised her to carry a flask for a little drink when she really needed it. I think you can probaby this scene somewhere on the net.

  • "If you wanna bump it, bump it with a trumpet...."

  • omg Mazeppa is SO loud...love it

  • @flootloops Me too she's a hoot perfect voice for this song

  • Man i wish they still made movies like this all the rest is like crap sorry to admit

  • @cats1000000000000000 HEY I AGREE

  • Faith Dane OWNS that scene and that number......what a great lady!!!!

  • "Somethin' wrong with STRIPPIN'!!?!???"

  • It's You Gotta Get A Gimmick, not You Gotta Have A Gimmick

a small but very important difference...

  • one of my favourite musical moments from the fim Gypsy - just think its really funny and cheeky.

  • lol funny what movie is this from?

  • the only one who can sing is betty bruce aka tessie tura

  • This is my one of my favourite scenes from any musical - Laurents, Styne and Sondheim all at the top of their game! Love Mazeppa.

  • I love this. This is the best part of the movie!!!!

  • Miss Muzeppa, aka Faith Dane, now just "Faith" has run for mayor in DC three times with her bugle -- with finesse, but without success.

When she auditioned for the stage part, she did her number with the trumpet in front of the director and Gypsy Rose Lee. The trumpet was not in the original script. Gypsy laughed so hard she had to take off her false eyelashes.

At the time, Faith was dating no other than "M.B." Marlon Brando. They remained friends until his death.

  • So they couldn't find anyone who can sing?

  • They're not supposed to be able to sing well.........their only talent is showing off their bodies.

  • this number is an absolute classic - it never fails to make me laugh till i have tears running down my face - I'm motivated by mazeppa and her backbend - she truly is a revolution in dance !!

  • Wow, Miss Gladiator has an annoying voice...

  • That's what makes her funny.

  • They sure had a lot of spunk didn't they? lol

  • i still love watching this film :-D

  • I hate pan and scan. Hate it worse when there's no scan.

  • "sumping wrong with strippin?!"

  • 'lets smoke a peace pipe!'

  • terrible film. No-one can sing least of the Ethel woman, the mother.

  • haha Mazzepa is an amazing actress!!! She makes me laugh everytime. I love this song!! <333 gypsy

  • aah, my poor ears! The first one really shouts!

  • @TheMusicalOfMe

but thats her character. and she does a darn good job at it. and besides, shes using he diaphram! :) haha

  • "Take a look how different we are..." when obviously, aside of the trimmings, there's no difference at all.

  • Ah!! They don't even sing just shout, Shout SHOUT! X|

  • Haha. I love this film! Oddly enough, I grew up on this...

  • The last girl can actually sing well.

I'm doing this show over the summer. If I end up in this song (which I most likely won't, because I'm 14) it will be SO much fun to perform.

  • work it ladies!!!!

    great song done to perfection

after all these years I finally noticed

she's got a christmas tree on her head!!!

  • well think about it...she's playing a stripper that's not supposed to have any "real" talent. They did it on purpose.

  • At first I was like uuhhhhhh... but OMG! THAT WAS HILARIOUS!!!!

  • best version. never fails to make me howl laughing.xxx

  • Gah! I wish someone would post the scene from the 1993 mvie with Bette Midler. They were my favorite strippers! lol

  • remember, they said they had no talent...

  • Wow these women are awful singers. My ears are bleeding

  • That was the point! They can't sing!

  • @BrooklynBabe Whats the point in having a great voice, if youre gonna sing Sondheim? ;-)

  • @BrooklynBabe I thought it was just me who said they can' t sing

  • @hidoll22 That's the point.

  • @BrooklynBabe Actually .... because this is a musical... they CAN sing. How "well" is the story. Actually all the ladies in this scene are true old-school "belters". ;-)

  • @BrooklynBabe Look I meant that lots of singers need a gimmick to get noticed...like The Gaga...when she began way back nobody really noticed her and she was good

  • I love this scene soo much ! Haven't seen the film in years though.

  • MissMidoria: It was an honest question, there's no need to be rude

  • Even if it was honest, the question bothered me. Sorry if I was rude - but I didn't appreciate the question.

