My favorite party to use for Necrosaro is Hero, Ragnar, Alena and Mara and just hack the hell out of him. I bring out Cristo only to revive someone that gets killed. and I use my 2 dews of the World Tree to heal my party.  I USE the Zenethian Sword after Saro casts BOUNCE and he's mince meat. The only threat I have with Saro is when he loses his arms and uses his BEAT and DEFEAT spells. Otherwise, he's no challenge. I've had more challenge with Malroth.

Back when I first played this, it was the RPG I had dreamed about. Friggin' huge, tons of characters, good storyline... then you finally get everyone together and for some stupid reason they take away your ability to directly control everyone but the main character. It just killed it for me and I never finished as a result.

I have to say, this fight really impressed me back in the day, when I played this game, the first of many playthroughs. The guy's at the height of monster evolution, and he still keeps evolving and changing even as you fight him? Awesome. And still he succumbs to your party's combined might. That's exactly the kind of spectacle you need in your RPGs to make them memorable.

Psaro used the same method of evolution as Estark, so they are similar at first. But Psaro used the Armlet of Transmutation, unlike Estark, so he's able to evolve further to the pinnacle of evolution.

Awesome ending fight. I just beat this game a few days ago because its amazing. Nice combination of players, but i preferred the hero, ragnar, christo, and alena. I would deal over 500+ damage each round and my characters were about lvl 40ish. I only healed 3 times total with my hero, using Healusall, but i would critical him all the time. Hes a rather easy boss to kill, and he shouldve been harder considering you hear his name throughout the entire game...

@GAMEELO: Well, the NPCs are actually an advantage, especially if you're party is going up against enemies that you don't know... they know which is the bigger threat. for an NES game, the NPCs are pretty smart. and once you figure out who they view as the biggest threat, you can let them take care of the threat while YOU kill the other monsters, ending the battle quicker.

Ah, for a time this was my worst final boss. I'd always get everyone killed and be revived with the hero and 8 dead characters. I had Mara trying BeDragon and Nara had the L35 100 HP finish. Maybe it was 120. I finally beat him.

Then my second playthrough I learned that the Zenithian Sword uses the freezing rays... then he only becomes difficult; still tougher than Zoma in DW3.

I always HATED when that happened. The worst of it for me was being in the Rhone Valley right before Hargon's Castle in Dragon Warrior 2, then having my entire party taken out by one of those stupid Batboon creatures using a sacrifice spell.

Kids nowadays shouldn't complain about how hard certain RPGs are unless they've played - and successfully beaten - some of the older, better games like Dragon Warrior.

When I was younger, this battle was intimidating as all hell. I mean, seriously, the way he just keeps getting stronger as you wail on his was awesome. That, and I thought it was a cool touch how his horns and claws kinda bleed into the text windows.

I know all about the "Puff Puff room". Most oldschool RPG's have these and whore houses if you look around. There's one in Phantasy Star 4 too, and I think DW3 but I can't remember exactly. There's also one in FF7. I think it's great.

I've tried fighting Necrosaro many times and each time I failed. I think Alena had stilleto earrings to attack twice thats the equivalent to the falcon sword. I've gotten to the point where the music changes and everything but for some reason when he did that the pzzz sound he makes made me do like 0-18 dmg a hit so I lost, also I didn't have the barons horn.

Getting rid of that was why the Zenithian sword had a "use" effect. IIRC.

@paladine99 Try USING the Zenethian Sword on Saro when the music changes and he evolves into his final form. You remember that he casts BOUNCE immediately. USING the Sword will cause a flash of light to emit from the sword and nullify BOUNCE. Then Mara can scorch him with BLAZEMOST. Try having Hero, Ragnar, Alena and Mara as your last fighting team. Go through Necrosaro's palace and up the volcano with Taloon, Cristo, Nara and Brey. Use Baron's horn and back to final battle team..

@iroquoisfalls You do know that with your wagon there, you can switch battle members DURING the battle. That's essential so that if one of your final battle party dies, just switch someone for Cristo so he can revive that dead party member and then throw him back in the wagon, returning with your hacking crew.

You can get a cheat for the roms that allow you to control your characters and all the options are there. 1 bad thing though, taloon doesn't use his special abilities like summoning merchants. Im not sure about npc characers like strom or hector though. 1 more thing, the cheat is for game genie I think.

I really liked DQ4 a lot but I still think it was a slight step backwards from 3...shorter, easier, no control over party members...storyline is definately the best of the NES DQs but not the best for NES in general. That honor will always like with MegaTen.

Hmm, i always found 4 to be a bit tougher than 3, maybe becaused i tended to play through it faster, resulting in lower level characters, IDK> Though the not being able to control your party was supposed to be "advanced". From what i remember, according tot he manual, the more you used certain preset tactics, the better they got at using them, and the better they performed when set to the free form tactic.

Actually, the games were called Dragon Quest in Japan. The reason why they were called Dragon Warrior in America is because Dragon Quest was copyrighted by a tabletop RPG company. Notice how Dragon Quest VIII isn't called Dragon Warrior VIII? That's because Square-Enix bought the rights to the name.

Equip Alena with the Stiletto earrings and watch her crit twice in a row and do over 600 damage. I've kicked Necrosaro's ass at level 30, but it's soo much cooler to get everyone to like the high 40s low 50s and just walk all over this guy like hes an ant.

For the whole 5th chapter magic based characters are unreliable. For the end of the chapter, I liked a group of: Hero, Ragnar, Alena and either the dragon NPC or Taloon (if you can get past his random moves). For the end game I just ended up Equiping Alena with that crystal you find in the world tree that heals everyone for a good amount, and Ragnar with a staff of healing (or whatever garbage, unlimited healing item i could find, I cant remember).

I would also keep that dragon in the group (Doran ??) cause he owned just about anything with his breath, even Metal babbles. It works out if you keep the party on tactical "Defence" cause alena would always be the first person to act, (using her crystal to heal) and ragnar's slow ass would heal staff of garbage on anyone near death. I always liked Brey to Mara, cause it seemed like he was more likely to use his Ice attacks spells, or Sap. Who is using the Metal babble sword?

I use the same party the guy is using in this video for bosses. Cristo is about worthless in boss fights, he just futily keeps trying to use Beat/Defeat and it never works. Nara's Barrier spell is very handy in boss fights as well as her Infer spells. The thing is tho I ONLY use Nara for boss fights, otherwise I have Cristo or Ragnar in there. The Hero, Alena, & Mara are permanent fixtures.

Also would have been nice to have a guild like in DW3 where you could create characters and a shrine to change classes. Still this remains one of my favorite RPG's to this day. You can, you just need the Game Genie, the code is YYEXVTGE. Tust me I was mad when I got to the last chapter and was not able to control the characters. I actually stopped playing immediately, but once I found this game genie code I went back and finished the game, and loved it. You are right about Dragon Warrior III, that was the best of the original 4 for the NES.

I still have my copy of DW4. I recently tried to pickup where I left off and beat the game... I was met with disasterous results. These games were insanely difficult. I still have DW 1, 2, & 4. They were the crowing acheivement of gaming. I even still have FF 1 and the DW series is by far superior.
