The rest of the cast is so far amazing, but these Thénardiers are just dull! To get a good Thénardier you need a comedian or a character-actor. NOT A SINGER!!!
I think people find it sounds better with British accents because it was written for and originally performed by a British cast and so it's been associated with British accents ever since and therefore sounds better with British accents...
Even as an American, this sound better with British accents in my opinion... I don't know why. Not that these people aren't good, I just like it better with British accents.
I feel like a lot of the charm is lost without the British accents. And this song is also just kind of bad in this version. But little Eponine is cute.
@casinobowling Yes - Armstrong's talented performance definitely lends to an extremely authentic, believable character. Lucas' performance in my opinion was charming, entertaining and just plain old fun to watch. :o)
ive only seen the anniversy versions so u dont know eponine is there kid till later and now that i know she was kind of bitchy im glad cosette gets the guy she loves... lolz XD
@iloveyou1997jd hmph. Cosette was a jerk. Eponine was a little kid- and it even says this in the book- and she treated Cosette the way her mother treated Cosette because she thoguht that was what she was supposed to do. Cosette was spoiled as an adolescent and while people die at the barricade her biggest worry was whether some guy liked her. While Eponine risks her life for the man she loves and dies doing it.
Why oh why does McVey act like he expects to see Cosette in the wood? He doesn't react at all when she gives her name at 6:35. Aaarrgghh. It should be a shock.
I saw this on Broadway years ago and loved it. But I have to admit, Matt Lucas' version in the 25th anniversary production at the o2 absolutely won my heart!
Saw this cast and all are talented. Unfortunately, at this point, they weren't into it. Saw Nick's Thenardier in '97, '00, '02, and '03--he was in top form in '00. Had initially used well executed but misguided Cockney accent; and was only actor who used it so it clashed. He ditched it by '00; went from good to great. He was a LOT better than this in '00 and he's the only Thenardier to make me laugh so hard...at a burp! The timing and way he did it was just hilarious. XD
@jcvamp ... I agree! :) I just watched the Broadway version then the London version and .. the London version BLEW ME AWAY! .. This is nothing compared to it at all!!... London Version FTW :D

Who is Madame Thenardier here? She's no Jenny Galloway but she's not bad.

@blueberryicedtea They are not supposed to be in England. Why is charm lost w/o British dialects?

While I agree that it lacks some of the luster of the other performances, I like that the vocals are more understandable :)

Nick Wyman is a comedic genius. Watch him in other scenes or in Tale of Two Cities.

Thenardier isn't incredible, but I appreciate that he doesn't put on some random accent because he listened to the soundtracks.
