But the GH guitars truly attempts to resemble guitar-like skill in the simplest way possible. And many people are attracted to that more than the actual guitar.

Also, I noticed the biggest differential between a GH player and just a straight up musician is a lack of creativity. GH players are used to having something tell them what to play and when to play it, as opposed to create the music on their own. This is what ultimately determines whether or not someone's fit to play music.

i don't agree totally. There is an entire industry of musicians who are very skilled but are'nt good at writing music. Symphonies are filled with them for example. Not that everyone in an orchestra is that way but you will find that many musicians perform other people's music for a living and simply don't care to write their own.

I believe GH guitars do a horrible job resembing a real guitar. Namely, no strings or frets. The difference in feel is night and day.

I don't believe it's a trend, however. I think it may find a time when it dies down more, as it has begun to, but as long as people are fascinated by the instruments yet only want to have fun with it, these games will have a fond place in pop culture. And I think that demand is virtually limitless. Unless everyone on the planet learns how to play the instruments.

You are right that it will always be there to some degree but the fact that it is a fading trend is very telling. We live in a society with no attention span. GH feeds that just like every other superficial trend. People want to feel like a musician but they don't want to take the time to actually learn so they take the easy way out. Being a good musician takes a life time of learning. GH is like crack. Just a cheap, shallow high.

thats a lie. GH is for fun. I play both guitar and drums and I still bought guitar hero. Its fun because that's what it's meant to be. Obviously I think real instruments are funner but I do not think, for one second, that people buy Guitar Hero to feel like a musician

To start though, a lot of musicians, for whatever reason, get extremely territorial about their instruments and how "complex" they want it to be. So when someone manages to simplify it in some way, like GH does to the guitar, they become extremely defensive. You are one of those people.

Now, rest assured, GH is not somehow "ruining" potential guitarists. In fact, its generating them.

You see, Activision has claimed that guitar and amplifier sales to first time buyers was up 23% in 2007. A spokesman for Guitar Center agreed and credited games like Guitar Hero. All video games become trendy and popular, but according to statistics, Guitar Hero sales have peaked and are beginning to decline. Eventually those plastic game guitars will be history and only the real thing will survive. I just don't understand why if you want to play guitar you would waste time on a game.

Well, some people are pretty overwhelmed by the guitar initially. I tried to learn the guitar once before I had any musical training, totally hated it. The amount of frets, the strings, the callouses on my fingers. It blew. Only after I played drums for 3 years and had a strong sense of music and timing did I decide to revisit it.

And even with that background, it was still a tough instrument to conform to.

Guitar is a very tough instrument to learn to play and that is why it is so rewarding when you start getting good at it. I'm very happy that not just anyone can pick up a guitar and shred. Not everything comes easy. If it did, what would be the point.

When kids, or people in general really, play Guitar Hero, they share an intimate connection with the music that only musicians were allowed to have. Now that it's within their grasp, they can see for themselves, in an abbreviated sense, what its like to be a musician.

Because of that, I feel like these game inspire people to play the real instruments. Most people enjoy that unique interaction with music, and want to further it by learning the real instruments themselves.

They nicked the idea when Guitar Hero were devloping it but relesed it first because Guitar Hero spent more time developing it and making it better and didn't sue them for copyright because they're better than that. this chart always confused the hell out of me... bass is obviously on the left, as seen by the open notes, but at the end of the video, it looks like it's playing the guitar riff. I mean, unless those very clear, very high-pitched notes are coming out of a bass. So I just realized that the video is probably made from two different run-throughs of the song, one with bass on the right and one with bass on the left. because if not, I'd be kinda mad at this chart.

I'm glad someone else noticed! After playing the guitar and bass parts for the song, I have noticed that when playing the guitar part, you are playing the rhythm throughout the whole song. But when playing the bass part, some of the notes that you play are actually supposed to be guitar, including the high pitched notes. I am very frustrated by this!!! :(

To confirm this for yourselves; play bass by itself. You should be able to hear that some parts you play are actually guitar.