  • I used to dance around to this as a small child, and my mom just laughed. I'm just realizing my mom was more permissive than I thought. LOL!

  • does that mean you're a stripper or somehing?

  • I hope my point didn't nick you when it flew over your head like that.

  • MissMidoria:

It's great to have a mother with a sense of humor.

  • bump it with a trumpet omg that is so frickin histarical hahahaha

  • LOL!!!!!! XDDDDDD

    So freakin funneh!~ xDDD

  • Likey! Wonderful, just wonderful!

  • wow ive never seen this version! i like

  • ms Mizzepah: "somtin wrong with strippin?!?!?!?! ROFLMAO

  • I lovee this play...we did it in our school this year, and it was such a fun thing to be apart of :D

  • a classic! One of the best films 1962'.

  • awesome song <3 i love this film!

  • i love the voice of the stripper in the gold, trumpet outfit, its like she ate gravel, love that type of voice for some weird reason

  • The strippers ur talking about is Ms. Mizzepah and yeah she does sound like she ate some gravel

  • @ARSENICinyourpudding Faith Dane? I agree -- great character actress!!!

  • @ARSENICinyourpudding Faith Dane. She's the reason there's the Faith Dane Clause.

  • @ARSENICinyourpudding I love her voice too

  • they are shouting too

  • the strippers sound like robots!!

  • kristen chenowedt would make a great mazeppa or even gypsy.

  • shes more of a dressy Tessie tora.

  • I don't care what people say: Mazeppa kicks ass!

  • ssshhh! natalie wood is in the shot.

  • I actually prefer Bette Midler's version to this one..on an acting level..Natalie and Rosalind are great..but the strippers are waaayyy over the top..and can't sing...Linda Hart as Mazeppa in Bette's version was priceless..as was Christine Ebersole..but both have their moments..

  • They're SUPPOSED to be over-the-top. In fact, the Faith Dane Clause comes from the fact that Faith Dane claimed she owned the role because of the way she played it on Broadway. Look up the Faith Dane Clause sometime.

  • The bad screamy voice might have been the point. Smoker-voice kind of fits the character. =P

  • Mazeppa sounded best with the horn in her crappy mouth!

  • Bump it with a trumpet!!

  • she annoys me! she like screaming instead of singing. it hurt to listen.

  • Agreed. I search 'gypsy', I get insane tone-deaf singing strippers. Internet, you have failed me.

  • Don't get it, do you? She's supposed to have no talent. It's deliberate.

  • This scene changed my life forever! Working in the performing arts is difficult to say the least. But this advice is the BEST that you will ever get to set yourself apart in an industry inundated with hacks, copycats and backstabbers.

back to the clip...the end rocks!! If you wanna grind it, wait til you've refined it!!

  • Miss Mazeppa kicks so much ass! Love her!

  • She was funny with her low voice

  • "SOMETHIN' WRONG WITH STRIPPIN" - would love to blow her horn. x

  • This is my absolute favorite scene! I remember when I saw it live...

  • One of the highlights of the film ! It's over the top which what makes it so much fun ! Natalie Wood after she becomes "Gypsy" .. so yummy !

  • The brilliance of these 3 performances can never be matched by anyone anywhere EVER!

  • The actress playing Miz Mezzapa, Faith Dane, run for Mayor of DC 7 times, and her symbol in the ballot was the trumpet :-)

  • The Gimmick was always my favorite part in the movie Gypsy the chick with the horn was good but BOY does she talk loud

  • don't you get it ? it's CAMP....loud, out of pitch SINGING....They're strippers you moron,...... like Beyonce :-)

  • @btinsley1 Even though I think Beyonce is a very talented performer, your comment was too funny to be offensive. LOL

  • @texmatt: you know, i made that coment 2 years ago & forgot about it...i found it & laffed like hell myself !!!!!! Thanks for the thumbs up !!!! bt

  • The one with the horn is funny

  • once I waz a sleppa now I'm miz mezzapa- is a a thing of great beauty - you big monkey. No one else can do this.

  • you have no clue what talent is! Of course she can sing well, she's just singing that way to be funny. A lot of actresses did that in old movies....but you wouldn't know that.
