  • It's a very nice jingle. I never heard it much on mainland UK TV tho.

  • The musical box tune here is called 'The mountains of Mourne' The last couple of bars are sung as, 'Where the mountains of Mourne sweeps down to the sea'

  • I've always had a soft spot for this ident, which is unfairly maligned by some fellow TV Pres enthusiasts. Lovely, absolutely charming.

  • Yes 31 Oct 1959 4.15pm and was broadcast to approx 97, 000 homes

  • I read somewhere that each dot represents a major town or city in Northern Ireland. So from the right hand side (or more westerly ) to the left you have Strabane, Derry, Enniskillen, Coleraine,Armagh, Ballymena and Belfast.

It makes sense but I am not 100% certain

  • Your right on that point

  • That's a very nice observation there, by the way! When you look at the map that makes a lot of sense.

  • Nice little ident and jingle!

  • This is nicknamed "The Early Oscilloscope", "The Early Zigzag" and "The Mountains of Mourne"

  • It's material from 1959, rebroadcast on an edition of UTV's 'UTV Rewind' programme in 2008.

  • and on the special utv ident in july 07

  • Some say this is creepy, but I think it's kinda cool - even if it does sound like it's coming from a wind-up music box!

  • Great to see this on its own (not that there's anything wrong with Victor Lewis-Smith's take on it).
