that game was very boring all the lines eemed simplistic and easy to follow.I think I can see a positional advantage with the knight sacrifice but Im by no stretch of the imagination a grandmaster
In the past our teachers were always the grandmasters and worldchampions, nowadays our teachers are the computers. They play , solve and compose . So have a look at youtube.com :
By "beaten" I initially just thought: "- in chess", but that would´ve been very cool if the KGB came home to you and threatened you with a game of chess.
I think I see now what Kasparov wanted to do. He wanted black to take his night at b5 so then he could take back the pawn with his bishop and check the king, which may have very well worked out to white's advantage. However Gulko outsmarted him by ignoring it by simply killing whites bishop. Great move by Gulko.
At 10:16 the white rook should have just taken the bishop on D5. If black takes the white queen in the next move, white can than recapture black's queen.
This is a great example of how Kasparov's wild play could get him in trouble. I was just reading on how he had similar problem's with Petrosian and ended up asking Spassky for help, which lead to a hilarious quote.
This is actaully one of my favorite openings...Ive tried all sorts of things against 1.d4 and the QGA is what i finially settled on. Its hard to win if white doesnt play ambitiously, but white always plays ambitiously haha.
Kasparov really blewed it bad. He gave the game away! I'd like to see another video showing a different duel between those tow chess players where Gulko won but whithout Kasparov giving the game away.
Politics of the day ripped him away from the chess world. He was able to return after several years, and still posts very impressive results, but his prime was taken from him. Kasparov only beat him one time out of several occassions.
Kasparav basically lost that game for himself by making an overly ambitious attack. Gulko really didn't do anything special. I also can't imagine that Kasparov was hoping that Gulko would fall for the bishop tactic to win the queen. They are both way to strong of players to fall for that elementary tactic.
thank you thank you thank you. You explain chess so clearly the sign of a true genius. In 1972 all the Russsian grandmasters studied Bobby Fishers chess and the conclusion was that is was too simplistic as a matter of fact Fsher had never beaten Spassky prior to the match. Spassy told some reperters before the match that he was going on a vacation. Fisher beat the whole Russian chess Machine. It takes a true genius to simplify the complex. JR you are the greatest. Thanks for the videos.
I agree, frankoisi. 10. e5 is worth consideration. However, IMO, Black is better after 10...h6 Bh4 11. g5 Bg3 12. Nh4 Nxd4 13. Nxg3. True Black's king doesn't seem safe on the K-side, but white's king is coming under surprising pressure, too. Capturing with the f pawn opens the g1-a7 diagonal and capture with the h pawn opens the h-file.
But again - the video was very entertaining, interesting and helpfull and i especially liked the fact that you did not start this series with the typical people that spring to mind when thinking about chess - at least to people including myself who are not so familiar with the popular faces of chess except for maybe Kasparov and Fischer and such. Thanks for the videos.
Instead you should definately show some pictures of Gulko playing chess or as kid or how he looks now. Cause despite all the great informations people wont be able to recognize Gulko if they don't know what he looks like :). And visual information should also make it a bit easier to remember the pure facts you connect with them. (Continue in 3. post)
I discovered your videos a couple of days and almost watched all of them since then. They are all very helpfull and interesting - especially the progress from your first matches to your more recent ones.
However - i got some suggestions:
When you introduced Boris Gulko covering his personal life you allready showed the ending of the match vs. Kasparov which takes away the "result" and hence some of the suspense when you go into the game in the second part of your video. (Continue in 2. post)
didnt even know who this guy was tbh i just found out today that he actually beat kasparov one of the greatest chess players of all time very neat n learn something new
Rob, you are doing a wonderful job! I never knew there was such good instruction up on youtubes.
However, (and I am probably well over 2000elo if I had a rating), don't you think you speak in too long language when it comes to some very simple passing tactics such as moving out a bishop with check and then (slowly speaking) taking the queen?
I'm in no way suggesting snobishness, but isn't the main hard work to concentrate on enough other things, rather than things which one can suddenly see?
With my videos I like to discuss many things, from basic to advanced in as much as my personal understanding of the game goes. When I first started chess I always found it a bit frustrating that some of the basic ideas were never touched on by chess material, so I like to cover them also for people just getting going in the game we all have a passion for. Thanks for checking out the vid!
Absolutely! It's great that you are trying to do this (to speak basic ideas that are never touched on).
But a thing like not to be able to take the knight because of a discovered check followed by QxQ, is so dramatic, that it can't be missed, once you see the idea. Then it's also very simple, like to recapture a queen. Who wouldn't see that!?
But you are answering a very big challenge of how to get everything across. I still need more of that for myself.
Both Boris and his wife (who both played competitive chess) were banned from chess in Russia for several years due to their anti-communist beliefs. He was arrested and beaten by KGB agents during that time. Having that taken away really impacted his chess career, although if you look him up on some chess databases he still has a very impressive overall win percentage for games played.
I'm glad you decided to start a GM series, I've already improved tremendously just by wathing your games and now you provide commentary on GM games. All I can say is thank you. 5/5 I eagerly await the next video.

is King's Indian Defence unsound really? i'm a beginner, but e.g. Radjabov plays it (according to chessgames com, that's actually the opening he plays most often with black pieces).
hehehe I can't believe Kasparov seriously hoped his grandmaster opponent would fall for a trap like that :) (taking the Knight and losing the Queen). great game and commentary anyways! I'd be afraid to expose my King as Gulko did at 10:00 but "weaknesses are only weaknesses if they can be exploited", that was one of the instructive moments of the game for me
"weaknesses are only weaknesses if they can be exploited" - Excellent comment! Kasparov had nothing left after those bishops secured the diagonals and the pawn covered the other possible attacking square. Down material with an exhausted attack, it was definitely over.
ty for your passionate responce- I understand your point perfectly I just see this differently. I see this as Two great players facing off where Kasp is going for the kill rather then trying to gain Minor advantages to win. Very interesting Game and Video.
This victory was Boris' quickest against Kasparov of the 3 outright wins. Generally, from my experience anyway, the notion of "poor play" is usually an amplification of really solid play from the other opponent. Boris definitely outplayed him positionally here, along with his other wins versus Kasparov, to the point that it really makes Kasparov's weaker decisions in the position that much more glaring. Credit still needs to go fully to Boris, however.
I think this is a video that is more about explioting a Failed attack by Kasp, rather then great play of Gulko. I like the imagination I see in kasp's failed attack. the Knight Sac is compleatly refuted by Gulko.
